#21 Chris Smith (RB, 5-8, 190, Jr., Brown Deer, Wis. / Brown Deer HS)
Upper Iowa University
Chris Smith, for the second week in a row, fourth time this season and sixth time in his three years in an Upper Iowa uniform, rushed for over 200 yards in a game. But on Saturday night in Fayette, Smith became set the new single-season mark for rushing yards in a season at Upper Iowa breaking Mike Hatten’s record of 1,426 yards in 2000. Smith’s 258 yards Saturday against Sioux Falls push his season total to 1,517 with two games to play, but more importantly the yards and his three touchdowns of 3, 18 and 59 yards fueled UIU to their fifth victory of the season, 30-28. The 258 yards are the third most all-time in a game by a Peacock runner. Smith owns the top three marks of 278, 266 and 258 on that list. His 14 rushing touchdowns this season rank fourth all-time at UIU and the junior from Brown Deer, Wis. is now just 167 yards shy of the all-time rushing yards in a career mark held by T.C. Hicks (3,198 - 2004-07) after reaching the 3,000-yard plateau tonight (3,032). This marks the second time this season Smith has been named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week (9/23/13).

SMSU trailed 27-19 early in the third quarter when Twedt forced a fumble and teammate Tyler Flud recovered the ball and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. In overtime, Twedt intercepted WSU’s Jack Nelson at the 1-yard line to secure SMSU’s first win over WSU since 2008 and just its third since 1993. Twedt is tied for the team-lead with three interceptions and is third on the squad with 66 tackles.

His only reception went for 55 yards and a touchdown to total 157 all-purpose yards. The last Bemidji State player to reach the 1,000 yard milestone was Tyler Olson in 2004 when he rushed for 1,234 yards. His accomplishment marks the 10th time a player has rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a season at BSU since 1971. The 100 yard game for Walker was his fifth time reaching the century mark this season. He ranks fifth in the NSIC in rushing with 114.2 yards per game.

BSU fell 45-6 to No. 21 St. Cloud State Saturday in its home finale. The loss marked the fifth straight for a BSU team that owns a 2-7 NSIC and 0-5 NSIC North record. The Beavers trailed 17-0 at half, but a 21-point third quarter for the Huskies allowed the road team to open a 38-0 advantage through three. BSU’s lone touchdown came on the second play of the fourth quarter. The contest marked the final home game for 14 senior student-athletes, including running back Avery Walker, who surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in 2013 to become the first Beaver to do so since 2004. The Beavers look to snap the five-game losing streak (the longest for BSU since 1997) Nov. 9 in a 1 p.m. road contest at Minnesota State University Moorhead. BSU’s longest rivalry is MSU Moorhead, as the teams have met 79 times since 1929. The Beavers are 12-1 in the last 13 meetings, but all-time the Dragons lead 43-33-3. Since 1948, the two teams have played for a traveling trophy, The Battle Axe, which is the second longest traveling trophy tradition in NCAA Division II. In Axe Games, MSUM leads 34-28-3. Bemidji State Head Coach Jeff Tesch is 13-4 against his alma matter.
Concordia-St. Paul
Concordia senior Zach Moore set the school’s career sack record in the loss at Augustana as his 1.5 sacks in the game give him 31.0 in his four years, surpassing Matt Woodford’s former mark of 30.0 (1996-99). Minnesota Crookston
The University of Minnesota Crookston football team fell 57-3 to sixth-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday. The Golden Eagles were unable to contain a potent Bulldog offense that scored 42 points in the first half and accumulated over 400 yards of offense. On the other side of the ball the Golden Eagles were unable to get any offense going. On a positive note, freshman kicker Mike Maw connected on the first field goal of his young career and Tevin Kellum had 17 tackles to tie for fourth all time for total tackles in a game at UMC. The Golden Eagles will return home one last time next Saturday to host Northern State for Señior Day as 11 seniors play their final home game in Maroon and Gold at Ed Widseth Field.
Minnesota Duluth
The 8-1 Bulldogs will be on the road for their final two outings of the 2013 regular season, beginning this Saturday when UMD heads to Bismarck, N.D., for a NSIC North engagement with Mary. The Bulldogs are 6-0 lifetime against the Marauders and have outscored them 264-70 in the process. The two clubs have met just two times previously on Mary’s home turf (2011 and 2009). UMD closed out the home portion of its 2013 regular season schedule by downing Minnesota Crookston Saturday. Seven different Bulldogs scored touchdowns in the victory, UMD’s eighth straight over the Golden Eagles. Freshman quarterback Drew Bauer completed 12 of 14 passes for 141 yards and a career-high four touchdowns before calling it an afternoon midway through the second quarter.
The Bulldogs currently rank second among all NCAA II clubs in time of possession (34:44), fifth in third down conversion defense (opponents are connecting at a 26.4 percent rate), sixth in kick off return average (26.9 yards per return), eighth in third down conversion percent (48.5 percent) and ninth in rushing offense (286.1 yards per game) and 12th in rushing defense (94.9 ypg). They’ve also recovered the second most fumbles of any team in the nation (15).
Aaron Roth caught a pair of passes in Saturday’s victory against Minnesota Crookston and that gave the 2012 All-NSIC North Division first team honoree an even 100 receptions for his career. He became the 12th Bulldog to ever reach that milestone and the second this fall (joining fellow junior wide out Zach Zweifel).
UMD has give up just 17 points in the first quarter this season (while racking up 121 of its own) and has outscored the opposition 68-13 in the final 15 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs are 34-2 in NSIC North Division play since the league instituted a divisional format in 2008. Both of those losses have been inflicted by St. Cloud State on the road (2012 and 2011).

