MANKATO, Minn. – Two new records were set on day one of the 2016 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Myers Field House in Mankato, Minn.   Both records were broken by the student-athlete that already owned them as Kaitlyn Long of Winona State and Myles Hunter of Minnesota State both improved on their records from one year ago. In all, there were 50 provisional qualifying marks recorded on day one of the championships.

Long crushed her own weight throw record with a heave of 22.01m (72-2.5). The throw was the second longest throw in NCAA Division II history and the second longest throw in all three divisions this season. The throw only trailed Long’s own throw of 22.25 (73-0) from earlier this season. The throw was also an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

As he did last year, Hunter set a record in the prelims of the 60m hurdles as he shaved two hundredths of a second off his prelim time from last year with a run of 7.76.  That mark also is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships.

Both Long and Hunter also broke the Myers Field House records with their performances.

After six scored events Augustana's women sit at 42.5 points and hold a 5.5 point lead over Winona State in the team standings. Olivia Montez Brown has scored 20 points for the Vikings after winning the pentathlon two weeks ago and taking the top spot on the podium in the long jump (18-10).

On the men’s side, the four-time defending champions of Minnesota State sit atop the team leaderboard with 67.2 points.  The Mavericks hold a 26.2 point lead over Sioux Falls (41) after seven events.

The NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with field events followed by track finals beginning at 1 p.m.
