All NSIC Golfers Competing at NCAA Championships

Findlay, OH - The Upper Iowa women's golf team finished their first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships on Saturday with a 331 as the tournament was completed under chilly and breezy conditions in northwest Ohio. Upper Iowa was one of three Northern Sun Conference teams at the Championships. UIU's 331 was good enough to hold on to 8th place for the Peacocks, who finished with a 1303 over 72-holes. Concordia-St. Paul and Augustana were the other two Northern Sun teams; the Golden Bears tied for 9th and the Vikings placed 11th.

The Peacocks were led by Rachael Schmidt, who was making her fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships. Rachael finished the 2009 Championships in a tie for 15th place after turning in a four-round total of 313 (80-78-77-78). She has competed in 15 rounds at the NCAA Championships in her four-year career. Her best finish came as a freshman when she tied for 10th. After finishing 32nd as a sophomore, Rachael has tied for 15th in each of the last two years.

Saturday's round not only saw the completion of Rachael Schmidt's collegiate career, but her sister's storied career also came to a close at Findlay Country Club. Rochelle Schmidt, perhaps the driving force behind Upper Iowa earning its first-ever invitation to the Championships as a team, completed her collegiate career just minutes before her sister. Rochelle had a phenomenal spring and entered the Championships at her peak. She claimed the Northern Sun Conference Individual Medalist honors and was named the NSIC Women's Golfer of the Year and then added a NCAA Super Regional 3 medalist honor as well after going just five-over par over the 54-hole tournament. At the Championships this week, Rochelle tied for 35th with a 323 (80-79-82-82)

Upper Iowa has a number of talented golfers returning next year. Three of those Peacocks completed their first run at the national level this afternoon as well. Sophomore Jill Preeshl placed 49th and turned in a 334 (82-87-79-86) for her 72 holes to finish third among the UIU golfers. Freshman McKenzie Holthaus placed 66th and finished with a 346 (79-90-91-86), while junior Laura Taylor tied for 67th just a stroke behind at 347 (93-85-84-85).

Nova Southeastern University took the team title with a four-day total of 1230, while Lyndsay McBride, of the University of Indianapolis, claimed the medalist honors at the Championships with a ten-over par 298 (74-75-72-77).

Concordia University's women's golf team finished in a tie for ninth place at the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, completing the title event with 18 holes played on Saturday.  The Golden Bears tied West Texas A&M with 1,318 strokes through the four rounds of play.  The team was paced by Anne Martin with a 30th place finish (319), while Jacquelyn Hauser golfed a team best 82 in the fourth and final round (t-39, 324).

The Golden Bears slipped only slightly in the final round of play, dropping from a tie with Upper Iowa for eighth place to their final seating at ninth place.  The team averaged 14.5 strokes over par on the day, led by Hauser's +10 performance (82).  Hauser finished the day's back nine by hitting par on six of the nine holes.  She went +36 overall with scores of 76, 81, 85 and 82.

Martin used a strong cushion from the first three rounds of play to balance a +16 score in the fourth round.  She was the Golden Bear standout on the Championship event, averaging a score of five over par through the first three rounds.  She became tripped up from the outset of the final round, however, going +5 in the first three holes.  Martin came back to par a stretch of five of six holes and completed the day with a score of 88.  She took 30th place with a final score of 319 (77, 75, 79, 88).

Kaytie Spangler took 53rd place with a final score of 338 (+50), dropping after a tough final round with a score of 91.  Her weekend marks were 80, 82, 85 and 91.  Molly Noser remained consistent in the fourth round, marking a +13 before finishing her Championship trip tied for 54th place.  She had a final score of 339, golfing rounds of 82, 87, 85, and 85.

Nova Southeastern University is the 2009 NCAA Division II Champion, downing their nearest competition by 15 strokes to live up to their #1 national ranking.  Nova went +78 overall (1,230), with each player averaging just under a +5 per round.  The overall leader and the 2009 leader at the Championships was Lyndsay McBride of the University of Indianapolis.  McBride had a final score of 298, just ten strokes over par in the combined four rounds.

The Augustana women’s golf team finished in 11th place at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships at the Findlay Country Club which concluded Saturday in Finday, Ohio.

