Boag finished two games with a combined 51 points, 21 rebounds, five assists, five steals and four blocked shots to lead the Beavers to a pair of nonconference wins this past week. She had a huge game as Minot State knocked off nationally ranked NAIA University of Jamestown 82-67 Wednesday, scoring 29 points, adding 13 rebounds and three each in assists, blocks and steals. She scored 22 points and added eight boards in just 19 minutes in an 88-55 win over Presentation College. She was an outstanding 20 for 27 from the floor and hit 11 of 16 free throws on the week.

2013-14 NSIC Women’s Basketball Notes
AUGUSTANA -  Emily Schulte (G, 5-7, Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D. / O’Gorman) started her season off strong by scoring a career-high 22 points in a 95-79 win over Jamestown on Saturday.  The senior also displayed an impressive all-around game in the win with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.  Schulte went 7 of 11 (63.6%) on the night, including 3 of 5 from three.
14th-ranked Augustana opened up the season with a 95-79 win over Jamestown on Saturday.  Both teams played evenly in the first half with neither team getting up by more than seven points.  The teams went into the half tied at 40-40.  With around 12 minutes remaining in the game, the Vikings made their move.  Katie Meister grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the putback layup, triggering an 11-2 run by Augustana.  From there the Vikings’ defense clamped down on the Jimmies, holding them to just 31.3% shooting from the floor in the second half and never allowing their lead to drop below double digits.  Augustana forced 24 turnovers against Jamestown.  Senior Emily Schulte led the way for the Vikings with a career-high 22 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.  Schulte went 7 of 11 (63.6%) on the night, including 3 of 5 from three.  Rhianna Gullickson made the most of her first start, scoring a career-high 15 points.  The junior forward also grabbed six rebounds.  The Vikings return to the hardwood on Tuesday against William Penn at 7 p.m. in the Elmen Center.

BEMIDJI STATE - #10 Morgan Lee (G, 5-7, Sr., Hayward, Wis. / Hayward HS) totaled 73 points to average 24.3 points per game in three contests last week, as the Beavers went 3-0. She scored 27 points in the season opener, 17 points in her second game and then capped the week with a 29-point performance. Entering the season, the senior needed 72 points to reach the 1,000 career points plateau and did so during the second half Saturday. She is 16th Beaver to record 1,000 career points. In the three games, Lee shot 51 percent from the field (26-for-51) and went 15-for-29 (51.7%) from 3-point land. She also added 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals in 32.0 minutes per game. The 24.3 points per game leads the NSIC, while the 29 points is tied for first in the league for a single game performance this season. Lee was named most valuable player of the UCCS Classic, Nov. 15-16.
The Bemidji State women’s basketball team is 3-0 after a home win against Mayville State University (84-80) and road victories at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (85-76) and versus Western State Colorado University (85-61) last week. In addition to Lee’s success, senior Kate Warmack is averaging 16.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game this season. BSU has averaged 84.7 points per game in the first three contests of the season. The Beavers look to go 4-0 in nonconference play for the second consecutive season Tuesday when they host Finlandia University at 6 p.m.

CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Carissa Wolyniec (G, 5’11”, Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / DeLaSalle HS) caught fire from beyond the arc this weekend, hitting nine three on just 15 attempts (60.0%) in the Golden Bears two games as she averaged 17.5 PPG.  Wolyniec hit huge shots, including four threes in the second half, against #21 Michigan Tech on Friday night in CU’s 83-81 loss.  She shot 6-11 from the floor and added five boards, four assists and a block to go along with her 16 points.  She was even better on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears cruised past Wisconsin-Parkside.  Wolyniec scored 19 points on just 7-9 shooting and 5-7 from three as well as contributing five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist.  She was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Concordia (3-2) went 1-1 this weekend in the Radisson Hotel Roseville Basketball Classic.  Friday night’s game between #9 CU and #21 Michigan Tech was an absolute thriller.  There were six ties and eight lead changes in the second half alone as the two teams hit threes at a blinding rate.  Concordia had two opportunities to break an 81-81 tie late in the game before Kylie Moxley hit a layup with four seconds left to give MTU the deciding 83-81 advantage.  On Saturday, Concordia ran out to a double digit lead late in the first half against UW-Parkside and they didn’t look back.  CU cruised to a 73-53 win.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Linda Murray (F, 6-2, Sr., Fresno, Calif. / Edison HS / Merced CC) is back to top form after missing 2012-13. In two games this past weekend Linda Murray scored 43 points, corralled 18 rebounds and blocked four shots. Murray shot 56 percent on the weekend. The 6-2 post started the weekend against NAIA No. 1 Vanguard University with a 22 point, 11 rebound performance for her first double-double of the season. Murray followed up against Biola University with a 21 point, nine rebound performance. In addition to a strong performance offensively against 6-2 All-American Adijat Adams, Murray held Biola’s center just 10 points and five rebounds.
The University of Mary women’s basketball team completed their trip to California with a split against a pair of NAIA opponents. First up for U-Mary was No. 1 Vanguard. Tied 55-55 with 14:23 left to play, the Vanguard pulled away from a 90-75 win. U-Mary outshot Vanguard 40-38 percent, but the Lions held an 82-62 advantage from the line. VU attempted 13 more free throws than UM. The Lions held a distinctive advantage on the boards at 48-38, as well as in the turnover battle finishing with just six to the Marauders 14. Trailing 35-34 at halftime against Biola University, U-Mary was dominant in the second half cruising to 76-56. U-Mary outscored Biola 42-21 in the second half. The Marauders struggled to take care of the ball in the first half with 12 turnovers, but settled down in the second as they finished with 16. U-Mary was able to force 17 turnovers, including eight steals. The Marauders dominated inside holding a 45-30 advantage on the glass and outscoring the Eagles 38-14 from the paint.

