NSIC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Molly Montonye (Junior, Graceville, Minn. / Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley HS)
MSU Moorhead


Molly Montonye won her second meet of 2014 and the fourth of her collegiate career with a time of 17:40 at Jimmie Invitational in Jamestown, N.D.  Montonye’s time was nearly a full minute faster than her winning time last year as she helped the Dragons to a second-place team finish. This marks the second time this season Montonye has been named NSIC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week (9/16/14).

NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
The Vikings had five out of the six runners turn in top-12 performances at the Briar Cliff Invitational in McCook Lake, S.D. The Vikings were led by sophomore Cassidy Soli and senior Kaitlyn Yoerg. Soli turned in a team-best for Augustana finishing second, clocking a time of 17:56.  Yoerg followed Soli’s performance tabbing a fourth-place finish with a time of 18:17.
Up Next: Oct. 18 at  the UW-Oshkosh AAE Invitational in Oshkosh, Wis.

Bemidji State
Emily Turner (Jr., Windom, Minn.) led the Bemidji State cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the 5,000-meter Jimmie Invitational in Jamestown, N.D. Oct. 10. Turner trimmed 1:52 from her 2013 on the same course to finish 22nd individually in a time of 20:07.00. Bemidji State posted a team score of 133.
Up Next: Oct. 24 when they travel to Bismarck, N.D. to  compete in the Mike Thorson Invitational.

Concordia-St. Paul
Erin Spatenka ran a time of 19:41.7 to finish in 78th place at Lucian Rosa hosted by UW-Parkside. She ran a new personal best time improving by 33.4 seconds upon her time from the Luther All-America Invite four weeks ago.  She ran the third fastest Concordia time on the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country course (Janet Brownawell and Emily Stanzyk).  She becomes the 11th fastest Concordia woman in school history for 5 Kilometers races.

University of Mary
The Marauders, who are receiving votes in the USTFCCCA poll, captured their second meet title in three outings this season, nudging MSU Moorhead 30 to 34 for the Jamestown Invitational crown. Five U-Mary runners placed in the top 13 with freshman Alexis Zeis leading the Marauders for the third time in three meets this season. The Bismarck, N.D., traversed the 5K course in 17:57 to place third in the race.  Senior Erin Leier placed fourth overall with a mark of 18:05 while freshman Kaycie Stewart ran sixth in 18:26. Sophomores Katelyn Engh (19:11) and Kennedy Robbins (19:12) finished 11th and 13th overall

Minnesota Duluth
The Bulldogs were idle last week.

Minnesota State
The Mavericks were idle last week.
Up Next: The Bob Waxlax Invitational in St. Cloud, Minn., slated for Oct. 24th.

MSU Moorhead

Minot State
Minot State placed third at the University of Jamestown Jimmie Invite Friday at Hillcrest Golf Course. Minot State trailed just fellow NSIC teams University of Mary and MSU Moorhead at the event. Catie LeDesma (5-6, So., Chula Vista, Calif. / Otay Ranch) paced the Beavers as she has done all seasons, finishing sixth with a time of 18:33. She was just under a minute off the winning pace. Allison Windish (5-5, Jr., Wimbledon, N.D. / Barnes County North) and Samantha Huether (So., 5-0, Minot, N.D. / Minot) finished second and third for the Beavers, both placing in the top 20. Windish was 17th overall with a 19:35, while Huether was 20th with a 19:39.

Northern State
Lindsey Gast was the top runner for NSU as she finished 16th in the 5K race with a time of 19:30 at the University of Jamestown Jimmie Invite. Stacey McDonald placed 27th in a time of 20:32. Courtney Brandt was just behind her teammate in 29th and ran a time of 20:42.

Sioux Falls
The USF Women’s Team finished ninth with 261 points at the Briar Cliff invite in McCook Lake, S.D. Freshman Tenley Schwartz led the Cougars as she finished 32nd with a clocking of 19:55.01. Freshman Kiana Hein was 33rd at 20:00.77 while freshman Grace Stiansen was 56th at 21:22.81.  In addition, USF senior Lindsey Mettler was 68th at 22:37.68 while freshman Cathryn Hanzlik took 72nd at 23:06.22.
Up Next: Oct. 25 at Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton, S.D.

Southwest Minnesota State
The SMSU women’s team finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Briar Cliff Invitational in McCook Lake, S.D. Savannah Ramirez finished the 5k race in 16th place with a time of 18:51 to lead the Mustangs. Julia Orlow earned a 22nd place finish with a mark of 19:09, while Paige Yi crossed the finish line in 19:28 to earn 27th place.

St. Cloud State
The St. Cloud State women’s cross country team was idle over the weekend.  
The Huskies will return to action on Oct. 18 with an appearance at the Drews/Neubauer Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in LaCrosse, Wis.
SCSU will return home on Oct. 24 of the Bob Waxlax Invitational.  The meet will take place at the Wapicada Golf Course in nearby Sauk Rapids, Minn.

Upper Iowa
The Peacock women’s cross country team competed at the Lucian Rosa Invite at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.  The team placed 17th, two spots up from last season, and freshman Hallie Whitley set a new program record in the 5K. Whitley came across in a time of 19:32.7 as she averaged 3:54 per thousand meters to place 63rd.  Fellow freshman Courtney Carroll placed 95th with at 20:32.8 (4:06 pace) and sophomore Chandra Smith placed 98th finishing her run in 20:36.4 (4:07 pace).

Wayne State
Kinsey Clark - (Sophomore, Broken Bow, NE) ran to a 30th place finish overall out of a field of 108 runners with a time of 19:41 on the 5,000 meter course at the Briar Cliff Invite at McCook Lake, SD on Saturday.  The team placed 8th with 217 points out of 12 teams.  
Up Next: Oct. 25 at the Mount Marty College Invite in Yankton, SD.

Winona State
The Warriors were idle last week.

NSIC Cross Country Championship
NSIC Cross Country teams will compete in various meets throughout the fall with the season culminating in Wayne, Neb. on Saturday, November 8 at the NSIC / US Bank Cross Country Championships.  The NCAA Regional will take place two weeks later on Saturday, November 22 again in Wayne, Neb. The NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, December 6 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. in conjunction  with the NCAA Fall Sports Festival.
