NSIC Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Nathan Hancock
Senior
Independence, Mo.

Minnesota State


Hancock was the top Division II finisher in the heptathlon this past weekend at the Jack Johnson Classic held at the University of Minnesota. Hancock finished in fourth place among a field of primarily Division I athletes with 5,232 points.  That mark provisionally qualified him for the NCAA National Championships and also ranks fourth in Division II.

Hunter continued on with his record-breaking season at the Jack Johnson Classic.  Hunter finished the day in first-place of the 60-meter hurdle event with an automatic qualifying time.  His time of 7.74 broke his own school-record and not only ranks him first in Division II, but also fourth across all divisions. This marks the second time this season Hunter has been named NSIC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana

Men’s Track: Nathan Hauge (Jr. Sioux Falls, S.D.) competed in the 3000-meter run at the WSC Wildcat Open and provisionally qualified with a time of 8:24.80, which currently ranks 24th in the nation.
Men’s Field: CJ Ham (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) broke his own school record in the weight throw and provisionally qualified in two events this past Saturday at the 13th annual Wildcat Open. In his first attempt, CJ Ham broke his own school record taking the top mark in the weight throw provisionally qualifying with a heave of 18.86 meters (61’10.5”) which is ranked 13th in the nation. Ham also took third in the shot put provisionally qualifying with a throw of 15.78 meters (51’ 9.25”).
The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn.

Concordia-St. Paul
CU competed in the UW-River Falls Flacon Winter Classic.
Men’s Field: Mike Cullen (Sr., Green Bay, Wis. / Green Bay Preble HS) placed first in shot put with a heave of 52’4.75” and was first in the weight throw with a toss of 50’11”.

University of Mary
Men’s Track: Kevin Carpenter (Fr., Colville, Wash.) won the 3,000 meter run at the Concordia Moorhead Cobber Open. He covered the distance in 8:49.83 to claim one of the top U-Mary men’s finishes of the day.
Men’s Field: Sophomore Jerrod Shaffner placed first in the triple jump, just ahead of teammate William Kaigler. Shaffner won the event with a mark of 13.45 meters, edging Kaigler’s top mark of 13.42 meters.
The Marauders next compete at the Thundering Herd Classic in Fargo, N.D., on February 6-7.

Minnesota Duluth
With Frank Deluca leading the way, the University of Minnesota Duluth’s freshmen class made their presence felt at the two-day Warren Bowlus Open at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Men’s Track: Frank Deluca finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.21 and was also part of UMD’s title-winning 4 x 400 relay unit. Deluca teammed with fellow rookies Garrett Benz and Connor Behm and senior team captain Phil d’Entremont in that event, clocking in at 3.26.32. Deluca, Behm, freshman Nick Beattie, and senior Jacob Nelson took second in the 4x200 relay, doing so in a time of 1:32.66.
Men’s Field: Sophomore Jason Lilja was the lone Bulldog besides Deluca to capture an individual championship, leaping 6’4.75” to prevail in the high jump.
UMD will remain in Duluth next Saturday to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge at the College of St. Scholastica.

Minnesota State
The Mavericks competed at the University of Minnesota’s Jack Johnson Classic last weekend.
Men’s Track: Myles Hunter (So., Conyers, Ga.) continued on with his record-breaking season at the Jack Johnson Classic.  Hunter finished the day in first-place of the 60-meter hurdle event with an automatic qualifying time.  His time of 7.74 broke his own school-record and not only ranks him first in Division II, but also fourth across all divisions.
Richard Wilhite, Jr. ended the weekend in third-place during the 200-meters with a final time of 22.25.  Austin O’Brien also finished in third during the 3000-meters with a provisional qualifying time of 8:26.26.  The Maverick 4x400 relay team came in seventh, comprised of Javontee Brice, Zach Gearman, Victor Bowen and Emmanuel Matadi.
Men’s Field: Senior Nathan Hancock (Independence, Mo.) finally got a chance to participate in a full heptathlon event this past weekend at the Jack Johnson Classic.  The MSU record-holder in the event finished the weekend with 5,232 points which provisionally qualifies him for the National Championships and also ranks fourth in Division II.
Yet another third-place finish came from the hands to Rumeal Harris in the long jump with a lunge of 21’4.25”.
The Mavericks return to action next weekend as they are set to host the Ted Nelson Classic, in Myers Field House.

MSU Moorhead
Men’s Track: Kenny Andri (Sprints, Sr., Roseville, Calif./Del Oro HS) won the 400-meter run at the Cobber Duals on Saturday.  He ran a time of 50.75 which is eighth-best in the NSIC this season and also a personal-best.
Men’s Field: Beau Scheving (Throws, Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) won the shot put at the Cobber Duals on Saturday. He had a toss of 48-1 3/4 to win the event which is ninth-best in NSIC this season.

