GCAA Announces Division II PING All-Region Teams

NORMAN, Okla. - Winona State's Brady Strangstalien and Upper Iowa's Adam Winans have been name to the Ping/Golf Coaches Association of American All-Central Region Team.

Strangstalien was the top WSU golfer of the season, leading the Warriors in the NCAA Division II Super Region competition with a 13th-place finish. Strangstalien also was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Golfer of the Year after taking medalist honors for a second straight year in the league championship.

Winans led the Peacocks’ seventh place finish in the 2008 Central Regional with rounds of 76-70-76 for a 54-hole total of 222 (+6).  The three day effort placed the junior in fifth place.  Winans registered one eagle, eight birdies, and 31 pars; shooting par or better on 40 of the 54 holes. Winans earned one medalist honor on the season at the Express Suites Riverport Inn with a 69-68 for a two-round total of 137.  Winans shot a 68 on one other occasion this spring.  He led the team in scoring average for the year registering 75.0 strokes a round.

The all-region team consists of ten players and is selected by GCAA all-region committee. Any player ranked in the top 50 of the final Golfstat individual ranking is automatically added to his all-region team. Members of the PING All-Region team is eligible for PING All-America honors.

Winona State MEN 6th, UIU 7th at Men’s Golf Super Regional
Findlay, Ohio--Winona State and Upper Iowa completed their spring play at the NCAA DII Central Regional today at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. Winona State edged Upper Iowa by three strokes to take home the sixth spot while the Peacocks were seventh. Winona State shot a 307 and Upper Iowa a 312 on day three. The Warriors were led by Kevin Loeffler on day three after he shot a round of 75. Brandy Stangstalien was the Warriors top finisher overall witha 226 (+12) for the championshp. Upper Iowa was led by Josh Wells, who carded a 74. The team, who came into the regional as the #6 seed, finished the regional in seventh place in the standings after 54 holes. The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II Spring National Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. Upper Iowa 6th, WSU 7th After Day 2 of Men's Golf Super Regional

Findlay, Ohio - Upper Iowa shot a second round 305 for a +18 to fall to sixth position after day two of the NCAA DII Men's Central Regional Championship held Monday, May 5th through May 7th at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio. The Peacocks were fifth after day on as they shot 310 (+23) for a two day total of 615 (+39). Winona State, the other NSIC team competing in the tournament moved up to seventh place with a second round 297 to put them at 617 for the championship. Washburn University (Kan.) is the overall team leader with a +9 over par 585 in the first two rounds. Upper Iowa's Adam Winans shot a two under par 70 on day two to sit at two under for the championship which ties him for third, only five strokes off the lead. Missouri Western State's Aaron Lisenbee shot a lights out seven under par 65 to sit atop the leader board with a three under 141 for the championship.

Action will continue conclude on Wednesday, May 7.

The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 14-17 at the Division II Spring National Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. The finals will be hosted by Rice University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.

Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2008 championships, the additional super regional allotments are as follows:

Findlay, Ohio - Upper Iowa shot a first round 311 for a +23 to sit in the fifth position after day one of the NCAA DII Men's Central Regional Championship held Monday, May 5th through May 7th at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio. Winona State, the other NSIC team competing in the tournament sits in eighth place with a +32 round of 320 on the day. Washburn University (Kan.) is the overall team leader witha +10 over par 298 in the first round. Upper Iowa's Matt Dahlke and Adam Winans, Minnesota, Crookston's Jacob Sanders and Winona State's Ross Wilhelm were the low NSIC shooters on the day as they all finished tied for 8th place with a four over par 76 on the day. Low round overall on the day was Missouri Southern State's Jamie Voegeli even round of 72.

Action will continue again tomorrow on Tuesday, May 6 and then conclude on Wednesday, May 7.

NCAA Regional Golf Tournament

The Winona State and Upper Iowa men's golf teams have been invited to the NCAA Central Regional played May 5-7, 2008 in Findlay, Ohio. Individuals from the NSIC making the regional were Steven Busho (UMC), Jacob Sanders (UMC) and Kyle Lewis (CSP). Teams play a practice round on Sunday, May 4, and then play three rounds of competition from May 5-7. The men's Central Regional is actually part of a Super Regional at Red Hawk Run Golf Course. The Great Lakes Regional also takes place at the course on the same dates. Eight teams and five individuals are invited to compete for each regional's championship. Only three teams and one individual advance out of the Central/Great Lakes Super Regional; each region's champion team, the next lowest team score from either region earns the final team nod, and the top individual not on one of the three qualifying teams move on to the National Championship in Houston, Texas. Out of the field of 90 golfers only 16 will make their way to the Lonestar State. The Upper Iowa men's team is making their first-ever trip to an NCAA Regional as a team and wiland will play as the #6 team.