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON  - Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn.) averaged 17 points and eight rebounds as the Golden Eagles opened up the 2013-14 season with a pair of victories over Valley City State University and William Penn University. Moenkedick had a dominating performance against the Vikings Tuesday as she had 20 points and eight rebounds and shot 6-of-8 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe in a 63-48 win over Valley City State. Friday, Moenkedick had 14 points and seven rebounds as the Golden Eagles took over in the second half and dominated the Statesmen 91-63. Moenkedick shot 6-of-15 from the field in Friday’s win.

MINNESOTA DULUTH  - UMD put up offensive numbers in their first two games at the season-opening Missouri S&T, but settled for a split, defeating the host Miners before falling to Pitt State in a rare Saturday morning match-up. Five Bulldogs hit double-figures scoring in game one, and UMD continued to spread the ball around with four in the next game. Senior center Hannah Rutten had a double-double in game one with 16 points and 12 boards and followed it up with an 18-point, seven-rebound showing in game two. Rutten had four steals, a pair of blocks, and an assist on the weekend

MINNESOTA STATE - The Minnesota State women’s basketball team returned to its winning ways as it defeated Buena Vista 119-57, posting the second-most points in program history, while establishing the largest margin of victory. In the win, the Mavericks recorded 33 assists, falling one short of the NSIC single-game helper record. Additionally, MSU is currently on a 18 game home winning streak.
Freshman guard Britney Scherber (Bloomington, Minn.) led the way, posting 20 points off of the bench, while connecting on 7-of-10 of her shots from the field, 2-of-2 from behind the arc and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe, while tallying two rebounds. On the season Scherber is averaging 16 points and connecting on 57% of her shots from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc.

MSU MOORHEAD - Morgan Zabel (F, 5-10, Sr., Northfield, Minn. / Northfield HS) posted a pair of strong performances in helping the Dragons to a perfect 2-0 mark at the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic last weekend in St. Paul, Minn. Zabel was named the tournament MVP after averaging 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Zabel had 18 points, six rebounds and two assists in a 71-68 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, and followed with a 16-point, five rebound effort in a 68-63 upset win over No. 21-ranked Michigan Tech on Saturday. Zabel shot 50 percent (12-of-24) for the week. She leads the Dragons at  19.0 points per game this season.

Minot State University used a late run to finish off NAIA nationally ranked University of Jamestown Wednesday 82-67 and led from the get-go in an 88-55 win over Presentation College Sunday. ##40 Carly Boag (F, 6-2, Sr., Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) had an outstanding game against Jamestown, scoring 29 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. She was 9 for 9 from the floor and added 22 points against PC. #24 Alisha Jones (G, 5-7, Sr., Killeen, Texas / Ellison / Temple Junior College) scored 30 points in the two games and added eight assists on the way. She hit a total of five 3-pointers in the pair of wins. #22 Katie Hardy (F, 6-0, Jr., Fairview, N.D. / Fairview) was steady on the weekend with 21 points and 12 rebounds combined in two games. MISU will play host to Dickinson State Sunday in its final nonconference game.

NORTHERN STATE - Northern State University Women’s Basketball started off the 2013-14 season on a high note going 2-0 on the weekend with wins of SD School of Mines (51-35) and Black Hills State (77-67). Rachel Krogman recorded her first double-double of the year for the Wolves in their with against the Hardrockers, pulling in 16 rebounds while scoring 15 points. Krogman would also add 11 points and five rebounds in game number two of the weekend. Senior Alison Kusler played all but five minutes of the weekend for NSU, scoring 22 points while adding eight assists and 11 rebounds. Strong play was seen across the board for the Wolves as they out-rebounded their opponents 81-59. Northern also racked up 20 points off turnovers in the win over Black Hills while only allowing nine turnovers of their own. The Wolves will open the home season Saturday (11/23) as they host Central Methodist University from Wachs Arena beginning at 2 p.m.
Paige Waytashek (G, 5-11, Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) scored a career high 24 points for the Wolves in the second game of her career with a win over Black Hills State University. Waytashek totaled 58 minutes on the weekend scoring a total of 27 points. She shot 8-16 from the floor dropping seven 3 ptrs. in the match-up with the yellow Jackets. In addition to her scoring prowess, Waytashek added one rebound and four assists in the Wolves two wins on the weekend.

