Minnesota State Selected as 2008 Division II Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year

PhotoPhotoNEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday the men’s 2008 Division II Track and Field Scholar Teams of the Year. Minnesota State University (Mankato) was selected as the 2008 Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year, and the University of North Dakota was chosen as this year’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year.

Minnesota State capped off a stellar indoor campaign with a seventh place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in March. That finish followed a North Central Conference (NCC) indoor conference championship that saw the Mavericks score an astounding 284 points. Minnesota State faired equally well in the classroom in 2008, with a 3.02 team cumulative GPA.

"We are very honored to receive this award, and it’s a great reflection on our program and Minnesota State. We feel that our academics still come first. That is the priority that we have as a program and everything falls into place,” said Minnesota State head coach Mark Schuck.

In addition to Indoor Track and Field Scholar Team of the Year Minnesota State, five other teams with top-25 national finishes at the 2008 Division II Indoor Championships earned All-Academic Team honors for their academic and athletic performance. (Read More)

Walnut, Calif. - The NSIC garnered three National Champions and 17 All-Americans at the 2008 NCAA DII National Outdoor Track & Field Championship held May 22-24 at Himler Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. Bemidji State’s Joe Remitz and Wayne State’s Katie Wilson each took home their first National Championships, both in the shot put, while MSU Moorhead’s Jennifer Hensel repeated at NCAA DII National Champion in the pole vault.

Joe Remitz (North Branch, Minn.), a seven-time All-American claimed his first NCAA Division II national championship in the shot put. The 2008 North Central Region Male Field Athlete of the Year rocketed his final throw 63-02.00, nearly 20 inches beyond his own BSU record, and more importantly, over seven inches past long-time nemesis, and defending champion Bryan Vickers of Ashland State. Remitz’s individual national championship is the 22nd in BSU history and the fifth at the NCAA Division II level. With it he also completes an eight-meet 2008 outdoor season in which he was not defeated by a single NCAA Division II competitor.

Katie Wilson , Wayne State, Shot Put - 51’ 11 3/4”

Katie Wilson of Wayne State College made school history by capturing the NCAA Division II National Championship in the women’s shot put and placing fourth in the discus throw. Wilson (Jr., Glenwood, Iowa) launched a new school record throw of 51’ 11 3/4” on her third throw of prelims that throw stood up for the national title. Wilson held the previous school mark of 49’ 10 3/4” set at the Sioux City Relays on April 19th.Wilson is the first female athlete to win an NCAA Division II national championship in track and field for the Wildcats. Wilson recorded a new school record throw in the discus with a toss of 154’ 5” on her second throw during prelims to notch the fourth place finish and her second All-American nod of the season. She also earned All-American honors in the shot put during the indoor season, placing fourth in March at the National Championships in Mankato, Minnesota. Wilson also competed in the women’s hammer throw and placed 11th out of 19 competitors with a top throw of 160’ 9”.

Jennifer Hensel, MSU Moorhead, Pole Vault - 13’ 2 1/4”

Minnesota State Moorhead crowned a national champion and decorated five athletes with All-American honors. Jennifer Hensel (Jr., Frazee, Minn.) repeated as women’s pole vault champion with a record flight of 13-2 1/4. This marks the fourth time Hensel has been named an All-American as she improved her vault 4 3/4 inches from last year (12-9 1/2).

U-Mary's Newell Named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by USTFCCCA

PhotoNEW ORLEANS - University of Mary assistant track and field coach Dennis Newell is the 2008 NCAA Division II North Central Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year as selected by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Newell, in his second year as an assistant coach for the Marauders, guides the U-Mary distance runners. He was instrumental in the University of Mary claiming its second straight Northern Sun women’s outdoor track and field championship. Under his tutelage, freshmen Alyson Piccolo and Kristen Neumiller finished 1-2 at the NSIC meet in the 10,000 meter run. The pair finished second and third in the 5,000 meter run. Additionally, Hannah Moen placed third in the 1,500 meter run and Ivy Roe grabbed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. 

Also the U-Mary Cross Country Associate Head Coach, Newell was a 10-time All-American at Black Hills State University before becoming the assistant track coach at BHSU in 2006. A six-time conference champion, Newell graduated from Black Hills State University in 2004 and received his master’s degree from the University of North Dakota in 2005.

Newell, the 2003 and 2004 DAC-10 cross country champion and most valuable player, is a USATF Level I and II (Endurance) Certified Coach.

WSC's Whisman Named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by USTFCCCA

PhotoWayne State College assistant track and field coach Josh Whisman has been named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II North Central Region Assistant Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. 

