PhotoHouston, Texas - The NSIC crowned one National Champion, had 18 individual and two relay teams named All-Americans at the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championship held at the University of Houston on March 13-14, 2009. Minnesota State’s Katelin Rains made it three years straight, as she took home the National Championship in the women’s pole vault. Northern State’s Amanda Madden finished in second place in the women’s 20-pound weight throw, while Minnesota State’s Dan Novak took home second in the men’s pole vault.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year:
MSU Moorhead’s Derik Brugger was saluted as the NSIC Men’s Field Events Athlete of the Year. Brugger won the NSIC Championship in the pole vault as he slung himself 17-0.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Year:
Concordia-St. Paul’s Kawaskii Bacon became the titleholder in the 200 meter dash, running a time of 21.96 seconds. He added another eight points to the team total with a second place finish in the 55m dash, running 6.40s. Bacon is assured a spot in the NCAA Championships with his automatic qualifying time in the 55m dash. He will await word from the NCAA to see if he will also race in the 200m.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Newcomer of the Year:
Northern State’s redshirt freshman Cody Hunt continued his season-long dominance in the shot put, firing off a career-best toss of 17.06 meters (55-11.75 feet) at the NSIC Championships. That mark, which is a mere 34 centimeters shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying standard, vaults Hunt into the top ten on the national performance list.

PhotoPhotoNSIC Men’s High Points Performer:
Minnesota State’s Kelvin Rodgers earned the High Point Performance award, along with Concordia University’s Tye Sayles, with 20 points. At the NSIC Championships Rodgers earned eight points with a second-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 22’-11 ¾ and 12 points with a pair of third-place finishes in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 6.50 and 22.30, respectively.
Sayles started the weekend with a third place finish in the long jump (6.95m, 22-9.75) before taking another third place finish in the high jump (1.97m, 6-5.5). He then upped his final place finish in the triple jump, taking second place with a mark of 14.20m (46-7.25).

PhotoNSIC Men’s Coach of the Year:
MInnesota State’s head coach Mark Schuck was named the NSIC Coach of the Year after leading his team to its 12th indoor conference championship in the programs history, and third in the last four seasons, with two coming as a member of the North Central Conference. This is Schuck’s fourth indoor coach of the year award with the first three coming in 2004, 2006 and 2008 as a member of the NCC.

Bemidji, Minn. – The Minnesota State men’s indoor track and field team won its 12th indoor conference championship, and third in the last four seasons with two coming as a member of the North Central Conference, at the NSIC Championships in Bemidji, Minn.

This is MSU's fifth Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship and first since 1981.

MSU finished first with 144.50 points and was followed by Minnesota Duluth with 95 points.

Junior Sam Lance turned in one of MSU’s two first-place finishes as he set a new conference record in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:21.52. Junior Adam Endres finished second in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:22.74.

Sophomore Dana Schmidt record MSU’s other first-place finish as he set a new conference record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:22.89.

Junior James Krajsa finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:26.49 and third in the 5,000 meter-run with a time 15:25.31.

Junior Mike Elliot finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.80, while the 4x400 relay team finished second with a time of 3:24.37.

Senior Kelvin Rodgers took third in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 6.50 and 22.30, respectively.

Minnesota State wraps up its indoor schedule at the NCAA Championships beginning March 13, in Houston, Tex.

NSIC Indoor Track and Field Performance List

BEMIDJI , Minn. --  The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s track and field teams are all set to compete in the conference championship meet. The event is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 27, at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center in Bemidji, Minn. Competition will contine until 7:20 p.m., the meet will carry over into Saturday and is slated for a 10 a.m. start.

The field events will begin the conference meet as the long jump, pole vault, high jump, and weight throw get underway. Track events will begin at 3 p.m. when the mile runners toe the line. Distance Medley Relays will be the last event of Day 1. This event is schedule to begin at 7:20 p.m.

On Saturday, the field events will pick up where they left off the night before beginning at 10 a.m. All athletes who have qualified for the finals will begin competition at 1 p.m. Once again, the mile run will mark the start of the track events, the 4x400-meter relays will signify the end of the championship meet at 4 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held on the infield at 4:45 p.m. (Schedule of Events)

PhotoMinnesota State’s Kelvin Rodgers (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) took first in the long jump with a jump of 23’-5 ½ at the Snowshoe Open.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota Duluth’s Brian Ott (So., Duluth, Minn / East HS) won the 200 in an indoor PR of 22.59 seconds and later anchored the 4 X 400 relay to second with a 49.2 relay carry at the CSB/SJU Quad.

