North posted a 4-0 record on the week and went 3-0 at the Ranger Duals as the sophomore 125-pounder took down the No. 1-ranked wrestler leading the Vikings to a 2-1 record at the duals. Ranked fifth in NCAA Division II at 125 pounds, North allowed just five points in his four bouts while scoring 26of his own. North started his day at the Ranger Duals with a 10-2 major decision win over McKendree’s Jose Torres. Against top-ranked Alex Johns of No. 10 Indianapolis, North earned a 3-1 decision, toppling the freshly-crowned No. 1 ranked wrestler. North closed out the day with a 6-1 win over Findlay’s Ben Sergent, springing the Vikings toward their second win of the day. On the season, North is 20-3, with an undefeated 10-0 record against Division II wreslters.
2013-14 NSIC Wrestling Notes
Augustana - Augustana posted a 2-1 record at the Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wis. on Saturday, Jan. 18. Led by TJ North and Sean Derry, who both finished the day with 3-0 records, Augustana split against a pair of ranked teams in No. 15 McKendree and No. 10 Indianapolis before taking down Findlay (Ohio) in the final dual. The Vikings dropped the first dual, 28-8, to McKendree where Derry and North each logged major decision wins, the only victories for Augustana. Squaring off with No. 10 Indianapolis, Augustana trounced the Greyhounds, winning seven bouts, including a pair of pins at 141 and 149 pounds, on the way to a 38-9 win. TJ North opened the dual with a 3-1 decision win over No. 1 ranked Alex Johns of UIndy. The Vikings then closed out the Ranger Duals with another convincing victory, this time taking down Findlay 34-9. Augustana opened the match with five straight wins, led by pins at 133 and 149 pounds. Augustana then closed out the match with wins in the final three bouts.

U-Mary - U-Mary was idle last week. The next action for the Marauers is set for February 1st at St. Cloud and February 2 at Upper Iowa.
Minnesota State - Minnesota State wrestling fell at home to MSU Moorhead this past Thursday, 24-16. MSU found itself down early after giving up a fall and a forfeit. Alphonso Vruno gathered the first points for the Mavericks with a decision win of 13-8. Weston Droegemueller found himself in a tug of war with Connor MacGregor but couldn’t keep up with him in the third period, falling 14-9. Adam Cooling kept his winning streak alive with a 5-1 decision and Sawyer Hoffman took care of business with a 7-3 win to pull MSU within 6 points. MSU had momentum but Darick Vancura would loss by a fall after 37 seconds. Scott VanDeLoo lost to Matt Lewellen who would guarantee the victory for the Dragons. Brendan Eichmann won his weight class 7-1.
Senior Corby Running would win the heavy weight class with a major decision, 11-3. He was the only maverick to win by anything other than a decision win. His four takedowns and a reversal showed how much control he had in the match.
MSU Moorhead - Conner Monk (174 pounds, Jr., Wausau, Wis. / Wausau West HS) had a solid 2-0 week to lead MSUM to a 1-1 mark in NSIC duals last week. Monk recorded a key pin in the Dragons’ 24-16 win over Minnesota State, Mankato on Thursday night. Monk pinned Derrick Vancura -- who entered the match with a 22-7 record -- in just 37 seconds at 174 to give MSUM a 21-9 lead in the dual. A night later against No. 10-ranked Upper Iowa, Monk edged Upper Iowa’s Colbey Vance to earn a 6-5 win at 174 and help MSUM climb back into the dual.
Matt Lewellen’s outstanding senior season continued for MSUM. He improved to 23-9 on the year with a pair of wins last week. Lewellen beat Minnesota State’s Scott VandeLoo, 3-1 at 184 pounds to clinch the dual win over the Mavericks on Thursday. A night later, Lewellen beat Matt Gobin, 2-0 at 184 pounds to help the Dragons close the gap to 18-12 against Upper Iowa.
Minot State - Joshua Douglas- Junior, 133 pounds, Kissimmee, Fla. (Celebration HS) had a fantastic weekend as he went 3-1 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Saturday Jan. 18. Douglas won two matches by pinning his opponent and then won his last bout of the day with a 16-0 technical fall over Adam State’s Martin Ramirez. Douglas now has an overall record of 11-9 and has a team-high 29 team points.
Minot State University wrestling picked up their first dual win of the 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals. After getting off to a slow start on the day, the Beavers (1-9 Overall, 0-3 NSIC) wrestled better in their last three matches including a 35-13 win over Newman University. In the win against Newman, Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.), Jon Wilson (So., 149, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) all notched wins by fall to lead MISU to their first win in over a year. Douglas, led the way for Minot State on the day as he went 3-1 during his four bouts. In the fourth and final dual of the day, MISU gave nationally ranked No. 11 Adams State all they could handle. However, the Grizzlies were able to hold off the Beavers in a 27-26 win for ASU. In the loss, Paasch and Bobby Bartz (Sr., HWT, Harvey, N.D.) picked up wins by fall for the Beavers. Paasch now leads the team with eight wins by fall for the season. The Beavers have one more non-conference dual against University of Regina on the road on Thursday Jan. 23 before they resume Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals.
Northern State - The Northern State wrestling team returns home for a pair of matches against NSIC foes this weekend. St. Cloud State and Northern face-off at 7 p.m. Friday in Aberdeen while Upper Iowa will be the opponent for a 2 p.m. dual Saturday, the Wolves are coming off a 1-3 weekend at the UNK Midwest Duals this past week.
