Sullivan started out with a ninth-place finish in the 60m dash, scoring 752 points. He followed that up with the second longest long jump (23-1.25) to earn another 823 points.  Sullivan dominated in the shot put with a throw of 42-9.75 to add another 670 points while his leap of 6-8 in the high jump scored him 831 points, giving him the lead after day one of competition.

In the final three events on Monday, Sullivan placed third in the 60m hurdles (8.54) and cleared 12-5.5 in the pole vault.  Sullivan then kept pace with Teddy Frid of Sioux Falls in the 1000m, finishing just hundredths of a second behind him, to seal the victory and finish 59 points ahead of second place Frid.

In all, the top nine finishers in the heptathlon all scored over the NCAA provisional mark of 4650 in the competition.