PhotoAfter leading the 14-man field by 399 points after Day 1 of the competition, Bemidji State University’s Zac Prebel increased his margin of victory to 460 points on Monday while eclipsing the 5,000-point mark to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s heptathlon with a new conference and Barnett Center record of 5,012 points. Bryan Schiller of the University of Mary moved into second place after winning the pole vault portion of the event with a vault of 4.35 meters (14’03.5”). Schiller edged Minnesota-Duluth’s Chris Parno for that second place spot with a point total of 4,552. Parno was third with 4,539 points. All three athletes surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard of 4,500 points, while Prebel, who successfully defended his 2007 & 2008 conference title in this event, moved into fifth place on the national performance list with his effort.

Augustana’s Travis Beniak (Fr., Mazeppa, Minn.) had a strong weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. On Friday, he anchored the Vikings’ distance medley relay team to a season-best time of 10:11.48, good enough for an 11th place finish. The Vikings were the top Division II team in the field. Then on Saturday, Beniak turned in a personal-best time of 4:15.16 in the mile run to finish in sixth place. He was the top Division II runner in the field of 55 runners.

NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
PhotoUniversity of Mary’s Ben Jacobson (So., Bismarck, ND/Bismarck HS) picked up another double win at the NDSU Bison Open on Friday in Fargo, ND. The sophomore standout won both the shot put for the second week in a row. He tossed the shot 52’ 7 ¼” and the weight throw 58’ 1 ¼”. Both performances are provisional national marks. Jacobson, a national qualifier a year ago, leads the NSIC in the weight throw with a distance of 59’ 7 ½”.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Bemidji State’s Abe Hartsell (So., Alexandria, Minn.) set a personal-best time in the mile run at Saturday’s Beaver Classic clocking a time of 4:35.37 to take first place in the event. Hartsell’s tie also marked BSU fastest mile of the 2009 season.

PhotoMinnesota Duluth’s Tom Soldner (Sr. Captain, Cold Spring, Minn.) set a school record in the weight throw with a National Provisional mark of 17.46 meters (57’ 3.5”) at the Warren Bowlus Open at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota State’s Mike Elliot (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.96 at the MSU Open and Pentathlon.

NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
PhotoMSU Moorhead’s Derik Brugger, (Sr., Dickinson, N.D.,) captured first place in the pole vault and broke the Olson Forum record with a flight of 16-6 at the Cobber Alumni Meet on Saturday in Moorhead. Brugger moved into third place nationally and reached the provisional qualifying mark. MSUM men grabbed seven first place finishes at last Saturday’s Alumni Meet at Concordia College.

PhotoNSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Northern State’s Bill Cameron (Jr., Aberdeen, SD.,) won two events in the Wolves dual with Jamestown College. The All-NSIC hurdler ran 7.91 to win the 55 meter hurdles and then ran a 52.2 in the 400 meters also good for first place.

NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
PhotoBemidji State's Zac Preble (Jr., Coleraine, Minn.) captured the heptathlon title at Bemidji State University’s Super 8 Open Saturday, breaking his own school record and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor championship in the process. Preble posted a 4,960 to rank third in the country and out score the rest of the Super 8 field by more than 900 points. The sophomore earned event victories in the 55-meter hurdles (8.40), pole vault (14-01.25) and shot put (50-00.00) en route to his record-setting win.

NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
PhotoConcordia-St. Paul's Kawaskii Bacon (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Edison HS) had an outstanding weekend on the indoor track, improving his NCAA provisional time in the 60 meter dash and also taking first place in the 200 meter run at the Minnesota Open. Bacon’s time of 6.80 seconds in the 60m dash not only improves his school record at Concordia, but will also likely make him the first Concordia athlete to participate in the NCAA Championships, based on past season qualifying marks. His time was good for third place in a field topped by a 2007 NCAA DII Championships finalist and a University of Minnesota athlete. Bacon was the top placewinner in the 200m run on Saturday, running a time of 22.19 seconds.
