NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota State senior Chris Reed (Omaha, Neb.) automatically qualified in the shot put and provisionally qualified in the weight throw at the Chuck Peterson Pre-Season Open on Saturday. Reed broke his own school record of 59’ 7.5” with a throw of 61’ 7.75” en route to a first-place finish in the shot put. He also placed first in the weight throw with a throw of 61’ 10.25”.

Augustana’s Harald Karbo (Distance, So., Stord, Norway) was the fourth Viking of the day to provisionally punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships when he ran the men’s 3k in 8:31.71. Karbo’s time is the top mark in Division II and the only qualifying time so far this season. Karbo is coming off a career-best 19th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, earning his first All-America honor.

Sioux Falls’ Brigitte Gross (Sr., Alexandria, S.D./Hanson HS) came away with titles Pole Vault and the 60m hurdles this weekend at the MSU Chuck Petersen Preseason Open. Gross’ vault of 12-6.75 (3.83m) helped her claim the title as she won the competition by over seven inches and also notched a NCAA provisional qualifying standard. She also holds the top mark in the Pole Vault in the NSIC this season and the second highest in Division II. In the hurdles, Gross edged out Hannah Mueller of Winona State to take the victory with her time of 8.99.

Augustana’s Kristin Brondbo (Distance, Sr., Steinkjer, Norway) posted an automatic qualifying time of 9:32.31 in the women’s 3,000-meter run to break former teammate Runa Falch’s school record by over five seconds. Brondbo, coming off her fourth straight All-American cross country performance, won the women’s 3k by over 20 seconds and set a new collegiate South Dakota record. Brondbo is currently the top place holder in Division II for the 3,000-meter run and one of three automatic qualifiers in any event at the Division II level.
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
Augustana opened the indoor track and field season at the MSU Chuck Peterson Preseason Open. Four Vikings hit qualifying marks, including Kristin Brondbo’s school record-breaking and automatic qualifying time in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Augustana is now idle until the Dordt Invitational on Jan. 18 in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Women’s Field: Kelsey Kaufmann (High Jump, So., Arlington, S.D.) won the women’s high jump and posted a provisional qualifying mark in the season-opening meet. The only athlete to clear 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches) in the event, Kaufmann earned her second career event win. Kaufmann enters the track and field team short on practice after she enjoyed a fruitful volleyball season with the Vikings.