Steven Busho shot a round of 74 (36-38) to finish tied for first place in the Concordia University Spring Invite. The Golden Eagles as a team finished in seventh place shooting a team score of 325. Minnesota State University closed out the day with the team win, shooting a score of 309. In addition to his first place finish at the Concordia University Invite, Busho won the overall title with the best combined scores from the Golden Bear Invite and the Concordia University Invite. He tied for fourth on April 14 shooting a 71 (36-35) and won the all-around on April 15 with his 74 (36-38). Jimmy Fromm from Minnesota State tied for second after day one with a score of 70. Busho shot a 71 on the first day to fall one stroke behind Fromm. Day two was used as the tie breaker and Busho’s score of 74 beat Fromm’s day two score of 75 to earn Busho first place.

Upper Iowa’s Matt Dahlke earned medalist honors over the weekend at the Peacock Spring Classic firing an even-par 72 on day one and following up with a 73 for a weekend total of 145. Dahlke led all NSIC golfers at the event which included Concordia-St. Paul, Winona State, Bemidji State, and Minnesota, Crookston.

PhotoBecker, Minn. - Winona State Brady Strangstalien (So., Westby, Wis.) won his second medalist honors in as many years as he shot rounds 68 and 72 to finish with a four under 140 to help lead the Warriors to the their fifth straight, and 13th overall NSIC Men’s Golf Championship held at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, Minn. Strangstalien becomes the first NSIC golfer to win back-to-back medalist honors since Dick Jones (WSU) did in back in 1964 & 1965. Robert Newberry was named NSIC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. PhotoSt. Paul, Minn. - The NSIC Men’s Golf Championship is set for Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th in Becker, Minn. The men will play 18 holes per day (36 total) to determine the 2007 NSIC Champion.
The NSIC Women’s Championship consists of 36 holes in the fall and 36 holes in the spring (72 total). The fall 36 holes will be held with the men in Becker on Oct 6-7 while the spring rounds will be played April 12-13 in Yankton, S.D.

Junior Adam Winans, who has been playing well of late, earned medalist honors as he turned in a 137 (-3 / 69-68) for his 36 holes at the Express Suites Riverport Inn Classic. Winans led the field on both days and finished two strokes ahead of the runner-up. The two round total sets a new individual record for Upper Iowa. The previous two round low was 144; set by current junior Josh Wells.

Winona State’s Jeff Porter and Bemidji State’s Neil Rude share this week’s NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Week honors. Both Porter and Rude, who tied for second place, shot even par rounds of 144 at the Men’s Fall Central Regional Invitational at the Wildflower Golf Club in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Porter shot rounds of 70-74 to finish one stroke off the lead. Rude shot a low round of 69 on day one before following it up with a 75 on day two. Winona State won the invitational (582) by 14 strokes while Bemidji State came in third with a team score of 604.

Craig Nelson finished in a tie for second place at the NDSU Erv Kaiser Invite last weekend in Fargo, N.D. Competing against NCAA I athletes from North Dakota State and South Dakota State, Nelson finished three rounds of play with a final score of 227 (72 - 78 - 77). The Wolves placed sixth at the event.

Brad Shetler claimed the medalist honor at the Presentation College/Northern State University Invite on September 3 by posting a sub-par round. Shetler shot a 69 (35-34) on the par-72 course to lead the Marauders to a six-stroke team victory. His closest individual competitor was teammate Matt Bakkum, who carded an under-par 71 (36-35).

Other Men’s Golf Top Performers

Upper Iowa’s Josh Wells (Jr., River Falls, Wis.) shot a 75 in the one-day Husky Invite hosted by St. Cloud State. The junior shot 37-38 to finish in a tie for 9th. Wells carded a 4.20 (+2) average on par fours and a 4.50 (-2) on par fives while finishing the day with four birdies. On Sunday, Wells shot a 39-37 (76) in the first round of the Bemidji State Invitational.

Winona State’s Brady Strangstalien (So., Westby, Wis.) was the medalist in the 12-team Bemidji State University Invitational and tied for ninth in the four-team Husky Invite. At Bemidji, Strangstalien breezed through the field with a five-under-par 139, shooting a two-under-par 69 on the first day and wrapping up the 36-hole tournament with a two-under-par 70. In the Husky Invite, Strangstalien posted a three-over-par with a 75.
