MSUM SAAC President Laura Bentz welcomes everyone to the National STUDENT-athlete day event.

Moorhead, Minn. - It is with great pride that the MSUM Dragon Athletic Department celebrated the 21st Annual National Student-Athlete Day.   This special day honored student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities.

“Four years ago I decided it was time to to take this day and set it aside to recognize the reasons why we are here,” said Sylvia Barnier, Dragon Associate Athletic Director.  “To often we meet twice a year; once at the beginning to communicate rules and then again at the end to celebrate.  Rarely do we take time out during the year to applaud, support, and socialize as an athletic department.”

MSUM student-athletes and coaches also invited students that participated in Scorch’s Lunch Bunch and clients of Access to the Red River Valley to join in the celebration.  The evening started off with over 325 participants joining in an ice-breaker which was then followed up by dinner in the Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Dragon Athletics then recognized 28 student-athletes who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or higher (honorees are listed below).  Following the awards guests and student-athletes participated in a football course including a tackling dummy, a track and field hurdle course, golf putting and pitching contests, a soccer dribbling and goal shooting station, and a basketball shoot.  The night was organized by the student-athlete advisory committee, Sylvia Barnier and Lonnie Carlson.

This annual event  was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.  It is co-sponsored with the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.  During the last two decades this nationally celebrated day has seen over 2.5 million high school and college student-athletes honored for their outstanding achievements both on and off the field.
