NSIC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Olson placed third in the mile run at the Jack Johnson Classic held at the University of Minnesota with an NCAA provisional time of 4:56.09, which ranks as the fastest time in the NSIC and the sixth fastest time in the nation this season.

Wayne State
Wells won the shot put at the Wildcat Open with a new personal best mark of 52’ 4 3/4”. Her mark is the second best throw in NCAA Division II this year and is an NCAA Automatic qualifying mark. It is also a new Wayne State record breaking her previous best mark of 51’ 9 1/4” set in December or 2014.This marks the second time this season Wells has been named NSIC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
Women’s Track: Irene Almarcha (So., Sevilla, Spain) finished as the top Viking in the women’s 60-meter hurdles taking ninth-place with a time of 8.85.
Women’s Field: Bree Woelber (Jr., Pipestone, Minn.) took 11th place in the women’s long jump, reaching 5.22 meters (17’1.50”). She followed that up by taking seventh place in the women’s high jump clearing 1.68 meters (5’6”) on Saturday.
The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn.
Bemidji State
Women’s Track: Emily Turner (Jr., Windom, Minn.) established career highs in both the 1,000-meter run and the mile run Saturday at the Cobber Duals in Moorhead, Minn. Turner clocked a 3:17.01 to finish third in the 1,000-meters and posted a time of 5:30.63 in the mile run to finished fourth and help lead the Beavers to a fifth place finish in the team standings.
Women’s Field: Hailey Horob (Jr., WIlliston, N.D.) pole vaulted into third place at the Cobber Duals Saturday. She cleared a height of 10’4” for her third top-five finish of the season.
The Bemidji State University track and field team posted several top finishes and career highs as they finished tied for fifth place at the Cobber Duals at Concordia College Saturday. Junior Emily Turner led the Beavers in the meet, establishing career highs in both the 1,000-meter run and the mile run.
The Beavers will travel to Duluth, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge. Events are set to get begin at noon, Feb. 7 at St. Scholastica’s Burns Wellness Commons.
Concordia-St. Paul
CU placed second at the UW-River Falls Flacon Winter Classic.
Women’s Track: Gloria Williams (Sprints, 5’5, So, Minneapolis, Minn, Roosevelt HS) placed first in the 55m dash in a time of 7.42 and was first in the 200m dash with a time of 26.61 at the UW-River Falls Flacon Winter Classic.
Women’s Field: Gretchen Feilen (Jumps, 5’8, Fr, Savage, Minn, Prior Lake HS) placed first in in the high jump with a leap of 5’1/4”. She also placed fifth in the pole vault
University of Mary
Women’s Track: Tonie Pandohie won both the 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meter dash at the Concordia Moorhead Cobber Duals. The Kingston, Jamaica, native cleared the 60 meter barriers in 9.25 seconds and ran the 200 in 26.04 seconds.
Senior All-American Brienna Lynch also was part of two victories. The Bismarck, N.D., native won the 600 meter run in a clocking of 1:35.53. She then teamed with Josie Guptill, Sommer Haugrud and Crystal Hovland to win the 4x400 in 4:00.1.
Women’s Field: Jasmyn Garcia (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) had U-Mary’s lone NCAA provisional qualifying mark at the Concordia Moorhead Cobber Duals when she captured the long jump with a distance of 18’ 3.25”. She also claimed the triple jump after sailing 37’ 10”.
The Marauders next compete at the Thundering Herd Classic in Fargo, N.D., on February 6-7.
Minnesota Duluth
The Bulldogs competed at the University of Minnesota’s Jack Johnson Classic last weekend.
Women’s Track: Hannah Olson placed third in the mile run at the Jack Johnson Classic with a provisional time of 4:45.09, which ranks as the sixth fastest time in the nation this season.
McKenzie Holt (St. Cloud, Minn.) placed fourth behind three NCAA Division I competitors in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:55.09.
Women’s Field: Senior captain Amelia Maher finished fifth in the women’s high jump with a leap of 5’6”.