Bemidji State
Women Track: The Bemidji State University track and field team opened the 2013-14 indoor season Dec. 7 with a trip to Duluth, Minn. for the College of St. Scholastica’s Opener. The Beavers were led by Kaneeshia Johnson (So., Rosemount, Minn.), who posted three top-six individual performances. The sophomore places second in the long jump with a jump of 16-07.00, fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.29 seconds and sixth in the triple jump (33-01.00). Johnson was one of four BSU student-athletes with top-four finishes. In addition, the Beavers’ 4x200-meter relay placed third (2:08.35). BSU will now break for the holidays and return to action Jan. 17-18 when it hosts the BSU Multi and Super 8 Open.
Concordia-St. Paul
The Golden Bears opened the 2013-14 indoor season at the Chuck Peterson Preseason Open at Myers Fieldhouse on the campus of Minnesota State University.
Women Field: Wakpor Ighovojah set a personal record in the high jump as she cleared 1.50m.
Women Track: Alyssa Christianson set the women’s indoor school record in her first performance as a Golden Bear with a time of 41.16 seconds, breaking Amanda Mueller’s former mark of 42.37 seconds set in 2002. Not only did she top the school record, but she won the event among 15 racers.
Men Field: Colin Goligoski set a personal record in the long jump with a leap of 6.44m to finish in sixth place.
Men Track: Ryan Guthrie set a personal record in the300m dash with a time of .39.52 to finish in seventh place.
University of Mary
Men Track & Field: Facing three NCAA Division I programs to open the 2013-14 indoor track and field season, the Marauders posted a handful of top three finishes. Senior Aaron Teigan placed second in the long jump with a top effort of 22-07.65 feet. Sophomore Jerrod Shaffner claimed third in the triple jump when he sailed 44-07.50 feet. In his first collegiate meet, freshman Nico Fonzi cleared 14-07.25 feet to capture third in the pole vault.
Women Field: Stephanie Fey (Jr., Groton, SD) broke a long-time U-Mary school record when she tossed the weight throw 52’ 10 3/4” to place fourth at the NDSU Dakota Duals in Fargo, ND, on Dec. 6. The performance was a national provisional mark and broke the Marauders record of Aubrey Baxter that dates back to 2005.
Women Track: Janet Johnson (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica) had a great opening day to the 2013-14 season at the NDSU Dakota Duals Classic in Fargo, ND, on Dec. 6, leading the Marauders to a pair of victories over NCAA Division I teams. In the span of just a half hour, Johnson won the 60 meter hurdles in a blazing national provisional and meet record time of 8.60 seconds. She came back to place fifth in the open 60 in a personal record time of 7.95. The senior also provisionally qualified in the long jump, placing second with an effort of 18-02.25 feet.
Minnesota Duluth
Men Track/Field: The University of Minnesota Duluth got an early start to its 2013-14 indoor track and field season this weekend by competing in The Opener at the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse on the College of St. Scholastica campus. The two-day, four-team event wrapped up this afternoon and among the highlights for UMD were 10 individual first-place finishes. Those included junior Phil D’Entremont (600-meter run; 1:22.87), senior captain Cole Toepfer (mile run; 4:16.72-and a Burns Wellness Fieldhouse record), senior Jason Coffin (1,000-meter run; 2:32.12), junior Holden Olson (200-meter dash; 23.44), junior Aaron Handorff (3,000-meter run; 9:11.36), senior Nathan Knop (high jump; 1.95 meters, 6-04.75), freshman Jason Lilja (long jump; 6.68 meters, 21-11.00), junior captain Nick Moran (weight throw; 16.16 meters, 53-00.25), freshman Nick Krouse (triple jump; 12.33 meters, 40-05.50) and sophomore Appo Agbamu (shot put; 14.75 meters, 48-04.75). The Bulldogs will now be off until Jan. 11 when they head to St. Paul, Minn. for the Bethel University Open.
Women Track/Field: The highlights for UMD were six individual first-place finishes. Those included senior Kaitlin Hassing (600-meter run; 1:36.66), sophomore Madeline Schaeffer (60-meter hurdles; 9.28), junior Victoria Zoller (1,000-meter run; 3:06.74), junior Amanda Boman (3,000-meter run; 10:55.62), sophomore Kayla Wiltrout (pole vault, 3.35 meters) and junior Amelia Maher (pentathlon; 3,326 points – a NCAA Division II provisional mark. In addition, freshman Samantha Rivard placed second to St. Scholastica’s Chelsea Johnson, the 2013 NCAA III national cross country champion, in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 17:03.00. That also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA II indoors. UMD also produced a pair of relay winners Saturday -- junior Maja Shryer, freshman Courtney Ryan, freshman Amanda Kolb and junior Erin Pangerl in the 4 x 200 and Schaeffer, Hassing, freshman Madison Sachs and junior Molly George in the 4 x 400. The Bulldogs will now be off Jan. 17 when they head to Bemidji, Minn. for the BSU Multi-Meet and Super 8 Invitational.
Minnesota State
Men Track: Junior Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) finished in first-place in the 200-meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 22.27. He also took fifth-place in the finals of the 60-meter dash crossing the finish line with a time of 7.07.

