May 22, 2008 | Full Release Tag

PhotoCORAL SPRINGS, Florida - The Division II All-American teams presented by the Duramed FUTURES Tour and the National Golf Coaches Association, or NGCA, have been released and one Peacock has earned a spot. Rachael Schmidt (Elk River, Minn.) was named to the Second Team.  This is the third time Schmidt has been named to the NGCA All-American team.  She earned a spot on the Honorable Mention Team both her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Schmidt finished her third NCAA Championship last week in a tie for 15th place at eighteen over par after 72 holes. The Championship's medalist was Joanna Coe of Rollins who shot a four-day total of 287 (-1). Schmidt finished five strokes away from her second NCAA All-American honor as the top 10 was capped at +13 for the tournament.

While she finished in a tie for 15th at this year's Championships, Schmidt put together her best four rounds in her extensive Championships history this year. Her 76.5 stroke average bested her All-American average two years ago by over two strokes a round. She finished tied for 10th as a freshman in 2006 to earn All-American honors by compiling a 54-hole total of 236 (78.6 average). As a sophomore, Schmidt finished 32nd in 2007 with a 72-hole total of 317 (79.2 average).

Schmidt Finishes in 15th with 76 (+4) at NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship

May 16, 2008 | Golfstats Results Tag

PhotoHouston - Rachael Schmidt (Jr./Elk River, Minn.) shot a 76 (+4) on the fourth and final day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships. The tournament was played at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. Schmidt teed off on the back nine in one of the last groups today.  Schmidt, who is playing in her third NCAA Division II Championship, moved up two more spots today.  She began the day tied for 17th after a 76 on day one and a pair of 77’s on days two and three put her fourteen strokes over par.  Schmidt finished her third Championship in a tie for 15th place at eighteen over par after 72 holes.

Schmidt began today’s round on the back nine for the third time in the Championships.  Holes ten through eighteen gave her trouble on days one and two, but she was able to reign in a 38 to open round three and duplicated that number today in round four.  Schmidt parred holes ten and eleven to open her day before bogeying number twelve.  The junior did not let the extra stroke faze her as she sandwiched a par between birdies on the par-five thirteenth and the par-three fifteenth holes.  Schmidt wrapped up her first nine holes with three straight bogeys to move to +2 on the day.

The Elk River-native got into trouble right away on the front nine as she took a double bogey on the par-five first and a bogey on the par-three second.  After eleven holes, Schmidt stood at +5 on the day.  After a par, Schmidt birdied the par-four fourth hole and followed it with a par on number five.  Hole six caused some problems as she bogeyed it to return to five-over, but the NSIC Golfer of the Year finished in fine fashion.  Schmidt played the final three holes at one-under par thanks to a birdie on the par-five eighth to end her final day with a 76 (+4).

The NCAA Championship was a four round event that crowned Rollins College (+29) the National Champion seven strokes ahead of Nova Southeastern University (+36).  The Championship’s medalist was Joanna Coe of Rollins who shot a four-day total of 287 (-1).  Schmidt finished five strokes away from her second NCAA All-American honor as the top 10 was capped at +13 for the tournament.

While she finished in a tie for 15th at this year’s Championships, Schmidt put together her best four rounds in her extensive Championships history this year. Schmidt and the Peacock women’s golf team will be back in action again next year as they look to earn the first NCAA Championship team berth in the program’s history.

Schmidt Moves Up to 17th with 77 (+5) in 3rd Rd of NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship

May 14, 2008 | Golfstats Results Tag

PhotoHouston - Rachael Schmidt (Jr./Elk River, Minn.) shot a 77 (+5) on the third day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships. The tournament is being played at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. Schmidt teed off on the back nine in one of the last groups today.  Schmidt, who is playing in her third NCAA Division II Championship, moved up five spots on the day.  She began the day tied for 22nd after a 76 on day one and a 77 on day two put her nine strokes over par.  Schmidt will begin the fourth and final round tomorrow sitting in a tie for 17th place at +14.

Schmidt began today’s round on the back nine which gave her trouble over the first two days of the Championship.  The junior carded a 41 and a 42 the first two days on the back nine, but today would be a different story.  Schmidt opened with three straight pars before bogeying the par-five thirteenth hole.  She regrouped quickly and parred the next four holes, but ended the back nine two-over par as she took an extra stroke on the eighteenth to finish her first nine in 38 strokes.