Jake Hodge (QB, 6-1, 195, So., Kasson, Minn. / Kasson-Mantorville HS) had a big day for the Dragons in their 31-30 win over Minot State on Saturday. Despite being limited by an injury, Hodge completed 25-of-49 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns. He threw the eventual game-winning touchdown to freshman Dan Grande with 9:33 left in the game. He also connected with redshirt freshman Cory Ambrose on a 92-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. That play set a new school record for longest pass play, and was also the third-longest play from scrimmage in school history. #9 Leon LaDeaux (WR, 6-3, 200, Jr., Port Orchard, Wash. / South Kitsap HS / Central Washington), on just his fourth kick return of his Minot State career, LaDeaux made the highlight reel with a 98 yard TD in the Beavers 31-30 loss to Minnesota State-Moorhead. Against MSU-Moorhead, LaDeaux had three kick returns for 140 yards, averaging 46.7 yards per return and finished with 215 all-purpose yards as he finished with nine catches for 75 yards.

Sioux Falls
Missed scoring opportunities haunted Sioux Falls in a 30-28 loss to Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa. Carrington Hanna’s touchdown pass to Austin Vanhove with 5.6 seconds to play pulled the Cougars within two, and they recovered the onside kick, giving themselves one last gasp, but Hanna’s Hail Mary pass was picked off by the homestanding Peacocks as time expired. The Cougars were stopped on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line early in the game, and had a first and goal at the 7-yard line later in the first quarter, before a sack forced them to try a field goal, which was no good, one of two missed field goals by the Cougars in the first half. After the Peacocks (5-4, 2-3) seemingly pulled away by going up 23-7 after three quarters were in the books, the Cougars made it a one-score game on a short touchdown run by Nephi Garcia and a two-point conversion run by Josh Angulo, then had a chance to tie on a Hanna touchdown pass to Wes Smith. The two-point conversion failed, however, leaving the Cougars down 23-21, and the Peacocks pushed their lead to 30-21 on a 58-yard run by Chris Smith on the ensuing series. USF answered with a 94-yard drive to get back within two, but could only hope for the long bomb in the final seconds. Hanna completed 34 of 50 passes for 298 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for USF. Senior Wes Smith tallied a game-high 331 all purpose yards and led the Cougars’ receiving corp, hauling in 10 catches for 180 yards and a touchdown. Josh Angulo had 12 catches for 124 yards. Nephi Garcia rushed for 80 yards for the Cougars, putting him over 1,000 yards for the season, but ending his streak of seven consecutive games with 100 or more yards. Thad Campbell paced the Cougars’ defensive effort, posting 14 tackles and a forced fumble. Solomon St. Pierre, John Batinich and Carter Ahlers were credited with 10 tackles each while Grant Schindler (7 tackles) and Clint Wilson (6 tackles) both tallied sacks. Sioux Falls returns home to host No. 1 Minnesota State next Saturday.
Southwest Minnesota State
Tyler Tonderum (RB, 5-10, 191, Jr., Armstrong, Iowa) rushed for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries and in the process set the NSIC single-season record for rushing yards in SMSU’s thrilling 51-44 overtime victory over Winona State in Marshall. Tonderum, who entered the game as the second leading rushing in Division II, has rushed for more than 100 yards in a game seven times this season and has rushed for more than 130 yards in six games. Tonderum scored on runs of 3 and 6 yards, while he also added a key 58-yard run late in the fourth quarter that helped setup an SMSU field goal. On the first play of overtime he broke free for a 24-yard run and one play later SMSU scored the eventual game-winning touchdown. Tonderum set the record in the third quarter and has now rushed for 1,708 yards on 262 carries with 17 rushing touchdowns this season. He eclipsed the previous record of 1,586 yards set by Winona State’s Rayon Simmons in 2012.
