LAKE CITY, Minn. (The Jewel – Par 71 – 6669 yards) – Defending NSIC Men’s Golf Champions of Minnesota State shot an opening round two-over-par 286 to lead after round one of the 2015-16 NSIC Men's Golf Championship played at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. The Mavericks hold an eight stroke lead over St. Cloud State (294 +10) and a nine stroke lead over Winona State (295 +11). The Mavericks had four golfers in the top ten on the individual leaderboard after the first round.
The Mavericks were led by Kelton Schmitz who shot a two-under-par round of 69 to open up championship play. Schmitz birdie five holes over the first round of play. Michael Schmitz of Winona State was just one stroke off the lead with his one-under-par round of 70. He scored three birdies in the first of two rounds played this fall at the Jewel. MSU’s Gonzalo Martinez sits at even par and in third place on the leaderboard.
Round two of the championship will be a shotgun start on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The final 36 holes of the 72-hole championship will be played April 9-10 at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex in Smithville, Missouri.