Making its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships, Augustana finished the 72-hole tournament with a final round score of 344 to finish with a 4-day total of 1354. Nova Southeastern won the team national title by shooting its second-straight 307 on Saturday en route to a final score of 1230. Grand Valley State was second at 1245 while Indianapolis and Rollins tied for third at 1248.

In the individual race, Lyndsay McBride of Indianapolis won the national championship with a 72-hole total of 298. Sandra Changkiga of Nova Southeastern and Charlene Reid of Pfeiffer tied for second 2 shots behind McBride at 300.

For Augustana, the Vikings all finished with 11 strokes of one another. Kate Tobin was the top Viking finisher in a tie for 51st place at 337 after shooting an 89 on Saturday. Kaari Espeland finished 2 shots behind Tobin in a tie for 54th place at 339 following Saturday's round of 88. Kelly Lauer had the best round of the day for Augustana as she carded an 82 on Saturday to tie for 60th place. Meanwhile, Kelli Lowry tied for 67th place at 347 and Laura Strautz tied for 70th place at 348.

PhotoBrookings, S.D. - Concordia University defeated two-time defending NSIC Champion Upper Iowa by one stroke in the four round, 72 hole NSIC Championship that was concluded this afternoon at Brookings Country Club. Four Golden Bears finished in the top-11 in an impressive display of team balance for the new league champs. Sophomore Molly Noser (Rochester, Minn.) finished in a three way tie for third place, shooting +30 in the four rounds. Upper Iowa's Rochelle Schmidt (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) won the individual medalist honors after shooting a four round total +19 (307) for the Championship to win by nine strokes.

It was Concordia's consistency that came through in the end as they shot a 313 in each of the final two rounds of play to hold off an Upper Iowa team that shot poorly in the second round during the fall portion of the championships.

The Golden Bears never put themselves in a hole, and proved that consistent golf leads to championships.

Concordia trailed by a stroke after the first 18 holes in the fall season, shooting a 322 while UIU and Winona State each shot a 321.

But the second round is where CU was able to shine, shooting a 329 to lead the field while opening up a 19 stroke lead on UIU and a narrower seven stroke edge over WSU.

WSU shot in the low 320's in each of the two rounds of spring championship play, not enough to overtake CU's back-to-back 313's. Meanwhile, Upper Iowa charged hard after the leading Golden Bears.

UIU fired a 303 and a 305, but the Peacocks fell short in the end, finishing a stroke back of Concordia for the championship.

Upper Iowa did feature the medalist, Rochelle Schmidt, who fired scores under 80 in all four rounds including back-to-back 75's in the final 36 holes. She finished with a 307, +19 over par. Winona State's Courtney Sovereign came in second at +28, two strokes ahead of Noser.

Rounding out CU's leaders were seniors Jacquelyn Hauser (Caledonia, Minn.) and Carley Paulseth (Moose Lake, Minn.) who tied for sixth with a 322 (+34). Sophomore Kaytie Spangler (Ely, Minn.) finished 11th with a 327 (+39).

Concordia received a huge boost for the final two rounds as they added junior Anne Martin (Ramsey, Minn.) to their tournament lineup card. Martin is a transfer from the University of Minnesota where she competed for the Golden Gophers. At the NSIC Championships, Martin fired scores under 80 in each round as she carded a 78 and 77.

The league championship puts Concordia in a solid position to receive an NCAA Central Region Tournament selection. The tournament field will be announced early this week. With CU holding the No. 2 ranking in the most recent NCAA Central Region rankings, the Golden Bears tournament title should only solidify their position in the rankings.

Concordia women's golf is seeking their first ever team NCAA appearance.

Hauser had to fend off her own teammates to take home medalist honors, shooting a consistent 75-76=151. Hauser trailed by two strokes to teammate Anne Martin after the first round as Martin fired a 73. But Hauser’s consistency allowed her to finish seven strokes over par for the 36 hole event to lead CU to a team victory as she finished first of 46 golfers. Martin ended up in third for the event with a 153 while CU sophomore Kaytie Spangler shot a 152 to finish in 2nd, a stroke out of first and a stroke ahead of Martin in 3rd.
