MANKATO, Minn.- No. 2 seed Augustana (17-2-1) netted a goal in the 87th minute to put away No. 3 seed Minot State (15-4-1) and advance to their first-ever NSIC Soccer Tournament Championship.
The Vikings struck first in the 37th minute when
Mackenzie Main found the back of the net thanks in part to a free kick from
Caroline Renner. This was a postseason first for both Main and Renner, as Main picked up her first career postseason goal, while Renner earned her first assist of the season and first of the postseason.
Things got interesting when Minot State's Meagan Kawahara scored her second goal of the season in the 72nd minute, knotting the game at one.
Emily Jacobson scored the game winner in the 87th minute to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead taking a free kick from 35 yards out, and beating the goalie in the upper right corner. The goal was Jacobson's sixth of the season.
Taylor Machacek stood on her head Friday afternoon allowing just one goal on 18 shots. This was Machacek's 18th match, and sixth consecutive, where she has given up no more than one goal.
Minot State lived on the Augustana side of the field for much of the second half controlling the pace of play. The Vikings defense held tough on each Beavers rush limiting them to just four shots on goal in the second half.
Augustana will play the winner of the Minnesota State/ Winona State game for the NSIC Tournament Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Mankato Minn.
