NSIC Player of the Year
#31 Ashley Arlen (F, 6-2, Sr., Cascade, Iowa / Cascade HS)
Wayne State College
Ashley Arlen led the NSIC in scoring during league games this season averaging 18.0 points per game while ranking second in rebounding at 8.8 per contest to help Wayne State win a second straight NSIC regular season title with a 20-2 league record. She shot 47.3 percent from the field (124 of 262) and 79.4 percent (123 of 155) at the free throw stripe in league games this season and had six double-doubles while scoring in double figures in all but two league games this season. Arlen was named NSIC Player of the Week three times this season, highlighted by a career-high 38 points in a 77-73 win at MSU Moorhead on February 25th. Overall this season, Arlen is averaging 18.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for the Wildcats, who are ranked second in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll. Last season as a junior, Arlen was selected the Northern Sun Conference and Daktronics Central Region Women’s Basketball Player of the Year on her way to becoming Wayne State’s first-ever All-American after she was selected WBCA/State Farm Coaches’ First Team and Daktronics Second Team All-American.
Note: NSIC Player of the Year was first award in 1993-94 season.
NSIC Defensive Player of the Year
#22 Shelly Stemper (F, 6-0, Sr., Becker, Minn. Becker HS)
University of Minnesota Duluth
During her final season in maroon and gold, Shelly Stemper has successfully the transition from mostly being a defensive minded player to proving she has what it takes to be a strong offensive contributor as well. The defensive ability from the Becker, Minn., native has been unquestioned since her first days as a Bulldog. Stemper was rewarded with a selection to the 2010-11 NSIC All-Defensive Team, and has done nothing but back up that citation in the following season. Stemper has helped the Bulldogs evolve into one of the most feared defensive clubs in the 14-team NSIC as UMD allows only 58.3 points per game to the opposition this season. Stemper also leads the Bulldogs in steals with 1.83 per game - a mark that also has her sitting in sixth in the league in that category. This season has also seen the forward reset her career-high with a 23-point performance in a 76-70 overtime victory against Winona State. Stemper has been equally deadly from the free throw stripe, converting on 78.9 percent of her chances at the foul line in 2011-12.
NSIC Defensive Player of the Year was first awarded in 2000-01 season.
NSIC Freshman of the Year
#3 Shaunteva Ashley (G, 5-7, Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D. / Roosevelt HS)
Augustana College
Shaunteva Ashley, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., is Augustana’s leading scorer off the bench, averaging 10.0 points per game. She is second on the team in field-goal percentage, shooting 48.6 percent. Ashley is averaging 3.7 rebounds per game. She has 34 steals and has handed out 64 assists as the Vikings finished second in the NSIC standings.
Note: NSIC Freshman of the Year was first award in 1993-94 season.
NSIC Coach of the Year
Chris Kielsmeier
Wayne State College
Chris Kielsmeier guided Wayne State College to a second straight NSIC regular season title this season by posting a 20-2 league record after the ‘Cats set a NSIC record last season with a 21-1 league mark. It’s the second time in three years that Kielsmeier has received NSIC Coach of the Year honors. Under Kielsmeier, the Wildcats have not lost a home game in three seasons, winning 43 straight games at Rice Auditorium. In his four seasons at Wayne State, Kielsmeier has led the Wildcats to a 94-24 record, including 69-15 in the NSIC, with two straight trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament and a likely third straight coming this season. This season, the Wildcats are shooting a school-record 45.6 percent from the field (10th in NCAA Division) and a school-record 40.9 percent from the three point line, which leads NCAA Division II. Kielsmeier’s Wildcats are 27-2 on the season and ranked second in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, the highest ever national ranking for a Wildcat women’s basketball program. The 27 wins also ties the school record (27-4 in 2005-06) for wins in a single season.
Note: NSIC Coach of the Year was first award in 1988-89 season.
