Jayd Docken was the 184-pound champion in the Red Division at Saturday’s MSU Moorhead Open. Docken went 4-0 en route to this title. He pinned Regina’s Regan Pratt in his opening match and followed it by beating Augsburg’s Josh Vaughan in a 14-1 major decision. After beating Kody Sorenson of North Dakota State 5-3, Docken capped his performance with a 7-3 win over teammate Sean Derry in the championship match.

AUGUSTANA COLLEGE
Jayd Docken (184, RFr., Winner, S.D./Winner HS) was the 184-pound champion in the Red Division at Saturday’s MSU Moorhead Open. Docken went 4-0 en route to this title. He pinned Regina’s Regan Pratt in his opening match and followed it by beating Augsburg’s Josh Vaughan in a 14-1 major decision. After beating Sorenson of North Dakota State 5-3, Docken capped his performance with a 7-3 win over teammate Sean Derry in the championship match.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY
Trevor Johnson (141, Soph., Bismarck, ND / Bismarck/North Dakota State) captured his weight class for the second straight open meet and was one of six Marauders to place at the 2011 Dragon Open on Saturday. Johnson won all four of his matches in the Red Division (upper class) at 141 pounds. The sophomore opened with a 17-1 win by technical fall over Timothy Ruter of Concordia College and defeated Devin Terry (Unattached – Southwest Minnesota State) 9-4 in the second round. Johnson pinned Jake Saatzer of Augsburg 2:11 into the match to move into the title match. Johnson would outlast Augsburg Will Keeter 4-2 in overtime to claim the title. Collin Engelhardt placed second and Brock Krumm sixth at 157, Brady Anderson (197) took third, Martin Patron (285) fifth and Hunter Menendez (125) placed sixth, all in the Red Division.
MINNESOTA STATE
The Mavericks were idle last week, their next competition is set for Dec. 10 at the SCSU Husky Open.
MSU MOORHEAD
All-American Corey Ulmer earned his second consecutive championship in the 125 class of the Dragon Open. Ulmer has improved his finishes during the past three tournaments by finishing third in the Bison Open and second in the Cobber Open before finishing first in the Dragon Open. The Wishek native earned the first win of the tournament against Justin Valhuerdi of Itasca Community College. Ulmer took down Valhuerdi in the form of a pin in 1 minute and 18 seconds. Ulmer then advanced past the second round after earning an 8-0 major decision against cross-town rival Phil Levine of North Dakota State University. The semi-final provided another major decision for Ulmer as he defeated Lonny Booshu of Ridgewater College, 14-0. To win the 125 championship, Ulmer took down Bryden Lazaro of Dickinson State in a 5-2 decision.
NORTHERN STATE
Anthony Bruno (125 pounds, R-Fr., Madison, Ala., Bob Jones HS) was one of five wrestlers to win both dual matches of the week for the Wolves. Bruno kicked off the parade of wins with a second-period pin of Dakota Wesleyan’s Zach Nelson at home on Wednesday. Bruno was leading Nelson 4-1 at the time of the pin. The win by fall was one of four pins by NSU wrestlers in the 39-12 win over the Tigers. Bruno, a redshirt freshman, came back with an 8-1 victory over Chadron State’s Connor Larson on Saturday in Chadron. That win helped the Wolves to a 19-18 team victory over the Eagles.
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Jake Begin (165, So., Anoka, Minn.) improved to 11-2 on the season after picking up a 13-0 major decision over Collin Jorgenson in SMSU’s 32-9 season-opening dual win over St. Olaf last Wednesday. Begin continued his success at the Dragon Open last weekend going 2-1 finishing in second place in the 165-pound bracket. He started off the day with an 8-4 decision over Matt Morris of Augustana and continued with a 14-2 major decision over Josten Coleman of Concordia-Moorhead. In three open tournaments, Begin has earned two runner-up honors and one championship this season. SMSU continues dual action on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Morningside (Iowa) beginning at 7 p.m.
ST. CLOUD STATE
Josh Howk (149 lbs, R-Fr., Oak Grove, Mo. / Blue Springs HS) posted a perfect 3-0 record in action at the 2011 Candlewood Suites UW-LaCrosse Duals on Dec. 3, in LaCrosse, Wis. Howk had two falls in the three matches and the victories improved his season mark to 13-5 in 2011-12. He also has 10 falls so far this season and is on track to make a run at breaking the team fall record of 17 set by Tad Merritt in 2008-09. To open the day on Dec. 3, Howk charted a 1:15 pin over Emmanuel Del Castillo of Waldorf. In action against Shane Sweeney of UW-Stevens Point, Howk added a 9-6 decision win. To finish the day, Howk charted a 1:24 pin against Bobby Dorn of UW-LaCrosse. Of note, UW-Stevens Point is ranked #25 in the latest DIII polls and UW-LaCrosse is ranked #2 in the latest DIII poll this season. Howk is a redshirt freshman from Oak Grove, Missouri.
The Huskies opened their 2011-12 dual match season with a trio of wins at the UW-LaCrosse Duals on Dec. 3. SCSU gained a 49-0 win over Waldorf College to open the day. In the second match of the day, SCSU posted a 29-9 win over #25 UW-Stevens Points and then completed the afternoon with a 29-7 win over host and #2 ranked UW-LaCrosse. SCSU is now 3-0 on the season, and the Huskies were ranked #1 in the nation in both the Division II and NSIC preseason polls this year…Jacob Kahnke (285) and Dan Dick (165) also earned 3-0 records in action at the UW-LaCrosse Duals this weekend. Kahnke owns a 10-1 record this season for the Huskies, while Dick is 10-4. Howk is tops on the team with 13 wins at 13-5 this winter…the Huskies will host the annual Holiday Inn Husky Open on Dec. 10. This tournament will begin in Halenbeck Hall at 9 a.m. and it will feature many of the nation’s top collegiate wrestlers in an open format tournament. Last year, more than 200 athletes competed in the tournament and over 12 teams have indicated they intend to have athletes participate in the tournament this year. Tickets for this tournament can be purchased at the gate on Dec. 10.
UPPER IOWA
The #3 Peacocks opened their home schedule with a dual in Dorman Gym this evening against the Warriors of Waldorf College. After the Warriors picked up wins at 125, 157, 165 and 174 pounds to take a 13-12 lead, Upper Iowa put their hopes on the sturdy backs of their upper weights and the veteran crew of wrestlers responded with three pins to push the final margin to seventeen points, 30-13.
Mitch Schultz used a throw to put Steven DelGado on his back and record a pin just 17 seconds into the match. Not to be outdone, Carl Broghammer followed with a win by fall over Brock Binversie 2:17 into the first period and Zach Rosol closed out the night with a pin in the second period (3:44) against Jacob Combs.
The Peacocks will now head west to the University of Northern Iowa this Satruday for the UNI Open before heading out to Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic on December 18-19.
