MANKATO, Minn. – Second seeded Augustana won its first NSIC Women's Soccer Tournament as they defeated fourth seeded Winona State 1-0 at the Pitch on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato. With the win the Vikings earn the NSIC's automatic qualification to the NCAA Central Region Tournament.
Samantha Tymkowicz scored for the 14th time this season as she hit the decisive goal at 52:26 by beating the goalie in the upper right corner. Prior to this season, Augustana had not won an NSIC Tournament match since joining the league in 2008. After the championship win, the Vikings are now 3-5 all-time in NSIC Tournament play.
Augustana (18-2-1) would record their 11th shutout of the season behind the play of Taylor Machacek, who was named NSIC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Machacek had four saves in the championship match and 18 in the tournament with only one goal allowed.
Augustana will be joined by Harding from the GAC and Central Missouri from the MIAA as automatic qualifiers from the NCAA Central Region. The complete NCAA championship bracket will be announced on Monday, November 9 via a webcast selection show on www.NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. (CT). The regional tournament will begin November 13 or 14 on regional campuses.