The Elk River-native got the two strokes back over the first three holes after the turn as she birdied the par-five first hole and the par-four third hole to move back to even par on the day.  She remained steady on holes four and five with pars before finding trouble on number six.  Schmidt took a triple bogey on the sixth and moved three strokes over par with three holes to play.  The NSIC women’s golfer of the year refocused and took pars on the par-three seventh and the par-five eighth holes.  Unfortunately, she found trouble on her final hole of the day taking a double bogey on the par-four ninth to move back to five-over par.

The National Championship is a four round event that will crown both a team champion and ten All-Americans. Schmidt finished 10th as a freshman in 2006 to earn All-American honors by compiling a 54-hole total of 236 (78.6 average).  As a sophomore, Schmidt finished 32nd in 2007 with a 72-hole total of 317 (79.2 average).  She is set to tee off in the final round of the Championship tomorrow at 8:05 a.m.  Schmidt will begin her final round on the back nine for the third time this week.

Schmidt Shoots 77 on Day Two of NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship

May 14, 2008 | Golfstats Results Tag

PhotoHouston - Rachael Schmidt (Jr./Elk River, Minn.) shot a 77 (+5) on day two of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships. The tournament is being played at the Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas. Schmidt followed up her first day score of 76 for a two-day total of 153 (+9) which places her in a tie for 22nd place. This is the third time that Schmidt has earned an individual spot at the NCAA Division II Championships.

Schmidt opened up today's round on the back with a birdie on number ten, but quickly fell off pace with a double bogey and five bogeys to complete her first nine holes six strokes over par with a 42.  The junior regrouped nicely at the turn as she parred five of the first six holes on the front side.  Schmidt sat at +7 on the day with three holes to play and the NSIC Golfer of the Year came through with two birdies in the final three holes.  She carded a two on the par-three seventh and a four on the par-five eighth, before nearly grabbing a third birdie in a row on number nine.  Her tap-in par on the ninth green gave her a 77 (+5) on the day and a tie at 22nd in the Championship.  Three golfers share the lead in the tournament; all three have shot an even-par 144 through the first 36 holes.

The National Championship is a four round event that will crown both a team champion and ten All-Americans. Schmidt finished in a tie for 10th as a freshman in 2006 to earn All-American honors by compiling a 54-hole total of 236 (78.6 average). As a sophomore, Schmidt finished 32nd in 2007 with a 72-hole total of 317 (79.2 average). She is set to tee off in the next to last group of the day beginning at 2:03 p.m.  Schmidt will once again begin her round on the back nine.

PhotoSpringfield, Mo. - Upper Iowa junior Rachael Schmidt continued her strong start this year at the Drury Regional Shootout in Springfield, Missouri the past two days.  Schmidt earned Medalist honors over 96 other golfers in the tournament.  The Elk River native fired a 75 on day one and followed it up with a 73 today to leapfrog from sixth to first.  Schmidt led the field in par 3 scoring with a 2.88 (-1) average, while locking in at third in par 4 scoring (4.15 (+3)) and fourth in par 5 scoring (5.25 (+2)).  Schmidt showed her consistency as she led all golfers with 24 pars adding 4 birdies along the way.

Schmidt led the Upper Iowa team to a tie for fourth place in the eighteen team tournament.  Upper Iowa shot a 645 to finish 21 strokes behind the team champion, Tarleton State.  Rochelle Schmidt finished in a tie for 25th over the 36-hole tourney with a 163 (83-80), while Jill Preeshl was just a stroke behind (164 (83-81)) to finish in a tie for 30th.  Lindsey Holien (170) and Laura Taylor (180) rounded out the team scoring, while Glenna Meyer played as an individual and shot a 180.

After the shootout Head Coach Chad Markuson said, “What a difference a year makes.  Last year when we came down here we shot a 680 and finished in seventeenth place.  To come down here this year and compete with and defeat some of the best Division II teams in the country is a real benchmark for our program.  Rachael played very well the last two days and was fun to watch go about her business.  The whole team battled for every stroke which is a lesson we learned at last year’s NCAA Regional.  This was a great two days for the UIU women’s golf program.”

The team will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota for a tournament hosted by Concordia University-St. Paul this coming weekend, Sept. 16-17.
