Angie Jetvig led the NSIC in scoring and rebounding this past weekend as she averaged 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as she helped lead the Dragons to a pair of road victories over Concordia St. Paul and St. Cloud State. Jetvig scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to go along with three assists and three blocked shots in Friday’s win at Concordia St. Paul. She then broke out for a 31 point performance Saturday at St. Cloud State. She added 11 rebounds, five assists and two block shots in that game as well. Her 31 points were a career high and is the highest point total in a NSIC contest this season.
NSIC Women's Basketball Notes
AUGUSTANA COLLEGE - Shaunteva Ashley (G, 5-8, RFr., Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt HS) lifted Augustana to its eighth-straight win Saturday, making a layup with three seconds remaining to break the Vikings away from a 55-55 tie to beat Winona State 57-55. Ashley finished the game with seven points and tallied a game-high three assists. She was one of four Vikings in double-figure scoring last Friday night, helping Augustana defeat Upper Iowa 97-65. Ashley netted 17 points and had three steals in the game. For the weekend, she went 8 of 8 from the free throw line and shot 41.2 percent from the field. Other totals for Ashley include eight assists and eight rebounds.
BEMIDJI STATE - Morgan Lee (G, So., 5-7, Hayward, Wis. / Hayward HS) averaged 20.5 points per game and posted a 51.9 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from 3-point land, guiding the Bemidji State women’s basketball team to a 2-0 NSIC home weekend. She posted back-to-back 20 point performances for the first time in her career. Lee scored 21 points, shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from the field, 50 percent (5-for-10) from beyond the arc and added three steals in the 72-71 victory against Minnesota State Friday. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Beavers, while ending an eight-game win streak for the Mavericks. She scored 20 points in the 77-54 win against Southwest Minnesota State Saturday, shooting 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from the field, 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from downtown, 4-for-4 from the line and added two steals. On the weekend she averaged 34.5 minutes per game and added three assists and three rebounds. In the win against Minnesota State she established career-highs for 3-pointers made (5) and 3-pointers attempted (10), white tying career-marks in field goals made (8) and steals (3). She now leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game.
CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - The Golden Bears went 1-1 this past weekend falling to MSU Moorhead 77-65 on Friday and then picking up a one point victory over Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday 67-66. Tierra Bender led the team in scoring on Friday with 12 points. On Saturday it was Carissa Wolyniec who led the way with 16 points, her three point play with 4.3 seconds left in the game gave Concordia the win. Many Poke and Rachel Hansen each averaged 10 points per game this weekend which tied the team lead. Concordia will try to avenge a pair of losses this weekend as they travel to Wayne State and Augustana.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Kaitlyn Haag (F, 6-1, So., Hudson, WI) posted another dynamic game off the bench, recording her second double double of the season in a 73-71 road win at Northern State. Haag scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead U-Mary in both categories. She scored six of the Marauders last 10 points, including back-to-back baskets that gave U-Mary the lead for good. Haag, who has led the Marauders in scoring three straight games and has nine straight double figure games, also registered three steals… Kayla Schmidt (G, 5-9, Sr., Beulah, ND) hit five treys in seven chances and scored 15 points in the win over her former team. She also pulled down seven rebounds and played all 40 minutes. Ali Collins (G, 5-9, Mandan, ND) had another tremendous all-around night, scoring 15 points, grabbing six boards, dished five assists and made two steals.
MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON - The Golden Eagles had a tough weekend going 0-2 against St. Cloud State and Concordia- St. Paul. Minnesota, Crookston was led by Megan Eul (F, 5-10, Sr. Rosemount Minn.). Eul scored a team high 18 points against St. Cloud and added a scored a game-high 19 points against Concordia- St. Paul. She was 13-29 (44.8%) from the field and 9-11 (81.8%) from the free-throw line. She was second on the team with 15 rebounds and led the team with six steals. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on Saturday, January 28 to host conference rival MSU Moorhead. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
MINNESOTA DULUTH - While it wasn’t pretty it times, Minnesota Duluth scored their first home NSIC weekend sweep of the 2011-12 campaign this past weekend thanks in large part to the play of Courtney Doucette. The junior tailled a game-high 14 points in the Bulldogs’ 58-54 victory against Southwest Minnesota State on Friday (Jan. 20) night, also adding a pair of assists, a rebound and one steal. While the Colfax, Wis., native saw a marginal drop in her point totals against Minnesota State the following night, she made her presence known on both ends of the floor in a nail biting 56-54 UMD win. The 5-8 Doucette posted a great all-around game with a team-high 12 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. She dished out the game-winning assist on a Shelly Stemper layup in the final minute before snatching the game-clinching steal on the defensive end of the floor just seconds later. Doucette averaged 13 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals during the pair of triumphs.
