No. 21 Augustana bound for NCAA Championships

No. 21 Augustana will make its fifth-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the Persimmon Ridge Country Club in Louisville, Ky.

NCAA Championships
The NCAA Championships is a four-round tournament featuring the top-three teams from each regional and the top-three individuals not with an advancing team.  A total of 72 participants make up of the field.  The Championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently.  All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition.  In the team competition, the low-four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score.  Bellarmine is this year’s host.

Last time out
Augustana turned in a tournament-low round of 309 last Tuesday to win the Central Region Championship with a three-round score of 955 at the Sierra Del Rio Golf Course in Elephant Butte, N.M.  The Vikings were in third after the first round, moved into second after the second 18 and took the lead during the final round.  Peggy Kirby's team finished 12 strokes ahead of Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks held a 10-shot lead over Augustana after the opening round.  Maggie Leland was the top finisher from Augustana; she carded a 17-over par 233.  Jennifer Benoy took fifth after shooting a 21-over 237.  Allie Ostrander, who won last year's region tournament, placed sixth with a 23-over 239.  Emily Kvidera tied for 13th with a 30-over 246.  Kelsey Bortnem took 43rd at 56-over 272.

Three’s company
Augustana wrapped up its third-straight season with a NSIC and Central Region title.  The Vikings won the conference tournament by 54 strokes last month and took the regional by 12 shots last week.

Team Championships history
2011-12 marks the fifth-straight season Peggy Kirby’s team has qualified for the national tournament.  The program’s best finish came in 2007-08 when the Vikings placed eighth.  They finished 11th in 2008-09, 10th in 2009-10 and ninth in 2010-11.  All of Augustana’s appearances the NCAA Championships have come under the guidance of Kirby.

Individual Championships history
Junior Emily Kvidera’s rookie campaign in 2009-10 provided the best individual finish at the national tournament by a Viking.  Kvidera fired an 18-over-par 302 at the Longbow Golf Couse in Mesa, Ariz. to tie for seventh.  A year ago, Kvidera also turned in the top performance for Augustana after carding a 13-over 301 to tie for 15th at the Meadows in Allendale, Mich.

Division II domination
Maggie Leland enters this week’s NCAA Championships with the third-best stroke average in the nation.  The sophomore has an average of 74.78, less than a half a stroke behind the country’s leaders, Courtney Soekland of Cal State-Monterey Bay and Sarah Hoffman of Grand Valley State (tied at 74.48).  Leland also leads the NSIC in stroke average by nearly four shots.

Round and round
Augustana has competed in 23 rounds this season and owns a team stroke average of 312.3.  Three players--Maggie Leland, Emily Kvidera and Allie Ostrander--have played in every round.  Jennifer Benoy has been active for 21 rounds.

Conference titles galore
Augustana has now won four NSIC titles in 2011-12, getting other championships from women's cross country, men's cross country and women's tennis.  The Vikings' NSIC championship total now sits at 18.  Augustana has won a total of 60 conference titles among the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference, North Central Conference and NSIC.

More NSIC honors
Emily Kvidera was named the conference's golfer of the week on Wednesday after winning the Augustana Spring Invitational.  Augustana has had seven NSIC Golfers of the Week in 2011-12.

Nationally ranked
Augustana is ranked 21st in the latest National Golf Coaches Association national poll.  Nova Southeastern received seven first-place votes and 342 points to retain its top spot.

We're back
Six golfers return from Augustana's 2010-11 squad. All-NSIC picks Emily Kvidera and Maggie Leland are part of the incumbent group, while Central Region medalist Allie Ostrander is also back. Other returners include Molly Leland, Jennifer Benoy and Kelsey Bortnem.

A look back
Augustana won seven tournament titles in 2010-11, including the NSIC Championship and Central Region Championship. The Vikings were ninth-place finishers at the NCAA Championship.

Coaches corner
Peggy Kirby enters her ninth season as the leader of Augustana women's golf. A three-time conference coach of the year, Kirby has coached three conference medalists and four All-America selections. She is assisted by longtime friend Patty Coddington.