UMD will remain in Duluth next Saturday to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge at the College of St. Scholastica.
Minnesota State
The Mavericks competed at the University of Minnesota’s Jack Johnson Classic last weekend.
Women’s Track: MSU was led by the 4x400 relay team comprised of Jenni Vanttinen, Taylor Glover, Taylor Naatz and Brieanna Puckett as they walked away in sixth-place and also met the provisional qualifying standard, which ranks them 11th in Division II. Puckett would go along and finish the 200-meters with a time of 25.92. Senior Anna Veroeven finished in fifth during the triple jump with a final mark of 37’4.25”. Sophomore Nicole Larson increased her season-best in the pole vault to 12’2”, which ranks her eighth in Division II.
Women’s Field: Nicole Larson (Milwaukee, Wis.) performed a season-best in the pole vault as she reached a height of 12’2”. This currently ranks her tied for eighth-place in Division II.
The Mavericks return to action next weekend as they are set to host the Ted Nelson Classic, in Myers Field House.
MSU Moorhead
Women’s Track: Tia Knight (Sprints/Hurdles, Sr., Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon) finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles at the Jack Johnson Classic with a time of 8.81, just .01 away from a season-best. All five competitors who finished ahead of her were from Division I schools. Her time
is third-best in NSIC this season.
Women’s Field: Chelsea Klemetson (High Jump, Sr., Sabin, Minn./Moorhead HS) finished sixth in the high jump at the Jack Johnson Classic with a season-best height of 5’6”. Four of the finishers ahead of her were from Division I teams. The mark is tied for second-best in the NSIC this season.
Minot State
Minot State had two winners, a runner up finish and two third place performances Saturday at the Concordia College Cobber Duals Saturday.
Women’s Track: Sienna Dailey (Mid-Distance, 5-9, Sr., Glasgow, Mont. / Glasgow) finished the weekend with a pair of wins, one individual title and one relay title, and followed that up with a runner up finish at the Concordia College Cobber Open Saturday. Dailey won the open 400-meters with a time of 59.29 seconds. She teamed up with DelRay Audet, Mary Roy and Dijah Silva to win the 4x200 relay, running the second fastest time in school history with a time of 1:46.54. Dailey finished off a brilliant day with a second in the 200.
Erica Clark (Mid-Distance, 5-8, Gardena, Calif. / Gardena / West Los Angeles College) finished third overall in the women’s 600-meters with a time of 1:40.66. She ran the school’s fourth fastest time in the event.
The 4X200 relay team of Dijah Silva (Sprints, 5-4, Jr. Fallon, Nev. / Churchhill County), DelRay Audet (Hurdles, 5-9, Jr., Minot, N.D. / Minot), Mary Roy (Jumps, 5-4, So., Mount Vernon, Ore. / Grant Union) and Dailey won the event in a time of 1:46.54 as they ran the second fastest time in school history.
The 4x800 relay team of Catie LeDesma (Distance, 5-6, So., Chula Vista, Calif. / Otay Ranch), Emily Westlake (Distance, 5-9, Fr., Gainesville, Fla. / P.K. Yonge), Allison Windish (Distance, 5-5, Jr., Wimbledon, N.D. / Barnes County North), and Patience Albertson (Distance, 5-8, RFr., Norwich, N.D. / Surrey) finished third overall with a time of 10:31.72.
Minot State moves forward in its indoor season, traveling to North Dakota State for the NDSU Thundering Herd Classic Friday and Saturday in Fargo.

Northern State
Northern State won three events at the Concordia Moorhead Cobber Duals.
Women’s Track: Cross country All-American Sasha Hovind got back to her winning ways for the NSU women as she won the mile with a time of 5:19.21, winning the event by more than five seconds. The women’s distance medley relay team of Lindsay Gast, Josie Ostermann, Stacey McDonald and Hovind won the race with a time of 13:05.07.
Women’s Field: Breann Jackson was the Wolves’ other individual winner Saturday as she won the weight throw with a toss of 51’ 3”.
