Travis Eggers was named the 2007-08 NSIC Wrestler of the Year as voted upon by the league coaches. Eggers finished the season with a 30-10 record and a fourth place finish at the National Tournament, gaining him All-American status. The red-shirt sophomore from Monona, Iowa was the NSIC’s highest place winner at the National Tournament. Eggers was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week twice this season.

Derek Bomstad was named the NSIC Rookie of the Year after finishing his first campaign with a 25-8 record and being voted the DII Outstanding Wrestler at the prestigious NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa. Bomstad went unbeaten in five matches and helped the Dragons to a surprising sixth place finish at the duals. Bomstad was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week twice this season.

NCAA DII Wrestling Championships - Day 2 NSIC Results

Cedar Rapids, Iowa -Travis Egger’s of Upper Iowa was the top finisher for the NSIC in at the NCAA DII Wrestling Championships hosted by Upper Iowa University at the U.S. Celluar Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Eggers took home fourth place honors at 157 after falling in overtime to Joe Ellenberger of Nebraska-Kearney by the score of 2-1. Teammate Tyler Mumbulo took home sixth place honors at 125 while Northern State’s Chas Welch finished in eighth place. University of Mary’s Jesse Laber (285) finished in fifth place to be the first NCAA DII All-American wrestler for U-Mary. MSU Moorhead’s Tyler Tubbs took home seventh place at 174. All five individuals were named All-Americans for finishing in the top eight in their class.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Upper Iowa began wrestling in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships this morning at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Peacocks are the host team for this year's Championship. Session One began this morning at 11:00 a.m. and featured one match each for the 160 National Qualifiers. Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Northern State's Chaz Welch and Upper Iowa's Tyler Mumbulo are the first NSIC wrestler to compete at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships. Welch (6-2) took on Cody Zimmerman (29-13) of the University of Wisconsin Parkside. Tyler Mumbulo (29-5) grabbled Caleb Hulse(11-7) of the University of Central Missouri. Both are in the 125 pound bracket.
Upper Iowa University, in conjunction with the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, has been awarded the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championship Wrestling Tournament.The event will be held in the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids March 14-15, 2008. The Crowne Plaza Hotel will be the primary host hotel for the Championship event. This will be the first time a Division II National Championship contest has been conducted in Iowa. 11 NSIC Wrestlers Advance to Nationals

Mankato, Minn. - Minnesota State University, Mankato hosted the 2008 NCAA North Regional on Sunday, March 2nd. The NSIC had 11 wrestlers advance (finished in the top four) on to the National Championships, hosted by Upper Iowa on March 14-15, 2008 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Upper Iowa, as a team, finished the day in third place. Minnesota State claimed the Regional title with 104.5 points and Nebraska-Omaha took second with 92.5 points. The Peacocks came in with 72.5 points on the day. Upper Iowa will send 6 to Nationals, followed by Northern State with two, and then Southwest Minnesota State, Mary and MSU Moorhead all with one competitor.
University of Mary
University of Mary heavyweight Jesse Laber became the first Marauders wrestler to advance to the NCAA Division II national tournament after placing third in the North Regional. The senior from Napoleon, ND, won three of his four matches on the day to capture a spot at the national championships. In the second round, Laber dropped a 5-2 decision to top-seeded and eventual champion Brady Wilson of Minnesota State University. It was Laber’s first loss of the year. In the wrestle backs, Laber pinned Lance Peters of Augustana College in 48 seconds to assure himself a spot at the nationals. Laber is now 14-1 this season. This national tournament appearance will be the third for Laber, who was the 2005 NAIA national champion and a two-time NAIA All-American at 197 pounds (he also finished third in 2003). He earned 2007 NSIC All-Conference second team football honors as a defensive end.
#15 MSU Moorhead
Tyler Tubbs (Jr., 184 Chokio.Minn.) was the lone Dragon to qualify for Nationals with his second place finish at the NCAA North Regional. This marks the second consecutive season he has named nationals.
Northern State
Northern State has two wrestlers advancing to the NCAA DII National Tournament. Cale Cornemann and Chas Welch will both make repeat appearances at the National meet. Cornemann (184, So., Yankton, S.D. / Yankton HS) won a decisive 8-4 decision in the first round and advanced to the Championship bout after UNO’s Brent Pankoke defaulted due to injury. Cornemann became the Regional runner-up at 184 pounds, falling in the Championship match by 11-4. He is 12-8 on the year. Chas Welch (125, Sr., Rapid City, S.D. / Rapid City HS) went 2-2 on the day to take fourth place in the 125-pound class and advance to Nationals. Welch injury defaulted in his two losses of the tournament, but pulled out a set of wins to finish in fourth place. This is the third National appearance for the senior.
Southwest Minnesota State
Tyler Johnson (Jr., Harrisburg, S.D.) is headed to the NCAA Division II national tournament after coming back through wrestlebacks at 184 on Sunday to place third at the North Regional tournament in Mankato. Johnson is SMSU¹s first national qualifier since 2006, when Tim Johns and Joel Wipperfurth both qualified. Johnson lost his first match of the day to top-seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked Brent Pankoke of Nebraska-Omaha.However, Johnson fought back, defeating fourth-seed Ben Becker of MinnesotaState,, 5-3. He then faced the second seed and 8th-ranked Beau Severtson of Augustana (S.D.) in the wrestleback semifinals and won a 4-3 decision. In the third-place match, Johnson was forced to wrestle Pankoke again, who was upset in the semifinals of the championship bracket. After getting pinned in his opening round match against Pankoke, Johnson came up with one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, winning a 3-2 decision to end the day and place third at 184.
#11 Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa was led by four runner-up finishes by Tyler Mumbulo (125), Travis Eggers (157), Matt Norton (197), and Dan Goodson (285). The Peacocks also got two third place finishes from Tee Adams (149) and Mitch Norton (165). The most impressive Peacock showing of the day came from Matt Norton. He was unseeded when the day began and he not only defeated both the #1 and #4 wrestlers at 197 pounds, but he won both matches by fall on his way to the finals.