Jared Twedt (S, 6-0, 196, So., Hudson, S.D.) racked up eight tackles, including seven solo stop and a career-high two for loss, while also recording the game-clinching interception and forced a fumble in SMSU’s 51-44 overtime win over WSU.
Mike Wenk (P, 6-0, 194, Jr., Hartford, S.D.) Tate Bunkers (S, 6-0, 200, Sr., Dell Rapids, S.D.) recorded a career-high 16 tackles with two for loss and also added a pass break-up and blocked a PAT in SMSU’s win over Winona State. Bunkers ranks second on the team in tackles with 76 and is tied for first with 41 solo stops.
St. Cloud State
Phillip Klaphake (Sr., QB, Princeton, Minn.) broke the school career passing record and led St. Cloud State to a 45-6 win at Bemidji State. Klaphake threw for 156 yards and two touchdowns, completing seven of 12 attempts, including an 86-yard touchdown strike. He also rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown on nine carries. Klaphake needed 64 passing yards to break Keith Heckendorf’s record of 9,695 yards and broke the record in the third quarter on a seven-yard completion deep in the Huskies zone. Klaphake has 9,788 career passing yards. He also surpassed the 2,000 yard single season passing mark for the fourth straight season and has 2,075 this season. He equaled his personal career high of 147 yards rushing and marked his fourth career 100 yard rushing game. Eric Poggenburg (Sr., DB, Cedarburg, Wis.) had a game-high 12 tackles to lead the Huskies on defense. He collected six solo stops, one sack and two tackles for loss. Tate Christopherson (Sr., LB, Maple Grove, Minn.) also had a solid defensive outing with his first collegiate interception, a fumble recovery, five tackles, half a sack and half a tackle for loss. St. Cloud State gained a season high 363 rushing yards and finished the game with 521 yards of total offense. The Huskies host Minot State next week.
Upper Iowa
Chris Smith (RB, 5-8, 190, Jr., Brown Deer, Wis., Brown Deer HS), for the second week in a row, fourth time this season and sixth in his three years in an Upper Iowa uniform, rushed for over 200 yards in a game.
Ethan Douglas (LB, 6-3, 235, Sr., Brodhead, Wis., Juda HS) was all over the field for the Peacocks on Saturday. He collected 19 tackles including 8 solo and 1.5 for loss. He now has 90 tackles on the season which ranks as the third highest total in the NSIC, just five behind the leader. Douglas led the UIU defense that came up huge on fourth down denying the Cougars on all three opportunities including a fourth and goal from the one-yard line. The Peacock defense was also able to control the Cougars’ running back, Nephi Garcia, who rushed for 80 yards and a score, but failed to reach 100 yards snapping a seven-game streak of hitting the century mark.
Other UIU standouts included Cole Jaeschke (23-30, 191 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 11 carries for 73 yards)... Derek Giesking (11 catches for 112 yards)...

Nelson tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Cameron Johnson and another to Tony Mueller while leading WSU to 701 yards of offense. The freshman completed passes to nine different players.
Ryan Gerts, LB, Jr., 6-1, 215, Bloomingdale, Ill. (Lake Park) led the Warrior defense with 11 total tackles against Southwest Minnesota State. Gerts recorded six solo stops and five assists in the game.