Whisman is in his second season as throws coach for the Wildcat track and field teams.  His throwers had a big hand in helping the WSC men win a third straight NSIC outdoor men’s track and field championship two weeks ago.  Brett Suckstorf and John Sloup both set new school records in the hammer throw this season and were national provisional qualifiers with Suckstorf qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Walnut, California.

The USTFCCCA honors the top athletes and coaches in the eight Division II regions.

PhotoMSU Moorhead’s Ashley Roemer (Jr., Maple Lake, Minn.) was a triple winner for the Dragons in the heptathlon (4,755), high jump (5-6), and 800 meters (2:15.36) and was a member of the winning relay teams in the 4 x 400 (3:59.88) and 4 x 800 (9:13.36) at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this season.. Roemer was the high point performer at the NSIC Outdoor Championship and was named NSIC Field Athlete of the Year. She advanced to NCAA Nationals in both the heptathlon and high jump.

PhotoJoe Remitz (North Branch, Minn.), a senior thrower at Bemidji State University, has been named as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association North Central Region Field Athlete of the Year, the organization announced today.

Remitz is among a field of 32 student-athletes and coaches hailing from the country's eight regions that will be honored at a USTFCCCA banquet held in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pamona, Calif. this week.

In addition to being presented with the regional award, Remitz is in California as a participant in this year's outdoor championships. He enters the meet slotted second in the shot put field of 17 and will vie for his seventh collegiate All-America accolade in his sixth trip to an national championship meet and third during the outdoor season.

Remitz capped a seven-meet 2008 outdoor season, in which he was not defeated by a single NCAA Division II competitor, by registering top-three finishes in the throwing events at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Meet. In addition to notching a title in the shot put, Remitz penciled in new school and conference records in the event with a season-best throw of 61-feet, six and three-quarter inches as well as a new BSU hammer throw mark of 177-00.

Wrapping up his collegiate career at the national championships, Remitz will undoubtedly leave BSU as its most decorated male field athlete of all time. In addition to his newly-established outdoor shot put and hammer throw standards, he also owns BSU records in the indoor shot (59-7 1/2) and weight throw (62-3) while he has amassed seven individual conference championships, 12 All-NSIC honors, is a two-time NSIC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year (2007, 2008), was the 2008 NSIC Outdoor Field Athlete of the year and earned NSIC Newcomer of the Year laurels in 2006.

Less than 24 hours after setting a school record in the hammer throw in the first day of the 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field meet in Wayne Neb., senior Joe Remitz (North Branch, Minn.) captured a shot put title and finished second in the discus throw en route to being named as the league’s Male Field Athlete of the Year.
For the second time in as many days, Remitz posted record-setting marks at the championships. The senior not only posted a new BSU standard, he also put a new NSIC shot put mark in the books. His toss of 61-feet, six and three-quarter inches edged his own school record by 10 inches and erased a four-year-old conference mark set by University of Minnesota Duluth’s Dan Soldner (58-05 3/4) by more than two feet. In addition he placed second in the discus throw, extending the tape to 149-06.

Northern State’s Jake Hamik (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) won a title in the 400m Dash (48.40s) and set a new NSIC record in the 400m hurdles (52.60s) on Saturday at the NSIC Track & Field Championships. He also reached an NCAA provisional time in the 110m hurdles (14.57s) and was a member of the winning 4x400m relay team. Hamik has been declared the NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Year and was the highest point performer at the Championships. This is the fifth NSIC Athlete of the Year award for Hamik.

U-Mary’s Kacie Sweep earned Northern Sun Women’s Track Athlete of the Year honors after winning three titles The junior from Bismarck, ND, won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and ran the second leg on the winning 4x100 meter relay. She met the NCAA provisional qualifying standards when she finished the 200 meter dash in 24.72 seconds.

Wayne State’s Marlon Brink was named NSIC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season after leading the Wildcats to a third consecutive NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

For the second straight year, U-Mary’s Mike Thorson was named the NSIC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year. Under his direction, U-Mary has won four consecutive conference titles (indoor & outdoor) and 13 in 14 years at the University of Mary.

Wayne, Neb. - The Wayne State College men’s track and field team captured a third straight Northern Sun Conference championship Saturday in rainy and windy conditions at the 2008 Northern Sun Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held in Wayne, Nebraska.  The Wildcats scored 164 points to edge second place University of Mary with 156.5. Marlon Brink of Wayne State College was named the NSIC Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year for leading the Wildcats to the team title while junior distance runner Nate Preston, who won three individual events, was selected the NSIC Men’s Newcomer of the Year.

