MSU's Hunter & Sandle Earn National Championships in Final Day at NCAA DII Outdoor Championships

Bradenton, Fla. -  The NSIC had a strong finish on the third and final day of the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday in Bradenton, Florida. Minnesota State came away with a pair of national individual titles while multiple more All-Americans honors were earned.

Myles Hunter, who was making his third straight appearance at the NCAA outdoor track & field championships, claimed first place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.76. In doing so, he becomes a two-time national champion, having won the 60m hurdles title at this year's NCAA DII indoor meet. He is Minnesota State's first NCAA champion in the 110m hurdles.

Michael Sandle, who was making first appearance at the NCAA outdoor track & field championships, claimed first place in the triple jump with a school-record leap of 53-2.75.  Sandle joins Peter Pratt (1975) as Mavericks who have won a national outdoor triple jump championship.

The Minnesota State men's 4x100m relay team consisting of Geno Bullard, Richard Wilhite, Myles Hunter and Paul Selman finished sixth with a time of 40.40 to place sixth.  Junior Altoniece Williams finished third in 100m hurdles with time of 13.66 to earn All-America honors in her first appearance at the national outdoor meet. Freshman Khadiya Holligsworth, who was making her first appearance at the national outdoor championships, earned All-America honors by tying for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 5-7.

Augustana's Kayla Mescher and Bree Woelber closed-out the 2016 NCAA Division II Track and Field Championship for Augustana on Saturday both earning First Team All-America honors. Mescher broke her own school record and finished fourth (59.86) in the country in the 400-meter hurdles and Woelber placed fifth in the high jump (144-2), also earning First Team All-America honors.  Woelber competed in two events on the final day of the NCAA Championship meet after participating in the heptathlon on the first two days.
 
The University of Mary's Molly McDonald  placed 11th in the high jump after  clearing 5-05.75 to tie for the ninth best mark of the day. However tiebreaking procedures placed her 11th overall at the championships.  

MSU Moorhead junior Brady Speicher finished 11th in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:01.97 to earn second-team All-American honors.

After earning All-American status from the NCAA Championships on Thursday in the 10,000m run, Northern State's Sasha Hovind took on the 5,000m run on Saturday evening.  The junior finished ninth just two seconds behind the eighth place finisher. She finished in a time of 16:52.31.  UMD's
Breanna Colbenson finished 13th out of 21 runners in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:58.75.

The University of Sioux Falls had four vaulters earned All-American honors, placing in the top 12. Jagger Gran took fourth and Scott Greenman was sixth to collect first-team honors while Chase Jensen placed ninth and Jacob Zebedee tied for 10th to finish with second-team honors. 

St. Cloud State freshman Elijah Pitchford placed 19th overall in the triple jump in his first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. Pitchford's jump of 46-5.25 came on his third and final jump of the day.
