It was also the third consecutive All-American award for the indoor season and the fifth of his career.
“I feel great being able to earn All-American honors in the weight throw,” commented Remitz. “That atmosphere here is great, it is awesome to have the support of all my teammates and family and I think it helped add a couple feet to my longest throw.”
“We are very proud of Joe and what he was able to do in the weight throw being the first All-American in the weight,” said coach Craig Hougen. “He competed like a champion today and gave it everything he had, Joe into the event in 10th place and came out sixth so we are very proud of what he accomplished today.”

Brett Suckstorf sets National Provisional Qualifying Mark, New School Record in Weight Throw at MSU Open
January 12, 2008
The Wayne State College men's indoor track and field team competed Saturday at the Minnesota State University Alumni Open held in Mankato, Minnesota. Other teams competing in the meet were host MSU Mankato, North Dakota, Augustana, South Dakota, Northern State, Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan and St. Olaf College.
The Wildcats had one new school record and one national provisional qualifying mark while winning four events in the meet. Leading the way for the WSC men’s team was Brett Suckstorf, who won the 35-pound weight throw with a new school record and NCAA national provisional qualifying mark of 58’ 10 ¾”, topping the old school mark by nearly four feet.
“Brett really performed well,” commented WSC head track and field coach Marlon Brink. “He had a couple of throws that were 58 feet or better so he was very consistent at that range.”
Other wins by the men included Tim Pilakowski taking first in the 60 meter dash in 7.04 seconds, Cheto Cerda taking first in the 1,000-meter run (2:39.84) and the men’s distance medley relay team of Cerda, Ben Jansen, Nathaniel Bergen and Nate Preston coming in first with a time of 11:03.11.
"Overall, this meet showed our team that we have potential, but have quite a bit of work to do to get where we want to be by the end of the season,” added Brink.
Wayne State will compete in two meets next weekend, participating in the University of Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln and the University of South Dakota Bill Hillenbrand Open on Friday and Saturday.