Travis Eggers (#8 NCAA) recorded a pin just 39 seconds into his match with Southwest Minnesota State’s Logan McAlpin. The sophomore’s win was one of two pins on the evening; the other came from Matt Norton (6:57) in the 197 pound match. Egger’s victory gives him 25 on the season second on the team only to Tyler Mumbulo (27-4 / #2 NCAA). This marks the second time this season Eggers has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week.

Fayette, Iowa - The #11 Upper Iowa wrestling team played host to the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. UIU came into the dual with a 3-0 record in Northern Sun action and a fourth victory would seal the conference championship. The Peacocks dominated the dual gaining 12 points on two open weight forfeits combined with two pinfalls and three major decision victories to control the dual and take the victory 41-4. The win was Upper Iowa's ninth straight Northern Sun Conference victory and clinches back-to-back NSIC Championships for the Peacocks, who have dominated the conference in impressive fashion over the past two seasons.
The Peacocks return to the mat Mar. 2 to compete in the NCAA Division II North Regional in Mankato, Minn. beginning at 10 a.m. The top four in each weight class at the Regional will continue on to wrestle at the NCAA Division II Championships hosted by Upper Iowa in Cedar Rapids at the U.S. Cellular Center on Mar. 14 and 15.

BISMARCK, N.D. - Northern State's wrestling team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 33-12 win over the University of Mary on Wednesday evening. The win sets NSU's record at 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC, giving them a second place finish in the conference. The Wolves head to the North Regional on Sunday, March 2 in Mankato, Minn.
The Wolves jumped out to a 24-0 lead over the Marauders as Rick Schiley earned a 19-3 technical fall over Cody Schmidt at 133 pounds. Ryan Larsen was knotted up with Shawn Sneva in the 149-lb. class after one period. He went on to win a 14-6 major decision which, after two open weight classes from the Marauders at 125-lb. and 141-lb., gave the Wolves the heavy edge. (Read More)

Jesse Laber won both of his dual matchups of the week to remain perfect on the year. Laber recorded a 15-0 technical fall victory over Adam Westby of Concordia College. On Saturday, Laber improved his record to 10-0 this season after defeating Chris Schwiewe of 11th-ranked St. Cloud State 3-0. In his ten matches this season, Laber has allowed just one point to an opponent in a match that hasn’t ended with Laber winning by pinfall.

