BRADENTON, Fla. — NSIC men's outdoor track & field athletes took home eight All-American honors, including five first team honors at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championshps. Minnesota State's Michael Sandle had the best finish as he was national runner-up in the triple jump and was sixth in the high jump, helping the Mavericks to a 21st place finish.
Minnesota State University Moorhead junior Josh Young finished seventh in the 1,500 meters to earn All-American First Team honors on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. It is the second All-American honor of the year for Young, who was All-American indoors in the mile. Minnesota State's Michael Sandle picked up his second All-American honor of the week as he finished sixth in the high jump with a career best tying jump of 6-10.75.
Young finished seventh in the finals on Saturday with a time of 3:52.22. David Ribich of Western Oregon was the champion in 3:49.64 in a very competitive race. Young was also an All-American indoors in the mile and a member of the MSUM men's cross country team that competed at nationals last fall.
The NSIC added three more All-Americans on Friday at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Friday was highlighted by defending Division II outdoor triple jump national champion Michael Sandle finishing second with a leap of 53-3.75, which sets a new Minnesota State University record.
University of Sioux Falls sophomore Teddy Frid earned his second career All-American honor on Friday afternoon when he placed 12th in the men's decathlon. Frid's score of 6,703 points garnered second-team All-American honors. With Frid slid one spot to 11th after the javelin throw, in which he recorded a 42.33-meter (138-10) throw worth 476 points. In the grueling 1,500-meter run as the final of 10 events in a two-day stretch, Frid ran 4:40.38 to maintain his top-12 place scoring 678 points in the final event.
The University of Mary’s Andrew Dubiel, a fifth-year senior from Colorado Springs, Colorado, earned second team All-American honors with his 11th place finish in the discus. The Northern Sun discus champion, Dubiel was ranked 18th entering the competition but quickly made his mark. He opened the day by connecting tossing the discus 169-0 (51.52 meters), his third-best mark of the season and his career. It also exceeded his winning mark at the conference championships by over 1.5 meters. Scratching on his next two attempts, Dubiel had to wait out the results of the second flight to determine his final standings. By placing 11th overall, he earns NCAA Division II second-team All-American honors.
Closing out their historic careers, University of Sioux Falls Track & Field seniors Scott Greenman and Jacob Zebedee each earned All-American honors in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. UMary's Luxon Glor earned his first All-American honor as he finsished 11th to earn second team All-American honors at his first NCAA championship event.
In a loaded field that featured all 20 vaulters clearing 5.01 meters to qualify for the NCAA Championships, it took a clearance of 5.06 meters (16 feet-7.25 inches) to place in the top 10 and just one total miss to be in the top eight. Greenman and Zebedee both passed at the opening height, then each cleared their first bar of 4.96 meters (16-3.25). On their first attempt at 5.06 meters, Greenman and Zebedee wasted no time ensuring themselves of an All-American finish with clearances on their first attempt.
Both vaulters had good looks at 5.16 meters (16-11.00), but couldn't get over cleanly. A native of Clovis, Calif., Greenman collected his sixth career All-American honor by placing sixth – he beat out Zebedee for sixth place after Zebedee needed two attempts at 4.96 meters to Greenman's one – in the deep national field. He qualified for eight NCAA Championship meets the maximum for a student-athlete who competes in indoor and outdoor track & field. Greenman brought USF its fourth individual NCAA title when he won the indoor crown.
Zebedee's seventh place finish and ensuing All-American recognition against such a deep group of vaulters speaks volumes about the progress of the Winnebago, Minn. native. Zebedee qualified for four NCAA Championship meets and earned three All-American honors in the process. He qualified for four consecutive NCAA Championship meets to close his career and earned All-American honors at both national meets his senior season.
After scratching in his first two attempts, Glor, a sophomore from Winnipeg, Manitoba, leaped 23-9.5 to place 11th overall in the standings. Glor hadn't jumped since California in the middle of April due to injury.