MINNESOTA STATE - Minnesota State (12-5, 8-5 NSIC) went 0-2 this week, suffering its first loss since Dec. 9...The Mavericks lost 72-71 Friday night against Bemidji State which snapped the team’s eight-game win streak...The following night, MSU dropped its second-consecutive game with a 56-54 defeat to Minnesota Duluth...Four Mavericks averaged double-digits over the weekend as freshman forward Jamie Bresnahan paced the team with 12.5 points per game...SHe shot 47.8 percent from the field while also pulling down 4.0 rebounds per contest...Senior forward Laura Weber scored 12.0 points per game while grabbing a team-best 7.0 rebounds per contest...Senior guard Jennie Noreen tallied 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while leading the Mavericks with five three pointers made (5-12, 41.7 3FG%)...The fourth and final Maverick averaging mroe than ten points was freshman guard Aubrey Davis who contributed 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.

NORTHERN STATE - Mikayla Barondeau (F, 6-1, Sr, Frederick, S.D. / Frederick-Leola HS) had her best weekend of the season as the senior nearly averaged a double-double with 12.5 points a game and 9.5 rebounds per game to go along with 3.5 assists per contest. In the victory over future NSIC foe Minot State, Barondeau tied a season high of 13 points while snagging eight rebounds. In the loss to U-Mary, Barondeau scored 12 points while picking up 11 boards, her second double-double of the season. Barondeau also hit 53.8 percent of her shots on the week while going fifty percent from long range (3-6) and posting just one turnover.
SMSU - #14 Bree Holleman (G, 5-8, So., Hancock, Minn.) averaged 11 points per game for the Mustangs over the weekend connecting on 6 of 13 shots from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. The sophomore was 5 of 5 from the free throw line and finished with six rebounds, three assists and a steal in SMSU’s two losses. Holleman led the Mustangs with 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting in a 58-54 loss to Minnesota Duluth on Friday night.
ST. CLOUD STATE - St. Cloud State extended its win streak to three in a row with a 75-67 win over Minnesota, Crookston on Friday and saw the streak end in an 82-71 loss to MSU Moorhead on Saturday. Jessica Benson (FY, F, Grand Meadow, Minn.) averaged 17.5 points and five rebounds in the weekend split. She tied her season high with 19 points against Minnesota, Crookston and came back with a 16 point performance against MSU Moorhead. Benson shot 66.7 percent from the field (14-21) and made four of seven three-point baskets (57.1 percent). She averaged five rebounds.
Rachael Moen (So., G, Savage, Minn.) equaled her season and career high with 14 points against Minnesota, Crookston. Moen made all six free throw attempts in the final :50 seconds of the win. Sam Price (So., G, Eau Claire, Wis.) scored a team high 18 points against MSU Moorhead with ten points coming in the final ten minutes of the game.
St. Cloud State is on the road to Wayne State and Augustana this weekend. The Huskies are 5-2 in NSIC road games this season.
UPPER IOWA - Upper Iowa lost a pair of home games against the two teams tied at the top of the NSIC standings over the weekend. The Peacocks dropped a 97-65 decision to Augustana on Friday before giving the #10 Wildcats all they could handle for most of the game, but falling short 76-62. UIU was led by Whitney Kieffer over the weekend; the freshman averaged 21 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Kieffer scored 27 against the Vikings of Friday night. Jeri Jacobson averaged 14 points over the weekend thanks to her 23 point outburst against Wayne State, while Lyndsay Westgaard averaged 9.5 points off the bench and tallied 5 assists against the Wildcats on Saturday. Upper Iowa will be in Dorman Gym this coming weekend, Jan. 27 and 28, to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University and the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. both nights.
WAYNE STATE - Ashley Arlen (F, 6-2, Sr., Cascade, Iowa) averaged 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 blocks per game in Wildcat road wins at Winona State and Upper Iowa. She notched her eighth double-double of the season Friday night with 21 points and 16 rebounds in a 70-64 OT win over the Warriors and followed that with 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven assists in a 76-62 win at Upper Iowa on Saturday. For the weekend, Arlen was 14 of 33 from the field and 5 of 9 at the foul stripe.
WINONA STATE - Michelle McDonald (C, 6-0, Sr., Johnsburg, Ill. / Johnsburg HS) averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as Winona State came up just short in a pair of games against Wayne State and Augustana. McDonald opened the weekend with 22 points and 6 boards in an overtime loss to Wayne State. She followed with 13 points and three rebounds against Augustana. She also added three assists and a pair of steals.
