MOORHEAD, Minn. – The University of Mary won its second straight NSIC Women's Cross Country Championship as the Marauders scored 30 teams points after placing five runners in the top ten. Leading the way for the Marauders was Alexis Zeis, who also won the 2015 NSIC Championship. She covered the flat 6,000-meter course in a time of 20:49.5 as the Marauders had runners place, first, second, eighth, ninth in tenth to dominate the field.
Finishing second was UMary’s Jaiden Schuette with a time of 21:01.2. Emi Trost of Minnesota Duluth, the 2016 NSIC Champion, was third with a time of 21:07.9 while the 2014 NSIC Champion, Sasha Hovind of Northern State, was fourth with a time of 21:15.1.
Joining Zeis and Schuette as All-NSIC First Team members from UMary were Kaycie Stewart (8
th, 21:38.5), Kate Fox (9
th, 21:42.9) and Bree Erickson (10
th, 21:46.9).
Augustana sophomore Emily Tromp, a transfer from Ball State, was named NSIC Newcomer of the Year after her 11th place finish in a time of 21:49.7. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year is awarded to the highest placing student-athlete competing in their first year of cross country competition in the NSIC.
The Marauders’ Head Dennis Newell was voted by his peers as the NSIC Coach of Year for the second straight season.
The top ten finishers are named All-NSIC First Team while finishers 11-20 earn All-NSIC Second Team honors.

Northern State’s Sasha Hovind was awarded the NSIC Elite 18 Award during the championship presentation. Hovind, who won the same award last year for indoor track & field, had the highest cumulative GPA of all the student-athletes competed at the women’s championship. Hovind is a senior majoring in elementary education and holds a 4.00 grade point average. The Stirum, North Dakota native was the 2014 NSIC Cross Country Champion, finished third in 2015 and was fourth at this year's championship. Hovind also earned the 2017 Willis R. Kelly Scholar-Athlete Award for Academic Excellence from the NSIC last year.
Next action for NSIC Cross Country will be at the NCAA Regional, which will take place in Kearney, Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 4th. The NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, November 18 at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Indiana.