NSU defeated Newman 33-6 for its lone victory at UNK, the Wolves lost to three ranked opponents last Saturday in Fort Hays State, Nebraska-Kearney and San Francisco State. Sean Havlovic had the best day for the Wolves, going 3-1 at 157 pounds. Anthony Bruno (125), Beau Voegeli (149) and Blake Lundgren (165) all went 2-2. Northern is 1-1 this year in home duals and is 0-1 in the NSIC.
Southwest Minnesota State - Justin Reinsma (133, Sr., Slayton, Minn. / Murray Country Central) went 5-0 this week and became just the eighth wrestler in Southwest Minnesota State history to record 100 career wins. Reinsma’s 100th career win came in SMSU’s 31-6 loss to No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney at the Midwest Duals on Saturday. He defeated UNK’s Ryan Bauer by a 4-3 decision. Reinsma finished the week with two wins by decision, two by major decision and one win by fall. Reinsma is now 21-9 on the year and has eclipsed the 20-win mark each of the last three seasons. Reinsma led SMSU to its first dual victory over Augustana since the 1998-99 season on Tuesday when he defeated Morgan Engbrecht 6-4. Reinsma was one of five Mustangs to win their respective bouts versus the Vikings as SMSU went on to take the dual 15-14. Reinsma pushed his bout winning streak to six at the Midwest Duals as he won all four of his bouts on Saturday to lead SMSU to a 3-1 record on the day, including a 22-20 upset over No. 6 Fort Hays State. Reinsma defeated Newman University’s Kris Workman by a 10-0 major decision in SMSU’s 37-6 win over the Jets to open the day. Reinsma’s win over UNK’s Bauer was one of two bouts SMSU managed to win against the fourth ranked lopers. Reinsma continued his hot streak as he defeated FHSU’s Symon Seaton by major decision 11-1 to tie the team score at four after two bouts. Reinsma capped his busy day with a pin over Bethany College’s (Kan.) Ty Kolterman at 2:12. Reinsma now owns 102 career wins and passed SMSU’s Scott Dubbledee (101, 1979-84) for sixth on SMSU’s all-time wins list. Randy Dorn (1987-91) sits atop the list with 123 career wins.
St. Cloud State - Andy Pokorny (133 lbs, Sr., Bennington, Neb.) continued his perfect season in 2013-14 with a 2-0 record at the Wisconsin Parkside Ranger Duals on Jan.18. Pokorny will enter the upcoming NSIC dual match season with a 9-0 overall record in 2013-14. At UWP, Pokorny carded a 4:40 pin against Joseph Her of Wisconsin Parkside in the Huskies’ 38-3 victory over the Rangers. In the Huskies’ 25-6 victory over #15 ranked McKendree, Pokorny scored a 4-2 win over Brenden Murphy.
The Huskies are currently ranked third in the nation among NCAA Division II teams in the latest national poll. In the individual rankings for the Huskies, senior Andy Pokorny was ranked second in the nation at 133-pounds in the poll and sophomore Matt Nelson was ranked fourth in the nation at 141-pounds for the Huskies. Sophomore Clint Poster earned a fourth place ranking for the Huskies at 157-pounds and SCSU sophomoreGabe Fogarty was ranked second in the nation at 165-pounds in the poll. One of the biggest jumps in the individual polls this week was made by St. Cloud State’s Austin Goergen, who moved into the nation’s top eight with a number four national ranking at 285-pounds in the poll. SCSU now owns an 11-1, 0-0 NSIC record in 2013-14. On Jan. 18, the Huskies charted a 3-0 record at the Wisconsin Parkside Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wisc. The Huskies opened the day with a 31-10 win over Findlay and then continued in the next round with a 38-3 win over host Wisconsin-Parkside. In SCSU’s final match of the day, the Huskies charted a 25-6 win over #15 McKendree. Austin Goergen paces the Huskies with 21 wins (21-4) at 285-pounds this season. He also leads the Huskies with 11 pins this winter. SCSU will open its NSIC schedule on Jan. 24 with a trip to Northern State and a Jan. 25 showdown at MSU Moorhead.
Upper Iowa - Upper Iowa claimed a 28-12 victory in their Northern Sun Conference opener Friday night in Dorman Gym against MSU Moorhead. The Peacocks used three wins by fall and a major decision to fuel their victory in front of a large crowd on Blackout Night in Fayette. The victory improved UIU’s dual record to 9-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa claimed a 15-7 advantage in takedowns and a 5-1 advantage in reversals. The Peacocks scored 53 points on the night, while allowing only 35 to the Dragons. Mitch Funk, Edwin Cooper and Logan Hopp all earned wins by fall, while Carl Broghammer picked up a major decision. Broghammer is now just nine wins away from the all-time wins mark for the Peacocks. Zak Benitz and Dalton Westerlund earned the final two wins of the night for UIU. The Peacocks will head to Aberdeen, S.D. next Saturday, Jan. 25, for a NSIC dual against the Wolves of Northern State University. Upper Iowa will then head home quickly for a Sunday, Jan. 26, matinee against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. Both duals are set for 2 p.m. starts. The home dual versus the Mustangs will be Military Appreciation Day at Upper Iowa. The team will wear their signature camouflage singlets for the dual.