The men’s team had seven conference champions to help win the team title as Preston, a junior from Omaha Benson won three events for the Wildcats, winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:20.09), crossing the line first in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 32:31.80 and taking first in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:36.67.  Another multi-winner for Wayne State was Pierce junior Brett Suckstorf, winning the discus (150’ 7”) and the hammer throw (181’ 1”).  Other conference champions were Ben Jansen in the 800 meter run (1:53.27) and Tim Pilakowski in the long jump (22’ 8”).

NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Wayne, Neb. - The Wayne State College men’s track and field team is in first place after the first day of the 2008 Northern Sun Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held in Wayne, Nebraska while the University of May led on the women’s side.

Nate Preston was a double winner for WSC on the opening day, winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:20.09) and crossing the line first in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 32:31.80.  Also winning a conference title on the opening day for the Wildcats were Tim Pilakowski in the long jump (22’ 8”) and Brett Suckstorf in the hammer throw (181’ 1”).  Pilakowski also qualified second in the prelims in both the 100 meter dash (10.91) and the 200 meter dash (22.11). (Read More)

The University of Mary women’s outdoor track and field team won two individual titles and raced out to a lead in the team race after the first day of the 2008 Northern Sun championships. The Marauders men have also claimed two day one titles but find themselves in fourth place entering day two.

The U-Mary women have compiled 87 points after nine events. Minnesota State Moorhead is second with 66. On the men’s side, Wayne State College leads with 83 points while the Marauders check in with 38.5 points.

Two freshmen claimed individual conference championships on the first day for the women. Holly Hassler grabbed the javelin title with a throw of 39.25 meter. Alyson Piccolo nudged out another U-Mary freshman, Kristen Neumiller, 39:09.26 to 39:09.65, in an incredibly tight race.

Brianna Perry placed second in the long jump and took third in the high jump. Earlier she had finished second in the heptathlon. Ashley Grammens was second in the high jump. (Read More)

NSIC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
Wayne, Neb. - The 2008 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship are set for Friday & Saturday, May 9-10 at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. The outdoor event begins with field events on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and track beginning at 3:00 p.m. Saturday kicks off with field events at noon and track at 12:45 p.m. The awards ceremony will take place at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Saturday evening. Full schedule of events can be found on page two of the release.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Concordia-St. Paul’s Tre Sayles (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) broke his own school record in the high jump, clearing 6-8 3/4 to post a NCAA provisional qualifying standard at the Meet of the UnSaintly on the campus of Hamline University. Sayles won the high jump, finished second in the triple jump (45-11 1/4) and third in the long jump (21-11 3/4).

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Northern State’s Jake Hamik (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D.) ran an NCAA Div II automatic qualifying mark in winning the 400m hurdles running a 51.61 at the Howard Wood Relays. He also anchored the NSU men’s 4x400m relay to a second place finish with an outstanding 47.5 split. Hamik is presently ranked in the top three in four different NSIC events and is on two top ranked relays.

Bemidji State’s Sheena Devine (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) made a splash at the Ron Masanz Invitational, as she made her first appearance of the outdoor season. She not only provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the shot put with a toss of 46-02.00, the defending national champion also posted the NSIC’s second-longest throw of the season and slid into 10th place in the 2008 in Division II standings.

MSU Moorhead’s Anna VanWechel (Fr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) set a Ron Masanz Invitational record in the 5000 meters with a winning time of 18:02.10, and placed second in the 1500, 4:39.16, at Moorhead on Saturday. MSU women finished second in a 10-team field with 118 points while Dragon men placed sixth among 12 teams at the 2008 Ron Masanz Invitational last Saturday at MSUM.

Aberdeen, S.D. - Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Ashley Roemer set a new NSIC record in the women’s heptathlon with 4,755 points. She opened the second day with a strong effort in the long jump of  17’ 2” long jump and she closed the day with a outstanding run of 2:19.60 in the 800m run with some very windy conditions. Her record breaking performance breaks one of the oldest records on the books (Char Nelson, Southwest State University 4,666 pts -1982). She also met the NCAA Div II nation meet qualifying mark provisionally and is presently ranked 4th in the nation.

Bemidji State University’s Zac Preble also was able to hold on to his first day lead in the men’s decathlon. He also improved his NCAA Div II provisional mark with a final total of 6,669 points, which presently ranks him 8th in the nation. Preble had very strong efforts in both the 110m hurdles of 16.01 and a personal best in the pole vault of 14’ 3.50”.

