Winona State Selected as Preseason Favorite in Soccer Coaches’ Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – For the second consecutive season and tenth time since 2000 Winona State University was picked by the league’s coaches to win the NSIC in the preseason poll. The Warrior’s Jennifer Deroo was tabbed as the NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while teammate Anna Belpedio was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Winona State is coming off their seventh straight NSIC Regular Season Championship and a NSIC Tournament Championship.

The Warriors received 12 first place votes and tallied 168 points, ranking them 22 points ahead of Minnesota Duluth (146) who received one first place vote of their own. Minnesota State was ranked third by the coaches as they picked up the other first place pick to totaled 141 points.

Augustana came in fourth in the poll with 122 points while U-Mary rounded out the top five with 115 points.

NSIC Offensive Preseason Player of the Year

Winona State University

Jennifer Deroo, the 2010 NSIC Newcomer of the Year, was selected by the league coaches as the 2011 NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Deroo recorded one of the top freshman seasons in Winona State history as she scored 11 goals, five of which were game winners, while also handing out five assists. She was named a Second Team All-Region honoree and had three multi goal games. Her best performance was a three-goal, one assist performance against MSU Moorhead. Deroo was named NSIC Player of the Week twice last season and was also named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team and Second Team All-NSIC.

Anna Belpedio had one of the best seasons in Winona State history in 2010, culminating in First Team All-American honors by the NSCAA. She also earned Honorable Mention All-American honors by Daktronics, was NSIC Defensive Player of the Year and named MVP of the NSIC Tournament. She earned First Team All-NSIC honors after allowing just 14 goals in 2098 minutes. She posted a 17-4-1 record with 11 shutouts, including a seven game shutout streak. She set a school record with 116 saves as she ranks third all-time on the WSU charts with 0.66 goals allowed per game.