Women Track: Junior Sid’Reshia Floyd (New Hope, Minn.) ran a provisional qualifying time of 7.72 in the 60-meter dash as she finished in first-place at the Chuck Peterson Pre-Season Open on Saturday.
Women Field: In the long jump freshman Brieanna Puckett (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) provisionally qualified with a leap of 5.62-meters in finishing in second place at the Chuck Peterson Pre-Season Open.
Minnesota State had eight athletes either provisionally qualify or automatically qualify at the Chuck Peterson Pre-Season Open, highlighted by Chris Reed’s (Omaha, Neb.) automatic- qualifying throw of 61’ 7.5” in the shot put. That throw broke his own school record of 59’ 7.5” he set last season. He also met the provisional-qualifying standard in the weight throw with a mark of 61’ 10.25”. Junior Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) finished in first-place and senior Carmono Lane (Chicago, Ill.) in second-place as they both provisionally qualified in the 200-meter dash with times of 22.27 and 22.28 respectively. Senior Slater Powell and freshman Benjamin Ojika met the provisional-qualifying standard in the 60-meter hurdles as Powell finished with a time of 8.18 while Ojika finished with a time of 8.29. In the high jump freshman Frank Veldman finished in second-place with a provisional-qualifying leap of 2.04-meters. In the triple jump sophomore Khalil Jor’dan (Eagan, Minn.) finished in first-place with a jump of 14.80-meters while senior David Pearcill (Apple Valley, Minn.) took second with a leap of 14.56-meters, both meeting the provisional-qualifying standard.
On the women’s side five different Mavericks provisionally qualified. Junior Sid’Reshia Floyd (New Hope, Minn.) provisionally qualified in the 60-meter dash in finishing in first-place with a time of 7.72. Freshman Nicole Larson (Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Faryn Wirkus (Edgar, Wis.) each provisionally qualified in the pole vault with vaults of 3.58-meters. Freshman Brieanna Puckett (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a leap of 5.62-meters meeting the provisional qualifying standard in the long jump. In the weight throw junior Morgan Stampley (St.Paul, Minn.) provisionally qualified with a throw of 16.62-meters.
The Mavericks will continue action on January 11 as it hosts the MSU Alumni Open.
MSU Moorhead
Men Track: MSU Moorhead will open their season on Jan. 18 at the Jack Johnson Invite at the University of Minnesota.
Minot State
Minot State opens their season on January 18 at the Bemidji State Super 8 Open.
Northern State
NSU competes for the first time this season at the NSU Open on Jan. 18 in Aberdeen, S.D.
SMSU
The Mustangs open their season on Jan. 11 at the Minnesota State Alumni Open in Mankato, MInn.
Sioux Falls
The USF track and field team opened up their season on Saturday and had several impressive performances while competing at the MSU Mankato Chuck Petersen Preseason Open and the Yellowjacket Holiday Open. USF came away from the weekend with three school records, seven NCAA provisional marks, and nine event titles.

Women Track: While competing in the 600m dash, Kendra Knight (Sr., Mitchell, S.D./Mitchell HS) came in second overall with her time of 1:35.60. Knight’s time is the second fastest in the NSIC this season.
Men Track: Blake Stevenson (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D./Aberdeen Central) notched a victory in the 800m dash when he ran a 1:56.15, winning the race by over two seconds. His time is currently the top time in the 800m dash in the NSIC this season and the sixth fastest in Division II. Stevenson was also a member of the 4x400m relay that won with their time of 3:30.18.
Men Field: In the men’s Pole Vault, Scott Greenman (So., Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) claimed the title with his vault of 15-9 (4.80m) which is an NCAA provisional qualifying standard. The vault is currently the top mark in the NSIC this season and is also the second highest in Division II. Greenman also is the defending NSIC champion in the outdoor Pole Vault and also qualified for both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships during his freshman season.
St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State is set to kick off the 2014 Indoor Track & Field season with their first meet on Jan. 11 as they head to the Mankato Alumni Open..

Wayne State
Wayne State will open their season on December 13-14 at the Nebraska-Kearney Preseason Open in Kearney, Neb.
Winona State
Women’s Track: Katie Bagley (So, Janesville, WI) won the 800m at the Chuck Peterson Preseason Open in a time of 2:21.58 in her first ever indoor race at that distance. That is the 14th best time in NCAA II in this young season.
Women’s Field: Elisa Moenkedick (Sr, Perham, MN) won the Weight Throw at the Chuck Peterson Preseason Open with a provisional toss of 17.55m (57’ 7”) which leads the NSIC and is the 6th best throw in NCAA II this season.