SIOUX FALLS -  The University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team opened up the 2013-14 season with a three-point victory over the College of Saint Mary on Friday. The Cougars got out to a sluggish start and did not lead in the game until Colorado State transfer Taylor Varsho (G, 5-7, So., Chili, Wisc. /Colorado State) hit a three-point shot with just over two minutes left in the first half. Varsho finished her debut in the Cougar uniform with 19 points and 7 rebounds. USF buckled down defensively in the second half as they forced 16 turnovers and held the Flames to shooting 40.7% from the field. The College of Saint Mary stayed in the game with help from behind the arc as they hit seven three-point shots in the game. After trailing by six points with just under seven minutes to play, the Cougars went on a 12-3 run thanks to two three-pointers from Bailey Bouman (F, 5-9, Sr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone Area HS) and one from Taylor Varsho giving USF a three-point victory. Laura Johnson (F, 6-0, Sr., Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) helped chip in for the Cougars as she scored 14 points and had seven rebounds. Johnson is currently 20 points away from joining the 1,000 point club. USF will take to the road this weekend as they travel to face Black Hills State and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

SMSU - Southwest Minnesota State went 1-1 this weekend in Belmont, Calif., by defeating Notre Dame de Namur 80-53 before falling to Cal State Monterey Bay 57-45 on Saturday. Allison Nagel (F, 6-3, Sr., Fort Dodge, Iowa / St. Edmond) recorded her first career double-double as the senior forward netted 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds on Saturday versus CSUMB. Nagel finished with 10 points despite finishing just 3 of 13 from the floor. Nagel finished the weekend with 22 points and 17 rebounds. SMSU will be back in action on Nov. 22 with a road game versus South Dakota Tech.

ST. CLOUD STATE - The St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team took the court at Halenbeck Hall Sunday afternoon for their first home appearance of the season. The Huskies prevailed over Valley City State (N.D.) with a final score of 91-65, pushing their record to 1-0 on the season. Both teams battled in the first half before the Huskies completed a 10-0 run in the final three minutes to secure a 41-34 lead at halftime. Senior forward Jessica Benson led the way with 19 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Lexy Petermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) went seven of 10 from the field and three of three from behind the charity stripe to finish with 18 points for the Huskies in just 17 minutes of play. Senior point guard Rachael Moen (Savage) finished with a team-high six assists. St. Cloud State shot 57% from the field and 78% from the line in today’s showing. The Huskies outrebounded the Vikings, 34-28. The Huskies will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Des Moines, IA to take on Grand View University in a 7 p.m. match-up.

UPPER IOWA - Whitney Kieffer (G, 5-9, Jr., Scales Mound, Ill.) averaged 19.7 points per game this week as Upper Iowa opened their season with a 1-2 record.  With a pair of free throws in UIU’s win over Wartburg, Kieffer became the 11th women’s basketball at Upper Iowa to join the 1,000-point club.  The Scales Mound, Ill. native is only the second junior at UIU to reach the high mark and she did it in just 58 games.  She now has 1,030 in her career.  Kieffer shot 45.2% from the floor and added 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.3 assists per game.
The Peacocks lost to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 65-55, on Monday night to open the season after being outscored by ten over the final ten minutes of the contest.  UIU’s win came on Friday night at home versus Wartburg, 65-56, when the Peacocks rallied from a 9-point deficit at halftime to win by 9.  Sunday afternoon in Fayette, the Peacocks came up just short in a 73-68 decision to #18 Lewis University.
In addition to Kieffer’s big week, Lauren Buck averaged 8 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Thrapp netted 10 points and 3 assists per game.  Carly Pagel added 7.7 points and 5 rebounds per game off the bench.
This week, UIU will travel to Liberty, Mo. for their final non-conference game at William Jewell College on Saturday, Nov. 23.

WAYNE STATE - Jordan Spencer (F, 5-11, Jr., Millard West HS) averaged 18.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while helping Wayne State post road wins at Chadron State and South Dakota School of Mines over the weekend.  Spencer had 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting Thursday night in a 78-59 win at Chadron State and followed that with 19 points and seven rebounds Saturday in a 77-42 win at South Dakota School of Mines.  For the weekend, Spencer shot 53.3 percent from the field (16 of 30) helping the Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the young season.

WINONA STATE -  Abby Busch, F, Sr., 5-10, Fairfax, Minn. (G-F-W) scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds in WSU’s win over Wisconsin-La Crosse last week. Busch topped the 20 point mark for the second consecutive game, going 8-of-13 from the floor while also making five of seven shots from the free throw line. The senior also passed out four assists while recording one steal.