Minot State
Minot State University men’s track team set a school record and had two event winners Saturday at the Concordia College Cobber Duals Saturday.
Men’s Track: Tyler Bates (So., Watford City, N.D. / Watford City) won an individual event and was a part of a winning relay team at the Concordia College Cobber Duals Saturday. Bates edged teammate Tyler Flatland to win the 200-meters with a time of 22.93 seconds. He then teamed with Flatland, Farai Madungwe and Glyn Borel to win the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:33.06, setting a Minot State school record.
Tyler Flatland (Watford City, N.D. / Watford City) ran the anchor leg of the 4x200 relay team that won Saturday’s meet and set a school record. He rinished runner up in the 200 to teammate Tyler Bates and was second overall in the men’s 400-meters with a time of 51.15.
The 4x200 relay team of Bates, Flatland Farai Madungwe (Jr., Harare, Zimbabwe / St. George’s) and Glyn Borel (Sr., San Jose, Calif. / Saint Francis / De Anza College) won the relay with a time of 1:31.40 as they sets new school record in the event.
Minot State moves forward in its indoor season, traveling to North Dakota State for the NDSU Thundering Herd Classic Friday and Saturday in Fargo.

Northern State
Northern State had two individual titles at the Concordia Moorhead Cobber Duals.  
Men’s Track: The Northern men’s 4x400 relay squad of Nick Lindwurm, Brandon Krein, Mark Gilkerson and Cameron Sannes won the event with a time of 3:32.8. The 4x800 team of Krein, Sannes, Clay Danielson and Hunter Kopff won the race in a time of 8:17.85.
Men’s Field: Brady Harr and Jake Olson finished third and fourth, respectively in the shot put. Harr recorded a toss of 43’2.25” and Olson had a throw of 43’2”.
Northern returns to action next weekend as they travel to Fargo, N.D., for the Thundering Herd Classic hosted by North Dakota State.

Southwest Minnesota State
Men’s Track: Alejandro Sanchez, (So., Plano, Texas / Plano East HS) captured fourth place in the 800-meter at the University of Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite. Competing mostly against Division I athletes, Sanchez crossed the line in 1:55.39, the second fastest time in the NSIC this season. Sanchez has the top mark in the NSIC this year after recording a 1:55.0 last week at the Minnesota State Open.
Men’s Field: Ben Tonsager (Jr., St. James, Minn. / St. James HS) recorded a toss of 15.39m to place fifth in the shot put at the Wayne State Invite this past Saturday.

Sioux Falls
With many of University of Sioux Falls’ top performers in action over the weekend, the Cougars definitely left their mark at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, in Wayne, Neb.   
Men’s Field: Scott Greenman (Pole Vault, Jr., Clovis Calif./Clovis HS) won the men’s pole vault competition and improved his provisional qualifying mark as he took the Wildcat Invitational title by clearing 5.00 meters (16’4.75”) for the first time this season. Greenman’s mark now ranks sixth in Division II and is the sixth time he has cleared 5.00 meters or higher during the indoor season.
The Cougars will split their squad next weekend, sending athletes to the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. and more to the USD Alumni Open in Vermillion, S.D.

St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State competed at the Jack Johnson Invite at the University of Minnesota.
Men’s Track: JT Butler (Fr. Montgomery, Minn.) finished in seventh place in the 200 meter dash as he finished with a time of 22.59. JoVonte Suber (So. St. Louis, Mo.) finished in 5th place in the 600 meter run, with a time of 1:21.38.
Men’s Field:   Ryan Johnson (Jr. Amery, Wis.) put up personal best in both the shot put and weight throw. He finished 12th in shot put with a throw landing at 51’ 1” (15.57m) and fifth in weight throw, throwing 61’1.25” (18.62m).
Keyshawn Davis (so. Milwaukee, Wis.) finished in 5th place in the triple jump as he soared 14.19m. Marcus Welk (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) led the way as he vaulted to a height of 4.47 meters, landing himself in third place.
The Huskies travel to Mankato, Minn. to take part in the Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday.

Wayne State
Men’s Track: William Ernst (Senior, Omaha, Neb.) won the 200 meter dash at the WSC Wildcat Open in a time of 22.85 seconds, which vaulted him up to #7 on the NSIC rankings for the event.  He also ran a personal best time in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.16 seconds.
Men’s Field: Derek Lahm (Sophomore, Columbus, Neb.) won the triple jump at the WSC Wildcat Open with a personal best mark of 46’4 1/4”, which put him on the NSIC charts at #4.  He also ran a leg on the 4 x 400 relay which picked up a first place finish.
The Wildcats will send a group of athletes to the 40th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Friday & Saturday, while the rest of the squad will participate in the Fred Beile Invitational in Crete, Neb.