Fayette, Iowa - The #9 Upper Iowa wrestling team played host to the #14 Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead. UIU came into the dual with a 2-0 record in Northern Sun action, while MSUM entered the dual with a 2-1 NSIC record. The two teams met in the fourth match of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. MSU Moorhead picked up the 22-16 victory over Upper Iowa in the dual. Thursday's night action, however, took a much different route. The Peacocks dominated the dual using three pins and two major decision victories to control the dual and take the victory 32-9. The win was Upper Iowa's ninth straight Northern Sun Conference victory over the last two plus seasons. The win also clinches a piece of the NSIC Championship and a victory against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State next Friday is all that stands in the way of back-to-back titles for the Peacocks. MARSHALL, Minn. - The Northern State wrestling team annihilated Southwest Minnesota State 46-0 in an NSIC dual on Wednesday evening. The Wolves improve to 8-6 on the year and 2-1 in NSIC action, while SMSU drops to 0-9, 0-3 NSIC. The Wolves are in Sioux Falls this Saturday to take on Augustana College at 7:00 p.m.
The Wolves jumped to a quick 16-0 lead in the dual with the Mustangs following a major decision, a fall and an SMSU forfeit in the first three weight classes of the evening. Rick Schiley (6-13) went up 17-6 over Ed Reno at 133 pounds to start the night. Brother David Schiley (19-7) followed with a pin at the 4:21 mark at 141-lbs. Ryan Larsen claimed a huge 7-2 win over Upper Iowa’s #4-ranked Tee Adams last Friday evening. Larsen gave up a takedown in the first period, but that was it for the remainder of the match. Down 2-1 going into the second period, Larsen marked a takedown and a nearfall before the match ended, upsetting Adams for the win. Larsen has a record of 14-8 on the season. He has won six straight decisions.

Tyler Mumbulo (#3 NCAA) won the opening match of Upper Iowa’s dual with #1 Minnesota State. Mumbulo defeated Nick Smith (#2 NCAA) by decision 6-4. Smith scored an early takedown, but Mumbulo escaped and registered a takedown of his own. Mumbulo started down in the second period and scored the only points of the period on his second escape. Smith began the third period down, but scored on a reversal to tie the match at 4-4. Mumbulo earned the victory with his third escape and a riding time point (1:22) to win the match 6-4. Mumbulo is now 23-4 on the year. Upper Iowa (#9) lost the dual to Minnesota State (#1) 28-9.

Todd Naasz went 4-0 on the week after starting the week off with a 4-3 win over #8-ranked Matt Nelson of MSU Moorhead. The win played an important role in propelling the Wolves over the #7-ranked NSIC foe, 18-13, on Wednesday evening. Naasz then went 3-0 in action at the University of Central Missouri duals on Saturday. He started the day with a 4-2 win and wrapped things up by pinning his other two opponents, both times gaining the fall in the final 15 seconds of the first period. Naasz is 14-4 on the year. This marks the second time this season and third time in his career Naasz has been named NSIC Wrestler of the Week.

ABERDEEN, S.D. - It was a night of upsets and high energy matches as the Northern State grapplers (5-3, 1-0 NSIC) opened their NSIC schedule with a huge 18-13 win over #7-ranked Minnesota State Moorhead (10-5, 1-1 NSIC) on Wednesday. The Wolves were not intimidated by the Dragons, who entered the building with five active wrestlers ranked in the top ten in the nation. Dusty Vliem won three straight dual matches on three consecutive days, including two by pin and one by major decision. On Friday, Vliem earned a 16-3 major decision over Cory Harnitz of #4 Minnesota State University. On Saturday, Vliem pinned Southwest Minnesota State’s Cody Chamblin 1:23 into the match. Leading Upper Iowa’s Matt Norton 10-3 in the third period, Vliem finished his personal weekend trifecta by pinning Norton at 5:17. The junior from Hettinger, N.D., has now won five straight matches, three by major decision and two by pinfall. ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State's grapplers returned to action following a four-week hiatus only to be overpowered by 18th-ranked St. Cloud State, 33-6. NSU's Corbin Surat started the dual off with an exciting 4-2 to give the Wolves the lead, but the Huskies responded by winning eight of the next nine matches. The Wolves are 3-3 on the year, while St. Cloud State improves to 5-0.