NSIC Outdoor Hep/Decathlon Results - Day 1

Aberdeen, S.D. - Bemidji State’s Zac Preble has a commanding lead in the men’s decathlon following day one of competition. The 2007 NSIC Champion put together a solid first day, highlighted with a 51.5 400 meter run. Preble is presently ranked 7th in the NCAA Div II rankings. Bemidji State athletes sit in 1st and 2nd place after the first day.

Minnesota State University Moorhead athlete Ashley Roemer also has a significant lead after the first day of the women’s heptathlon. Roemer met the NCAA Div II National meet provisional standard in the High Jump with a jump of 5’ 8.50”. She is looking to add her mane to the NCAA list in the heptathlon and with a best in the 800 meters ( the last event of Tuesdays competition ) of 2:11 looks to be a sure bet to do so.

Wayne State’s Tim Pilakowski (Sr., Genoa, Neb.) won the long jump at the Sioux City Relays with a jump of 23’ 6”, which was an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying mark. He currently leads the NSIC in the event and is ranked 6th in the NCAA in the event. He also placed second in the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.96 and ran a leg on the 4 x 100 meter relay with a 3rd place finish.

Wayne State’s Nate Preston (So., Omaha, Neb.) placed second at the Long Beach State Invitational in the 3000 meter steeplechase with an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying mark of 9:19.06. This was just his third time running the event. He currently is ranked 15th in the NCAA in the event and leads the NSIC by 15 seconds.

Northern State’s Amanda Madden (So., Herreid, S.D.) started her week with an NCAA Div II provisional mark in the hammer throw at the Cobber Twilight, throwing a personal best school record of 166’ 0” and placing 2nd (she also placed 6th in the discus). PhotoNSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Wayne State’s Rachel Roebke (Sr., Seward, Neb.) won 3 events at the Sioux City Relays. She repeated as the champion in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.38 seconds which is an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying mark. She is currently ranked 7th in the NCAA rankings. Roebke also helped the Wildcats to a pair of first place relay finishes by running a leg on the 4 x 100m relay with a winning time of 48.95 and also a leg on the 4 x 400 meter relay with a winning time of 3:57.54.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
University of Mary’s Josh Obrigewitch (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.) erased a long-time school record with an automatic national qualifying performance of 56’ 6” to win the shot put at Sunday’s Marauder Open. The mark was a new Marauder Open and Community Bowl record. Obrigewitch, who last week provisionally nationally qualified in the discus, placed second in the discus with a performance of 152-3.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Wayne State’s Tim Pilakowski (Sr., Genoa, Neb.) won the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.91 seconds at the WSC Sunshine Invite. He also won the 200 meter dash in a time of 22.40.

PhotoNSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Wayne State’s Lacey Jensen (Sr., Central City, Neb.) won the hammer throw at the WSC Sunshine Invite with a Provisional National Qualifying Mark of 166’ 7”. It is the second week in a row that she has broken the WSC school record and gotten an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Mark.

Bemidji State’s Kristi Buerkle (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) headlined the Bemidji State women’s performance at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. taking first in the 400-meter dash with an 2008 NSIC-best time of 57.03 while she also finished the 200-meters in third posting her fastest time of the outdoor season (25.82).

PhotoNSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Wayne State’s Brett Suckstorf (So., Pierce, Neb.) won the hammer throw at the Wildcat Classic with an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Mark of 183’ 04”. His mark was also a new WSC School Record. His mark is almost a 20 foot improvement from last year when his personal best was 163’ 5”.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Northern State’s Bill Cameron (So., Aberdeen, S.D.) took two individual first place awards at the NSU Open and anchored the men’s 4x400m relay team to another first place. Cameron won the 110m hurdles in 14.93, the 400m hurdles in 54.25, and ran a 50.4 anchor split on the 4x400m relay.

PhotoNSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Wayne State’s Katie Wilson (Jr., Glenwood, Iowa) had a big day at the Wildcat Classic with 3 NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Marks. The 2 time indoor All-American won the shot put with a PNQ mark of 46’ 2 1/2”. She placed second in the hammer throw with a PNQ mark of 161’ 10”. She finished her day with her third PNQ mark in the discus with a 2nd place finish with a mark of 145’ 10”.

PhotoNSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Concordia-St. Paul’s Katie Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn.) continues to add her name to the recordbook adding the outdoor 400m record to a list of three other indoor and outdoor records she already holds. She broke Jenny Carbone’s 2002 time of 58.45 by crossing the line in 57.59. On the day, Johnson won the 400m dash and the triple jump with a leap of 36-11 1/2 at the Hamile Invite.