Northern returns to action next weekend as they travel to Fargo, N.D., for the Thundering Herd Classic hosted by North Dakota State.
Southwest Minnesota State
Women’s Track: Kim Shabino (Fr., Spencer, Iowa / Spencer HS) led the Mustangs at the Wayne State Invite on Saturday, winning the 200-meter with a time of 26.84, finishing second in the 60-meter with a time of 8.09 and recording a third place finish in the 400-meter (1:03.61).
Women’s Field: Naomi Dalton (Fr., Madrid, Iowa / Madrid HS) earned a seventh place finish in the shot put with a toss of 12.84m at the Wayne State Invite.
Sioux Falls
With many of University of Sioux Falls’ top performers in action over the weekend, the Cougars definitely left their mark at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, in Wayne, Neb. Three Cougars won a title in the field events, one hurdler logged the top qualifying time, and over 30 recorded top-eight finishes at the meet.
Women’s Track: Katlyn Sawtelle (Hurdles, Sr., Luverne, Minn./Luverne HS) logged the top qualifying time in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with an 8.92 second run. She placed third in the high jump at 1.50 meters (5’1”) and fourth in the long jump at 5.30 meters (17’4.75”)
Women’s Field: Kimberly Peterson (Pole Vault, Fr., Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth HS) won her fourth pole vault competition of the season and improved her NCAA Division II-leading mark as she cleared 3.95 meters (12’11.5”) to win the event, just five centimeters (two inches) short of the automatic qualifying standard. She entered the weekend with the top mark in Division II, Peterson keeps that spot after improving by seven centimeters.
The Cougars will split their squad next weekend, sending athletes to the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. and more to the USD Alumni Open in Vermillion, S.D.
St. Cloud State
Women’s Track: Sam Sunstrom (So. Sauk Rapids, Minn.) took 6th place in the 5000 meter run with a finishing time of 18:06.02 at the Jack Johnson Invite at the University of Minnesota.
Women’s Field: Becky Schmidt (Sr. White Bear Lake, Minn.) finished second of 20 in the long jump with a leap of 5.63 meters.
Natalie Gottschalk (Fr. Waukesha, Wis.) finished with 3072 combined points, which landed her in 9th place in the Pentathlon. Patience Yalartai (So. Bloomington, Minn.) was right behind her with 3007 points and a 10th place finish. In the shot put, Heather Clankie (Jr. Brodhead, Wis.) threw 11.77 meters, which landed her in eighth place.
The Huskies travel to Mankato, Minn. to take part in the Ted Nesleon Classic on Saturday.
Wayne State
Women’s Track: Mary Alderson (Sophomore, Fremont, Neb) set a personal best time of 27.33 seconds in the 200 meter dash, which was good for a 4th-place finish. She also set a personal best in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 8.26 seconds, which was good for a sixth place finish.
Women’s Field: Sara Wells (Sr., Albion, Neb.) won the shot put at the Wildcat Open with a new personal best mark of 52’ 4 3/4”. Her mark is the second best throw in NCAA Division II this year and is an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark. It is also a new Wayne State record breaking her previous best mark of 51’ 9 1/4” set in December 2014.
The Wildcats will send a group of athletes to the 40th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Friday & Saturday, while the rest of the squad will participate in the Fred Beile Invitational in Crete, NE.
Winona State
Women’s Track: Megan Seidl (So, Bartlett, Ill.) was the highest Division II finisher in the 200 meters in the predominately Division I, Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota. Megan placed 12th in a field of 64 athletes with a personal best time of 25.61 seconds. This time also gives Megan the third fastest indoor 200 meter time in school history.
Women’s Field: Alissa Rausch (Sr, Merrill, Wis.) was the highest non-Division I finisher in the Shot Put in the predominately Division I, Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota. Alissa finished the competition in fourth place with a toss of 48’ 2” (14.68m), which is the 7th-best throw in Division II this winter.