MSUM, 6-1, received pins from Kelly Janke (133), Derek Bomstad (141), Rockie Stavn (165) and Tyler Tubbs (174). Fayette, Iowa - The Upper Iowa wrestling team debuted at home on Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks took the mat in their first dual of the 2007-08 season versus the Bulldogs of Truman State. UIU entered the dual ranked 6th in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, while TSU was one of four schools listed as having received votes just outside of the Top 20. The Peacocks used four wins by fall from Tyler Mumbulo and Tee Adams, as well as Mitch Norton and Matt Norton to fuel their victory over the Bulldogs 34-9. Travis Eggers picked up a major decision victory, while Brady Hakeman and Dan Goodson each picked up wins by decision.
Truman State was able to earn three victories by decision at 133, 141, and 184 pounds. After the dual completed, Tyson Brown picked up a 5-0 exhibition match win in his final collegiate match. Brown will graduate from Upper Iowa in December.
The Peacocks will next compete in the Midlands Championships on Dec. 28 and 29 and the Midwest Open on Dec. 29. (Read More)

Todd Naasz gave Northern State a 13-11 lead following the match at 197 pounds against #3 Minnesota State. Naasz pinned the Mavericks Tom Block at the 4:37 mark before Minnesota State responded with wins in the remaining five matches on their way to the 33-13 win. This marks the second time in Naasz’s career he has been selected as NSIC Wrestler of the Week (2/13/07).

Tyler Mumbulo (#6 NCAA) won the championship at 125 pounds in the Simpson Invitational. The junior went 5-0 en route to the title. Mumbulo picked up victories by fall in his first three matches over Andre Taylor (Dubuque/ 1:16), who was 20-4 entering the match, Matt Chutz (William Penn/ 3:04), and Kevin Gray (Dana/ 0:14), who was a NAIA National Qualifier last year. Mumbulo defeated Robert Nahlik (Truman State) in the semis by decision 6-3 and won the title by major decision, 10-1, over Mike Mille (Buena Vista). The four bonus point victories were impressive in a 125-pound bracket that featured #5 wrestler in Division 3, the #6 and #8 wrestlers in NAIA, and two additional former NAIA National Qualifiers.

The Upper Iowa wrestling team traveled to Augsburg College on Saturday, Nov. 17th, to compete in their second open tournament of the season. Mitch Norton (#8 NCAA) wrestled at 165 pounds and claimed one of the four Peacock championships on the day. Norton won his first match by fall over a former junior college national qualifier (3:45) and his quarterfinal match by decision 4-2. The Waverly-native pinned Jake Grygelko of Augsburg in the semis (3:42) and then won the championship match by decision 6-4 over Matt Curtis of Augsburg.

Travis Eggers went 6-1 at the Pointer Open hosted by UW-Stevens Point. Eggers (#5 NCAA) placed 3rd in the open at 157 pounds. His sole loss came against Jason Rhoten (#2 NCAA) of MSU Mankato. Eggers lost to Rhoten in the quarterfinals by the score of 6-4 in the first sudden victory period. Eggers recorded three of his victories by pinfall.
Upper Iowa Ranked 6th in NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association Preseason Poll

EDMOND, Okla. -- Defending national champion Central Oklahoma and Nebraska-Kearney will enter the 2007-08 NCAA Division II wrestling season as co-No. 1s, according to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association preseason poll released Tuesday. NSIC teams of Upper Iowa (sixth), MSU Moorhead (15th) and Northern State (18) all made appearances in the preseason pool.
The NSIC also had nine wrestlers ranked individually in the preseason poll with Northern State's Andy Sinclair (174) tabbed the highest with a #3 ranking.
The Broncos captured their seventh Division II title last season by 16 points over the runner-up Antelopes and each team finished with four first-place votes and 155 points in balloting of coaches from around the country to share the No. 1 ranking.
Minnesota State-Mankato was a solid third-place choice with 143 points while Adams State (Colo.) was fourth with 134 and Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.) fifth with 122. Rounding out the top 10 is Upper Iowa, Nebraska-Omaha, Western State (Colo.), Wisconsin-Parkside and Chadron State (Neb.).
The 2008 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will be hosted by Upper Iowa on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (Read More)
NSIC Wrestling Pre-Season Coaches Poll

Minn. - The 2007-08 NSIC Wrestling Pre-Season Coaches Poll has been release as voted on by the leagues' five coaches. Defending NSIC Champions from Upper Iowa received 74 points, good enough for first place in the poll. MSU Moorhead received 60 points for second to narrowly edge Northern State, who tallied 58 points. Southwest Minnesota State racked up 25 points while the University of Mary had 13.
