Taylor Nagel was one of several Marauders grapplers that had a tremendous day at the University of Central Missouri Dual Jamboree on Sunday. Nagel dominated all three of his foes at 165, recording two major decisions and pinning his third opponent. Nagel started the day with a 13-4 win over Tyler Graham of Ouachita Baptist. He then pinned Alex Prine of Newman at 2:30 and finished the day with a major decision over Todd Brier of Central Missouri, 10-2. Four Marauders picked up three wins on the mat as U-Mary defeated Ouachita Baptist 26-15, beat Newman 30-10, and destroyed Central Missouri 48-3.
NSIC Wrestling Notes
Out of the ten weight classes, the NSIC has five wrestlers ranked No.1 in the nation at their respective weights. The NSIC also has a wrestler ranked in the top four in each of the other five weight classes. (see page 4 of PDF release for full individual national rankings.
AUGUSTANA COLLEGE
Jason Jeremiason (133, Sr., Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) pinned U-Mary’s Kyle Larson in four minutes last Friday, helping No. 5 Augustana to a 31-3 victory over the Marauders in their NSIC opener. It was Jeremiason’s second win by fall this season. The senior, who is 11-0 this season, is ranked No. 2 in the nation.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY

At 149, Tanner Beaman (Jr., Lakeside, MT) pinned his opponents in two of his three wins… Brady Anderson (Jr., Hamilton, MT) earned one major decision among his three wins at 184. Among Anderson’s victories was a 4-3 victory over Dallas Smith of Ouachita Baptist, who is ranked fifth in the nation… Kriss McCleary (Jr., Napoleon, ND) picked up one of his three victories at 197 with a pin... Ranked fourth in the nation at 141, Trevor Johnson (So., Bismarck, ND) claimed two wins at 141 and earned a forfeit win to close the jamboree. One of his victories was a 9-1 major decision over Ouachita’s John Myers, ranked eighth in the nation.
MINNESOTA STATE
Tel Todd (157lbs, Sr., Bozeman, Mont.) went 3-0 at the Ranger Duals hosted by UW-Parkside over the weekend. Todd opened the day with a 6-1 decision victory over Daniel Genetin (Ashland)...The senior went on to pin Bryce Givens (Indianapolis) at 7:19...Todd closed the book on his perfect day at 157-lb by defeating Alex Betts (Findlay) in a 5-2 decision...Todd now stands at 22-8 on the year.
No. 17 Minnesota State traveled to Kenosha, Wis. to compete in the Ranger Duals...The Maverick went 0-3 on the day...MSU opened the day with a 23-13 loss to No. 18 Ashland...MSU then fell to Indianapolis 27-18...MSU closed the day with a 27-6 loss to No. 16 Findlay...MSU will open conference dual action Thursday January 26 as they travel to Upper Iowa.
MSU MOORHEAD
The Dragon’s Corey Ulmer, second ranked in the NCAA Division II 125-weight class, went 2-0 for the Dragons last week. He picked up the Dragons only win in a 38-3 loss to Augsburg. He defeated Mike Fuenffinger 10-6. Then against #1 St. Cloud State, Ulmer defeated Dylan Wright 7-4.
NORTHERN STATE
The Wolves were idle last week. They will return to the mat on January 27th against SMSU.
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Andrew Rodas (184, So., Farmersburg, Iowa) improved to 8-7 on the season with an upset victory over Upper Iowa’s Mitch Schultz, who is 19-4 on the season and ranked fourth in the country at 184 pounds. Rodas earned five nearfall points in the match en route to a 10-3 decision. The sophomore has now won six out of his last eight bouts, including two straight wins. SMSU lost 28-9 to the Peacocks in the dual.
ST. CLOUD STATE
Derek Skala (184lbs, Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) charted two victories this weekend for the Huskies at 184-pounds. The nation’s number three ranked wrestler at 184-pounds, Skala opened the weekend on Jan. 20 with a 15-5 major decision over Zach Deffinbaugh at Concordia-Moorhead. The victory helped the Huskies secure a 33-6 win over the Cobbers in Moorhead. To finish the weekend, Skala earned his second major decision in two days with a 15-0 win over Kody Kalkbrenner at MSU Moorhead. The Huskies went on to defeat the Dragons 37-9 in the NSIC dual. On the season, Skala now owns an 18-2 overall record. The Huskies are currently ranked #1 in the nation among NCAA Division II teams with a perfect 16-0 dual record, which includes a 3-0 mark against NSIC squads.
The Huskies are ranked #1 in the nation at the Division II level and own a 16-0 dual match record this winter. SCSU has won 21 consecutive dual matches dating back to an 18-13 loss at Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011. The Huskies will once again meet up with the Vikings in an important NSIC dual match this weekend with a 7 p.m. dual at Halenbeck Hall on Friday, Jan. 27…#1 ranked Tad Merritt added two pins this weekend for the Huskies, which moves his season record to 25-2 in 2011-12. He also has 14 pins this season, while freshman Josh Howk (149) leads the team with 15 pins in 2011-12. Merritt owns the current Husky season record with 17 pins set in 2008-09. Of note, Howk now owns a 20-11 record this season…#1 ranked Jacob Kahnke added two more wins for SCSU at 285-pounds last weekend. His season record now stands at 24-1…SCSU will host Southwest Minnesota State on Jan. 28 in a dual match in Canby, Minn. The match will be held at the Canby H.S. Gymnasium, which is the same locale where SCSU wrestler Tad Merritt wrestled as a prep athlete…make plans now to attend the big NCAA Division II Super Region 3 tournament on Feb. 26 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud.
UPPER IOWA
The Peacocks remained undefeated in NSIC duals this season (3-0) with a 28-9 defense of Dorman Gym versus the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday. UIU won seven matches including one by fall, one by major decision and one by forfeit in front of a massive crowd in Fayette. With the victory, Upper Iowa improves to 7-1 overall in duals this season. Winners included Kyle Pedretti (125, #1 NCAA) by forfeit, Trevor Franklin (133, #1 NCAA) by major decision 12-4, Jordan Rinken (149) by decision 11-7, Winston Robbins (157) by fall (:43), Wade Gobin (174, #6 NCAA) by decision 6-3, Carl Broghammer (197, #4 NCAA) by decision 9-3, and Luke Stika (285) by sudden victory 3-1. Sunday’s dual was the first of four straight home NSIC duals for the Peacocks. Upper Iowa will return to Dorman Gym next Thursday night, Jan. 26, for a 7 p.m. start with the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato. The dual will be a matchup of top twenty powers.
