Houston, Texas - Second-ranked Tommy Abbott (So., 149 lbs, Willmington, Del.) became the 28th national champion to wear the Minnesota State singlet. Abbott won a 6-5 decision against fourth-ranked Christopher Freije of Western State University to claim his first national championship. Abbott’s win helped the second-ranked Mavericks to a third-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships with 71.5 points. MSU has now finished in the top-5 the last five years and produced three national champions in the last two seasons. The University of Nebraska-Omaha were crowned national champions for the sixth time in its history with 146.5 points.

“Our team goal will continue to be winning a national championship,” said head coach Jim Makovsky. “I’m proud of our guys. We have a lot of new guys and at the beginning of the season it was a blank sheet of paper, but we ended up having a successful season. I’m proud of Tommy (Abbott). He’s gone through a lot of adversity and he made a lot of improvements this season, both as a person and as a wrestler. He has a chance to do something that has never been done in school history - win three national championships.”

The championships were held at the NCAA Division II National Championships Festival on the campus of the University of Houston.

Upper Iowa's Travis Eggers took his shot at the 157 pound title tonight at the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas. Eggers toed the line against Todd Meneely of Nebraska-Omaha. Meneely claimed the title at 149 pounds in the last two NCAA Championships before moving up a weight class this year.

Near the end of the first period Meneely scored a takedown, but Eggers picked up an escape before the period ended. The only other point scored in regulation was an escape by Eggers in the third period after opening the period on bottom. The match moved to its first sudden victory period where both wrestlers were unable to score. Both wrestlers then rode the other out during the tie breaker periods to send the match to a second overtime. In the second sudden overtime period Meneely picked up his third National Championship title thanks to a takedown. Eggers was defeated in the end 4-2.

Eggers' season ends with the junior's second All-American honor and second top three finish at the National Championships in as many years. The 157-pounder finished the year with a 22-9 record on the year.

NSIC Ranks Five in Top 20

October 27, 2008 | Full Release

LogoThe NSIC has five schools ranked in the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Association Top 20 Poll. Minnesota State was the topped ranked team in the number two spot. Upper Iowa (10) and St. Cloud (12) followed along with Augustana (14) and MSU Moorhead tied for 17th. Upper Iowa's Travis Eggers was also ranked tops in his 157 pound weight class.

Minnesota State fell agonizingly short of winning its first national championship since 1965 last year and the Mavericks will rely on four returning All-Americans in their attempt to be a prime contender again in 2009. Two-time All-American Brady Wilson is the highest returning placer after finishing fourth at heavyweight last year, with MSU also counting on 133 John Putman (6th), 141 Travis Elg (6th) and 149 Tommy Abbott (5th) along with 174 qualifier Tim Matheson.

"Our main mission is to win a NCAA Division II national team championship,” said MSU coach Jim Makovsky, whose team went 20-1-1 in duals and won the NWCA Division II National Duals title last year. “That will always be our short-range, medium-range and long-range goal for our wrestling program.”

NSIC WRESTLERS TO WATCH IN 2008-09

Augustana - Ty Copsey (197 lbs, So., Glenwood, Iowa) placed first at the NCAA North Regional at 197 pounds last season to qualify for Nationals.  At Nationals Copsey finished in fourth place to earn All-American honors, one of two last year for the Vikings.  He finished the season with a 31-7 overall record and was named the North Central Conference Freshman of the Year. He iis ranked atop all the NSIC wrestlers at 197 pounds in the individual preseason rankings.

University of Mary - Keith McCleary (285, Sr., Napoleon, N.D.) returns to the mat after a three-year hiatus. As a freshman, McCleary earned All-American honors after finishing seventh at the NAIA national tournament in 2005. When U-Mary began its move to NCAA Division II, McCleary concentrated on football. His career culminated last season when he earned First Team All-NSIC honors in 2007 as a nose guard and earned a spot in the Cactus Bowl all-star game. His brother Kevin also wrestles for the Marauders. Keith will be eligible to wrestle beginning in January.

Minnesota State - Brady Wilson (285 lbs, Jr., Faribault, Minn. / Faribault HS) enters this season a two-time All-American and two time NCAA National Qualifier. He holds a 77-16 career record at MSU including a 36-6 mark last season where he finished fourth in the nation. The year prior Wilson was a fifth place finisher at nationals. He has been named his conference’s Wrestler of the Week multiple times and is the NSIC topped ranked heavyweight in the 2008-09 preseason individual rankings.

MSU Moorhead - Tyler Tubbs (165 lbs, Sr., Chokio, Minn. / Chokio-Alberta HS) was the lone Dragon All-American in 2007—08 as she placed seventh at Nationals. He finished with a 23-6 record with a third place at the NCAA North Regionals. He was a first-team NWCA All-Academic selection the past two years and is the top ranked NSIC wrestler at 174 lbs in the preseason rankings.

Northern State - David Schiley (141 lbs, Jr., Webster, S.D. / Webster HS) is one of the headliners on a 2008-2009 Wolves squad that returns nine starters from a year ago. After a freshman season that saw him finish with less than a .500 record, Schiley exploded to a 21-11 overall record, including a 13-3 tally during dual meets. He put together a string of seven consecutive wins during last season. He finished fifth at the Northern Regional in a very strong 141 pound weight class, and looks to add to the successful foundation he built in 2007-2008. Schiley ranks fourth in the NSIC at 141 in the preseason individual rankings.

Southwest Minnesota State - Tyler Johnson (184 lbs, Sr., Harrisburg, S.D. / Harrisburg HS) enters his senior season with the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team as the program’s lone returning national qualifier. Finishing his 2007-08 campaign with a 31-19 record at 184 pounds, Johnson ranks 12th at SMSU in wins in a single season. After losing in the first round of last year’s NCAA North Regional, Johnson rattled off three consecutive wins to finish third and qualify for the NCAA championships. He also placed in five of the six open meets he wrestled in last season. Johnson has a career record of 69-51. He ranks third at 184 pounds in the NSIC preseason individual rankings.

St. Cloud State - Brad Padgett (184 lbs, Sr., Buckley, Wash. / White River HS / Highline CC) is one of two returning All-Americans for SCSU, as the senior finished in fourth at the NCAA Division II Championships after winning the North Central Region Tournament in 2008. He emerged as the starter at 184 lbs., going 35-8 overall with an 11-3 dual record and three falls. His 35 wins were a team-best and his 11 dual victories were tied for second on the squad. In the tournament portion of the schedule, Padgett won the Dragon Open, took second at the Cobber Open and took third place at Husky Open and Midwest Classic. Padgett is the topped ranked wrestler at 184 pounds in the NSIC preseason individual rankings.

Upper Iowa - Travis Eggers (157 lbs, Jr., Monona, Iowa) was named the 2007-08 NSIC Wrestler of the Year as voted upon by the league coaches. Eggers finished the season with 30 wins in forty matches and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, gaining him All-American status. The red-shirt sophomore was the NSIC’s highest place winner at the National Tournament. Eggers took second at the NCAA North Regional to earn NSIC All-Conference honors and was twice-named NSIC Wrestler of the Week last season. Travis is going to start the season at 165 lbs, he will certify at 157 lbs, and see how the jump in weight class affects his style. He is the top ranked wrestler in the NSIC at 157 in the individual preseason rankings.
