Sioux Falls, S.D. – With a 76-64 victory over Augustana College, the Northern State University women's basketball team advanced to Monday's NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Semifinals. NSU improves to 24-6 overall on the year after the 12 points victory.
The Wolves trailed 29-33 heading into the second half of play from the Sanford Pentagon. NSU chipped away at the Viking lead in the early minutes off the second.
Rachel Krogman pushed the Wolves within one, before Augie broke away increasing their lead to five with 14 minutes remaining. Krogman then grabbed the lead for the Wolves with a basket and one. The women did not look back, going on a 32-20 run in the final 12 minutes of play.
Krogman led the Wolves with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while going 10-for-18 from the floor. She added two assists and two blocks in the win. Northern's three senior starters combined for 52 of the teams 76 points.
Sadie Stotesbery and
Megan Mutchler tallied 14 and 12 points respectively, as Stotesbery notched her third double-double of the season adding a career high 14 boards.
Junior
Devon Brecke connected both of the team's long range hoops, scoring eight points and dishing out a career high seven assists.
Paige Waytashek matched Brecke's point total of eight in the game, adding four assists, three steals, and a blocked shot.
Kara Hofschild,
Alexis Tappe, and
Lauren Deadrick combined for the Wolves eight points off the bench. Northern out-rebounded the Vikings 46-41 in the game, scoring 19 points off offensive boards.
As a team the Wolves combined for a season high 42 points in the paint led by Krogman. NSU went 15-of-25, shooting 60 percent, in the second half to secure the victory. For the game, the Wolves shot 47.5 percent from the floor and held Augustana at 32.4 percent.
NSU will play the winner of the Minnesota Crookston versus Minnesota State game currently in progress. The Wolves and Golden Eagles/Mavericks will tip-off from the Sanford Pentagon at 12 p.m. in the first semifinal matchup of the day. Northern is 3-0 against the Golden Eagles and Mavericks this season.
