Tim Huber Named Augustana Head Baseball Coach

July 17, 2008 | Full Release tag

PhotoSioux Falls, S.D. - Tim Huber has been named as the 19th head baseball coach at Augustana College, Augustana Director of Athletics Bill Gross announced today.

Huber replaces Dan Richards, who resigned after 2 seasons with the Vikings.

Huber is no stranger to Augustana or the Vikings’ new conference, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He played collegiately at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and coached at Southwest Minnesota State University.

“We are extremely excited about the outstanding background that Tim brings to the Augustana baseball program,” Gross said. “He played at a top-notch program at Minnesota State and was an assistant coach at another quality program at Southwest Minnesota State. He then moved on and had a very successful 4-year career at Dakota County Technical College. He’s very familiar with the NSIC and the region. I feel that blend of experience will lend itself well with our program.”

According to Huber, he’s eager to begin his new job.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the Augustana family,” Huber said. “I’m pretty familiar with a lot of the guys on the team. There is a lot of talent here. I don’t think this is a rebuilding process. We can have some success right away if we work at it. With outstanding facilities, a strong commitment to athletics and academics and being a part of this great community, Augustana is a great school for players to come and play baseball.”

Huber comes to Augustana after 4 successful years as the head coach at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn. In his 4 seasons, Huber posted a 98-71-1 record. The Blue Knights’ record improved each season under Huber’s guidance. After inheriting a team that went 5-30 the season before his arrival, Huber led the Blue Knights to a 19-20-1 record in 2005. He followed that by directing DCTC to a 23-17 record in 2006. The team finished fourth in the Minnesota Community College Conference and he was named the MCCC Southern Division Coach of the Year.

In 2007, Huber led DCTC to a 25-18 record before directing the Blue Knights to a 31-16 record in 2008. This season DCTC was ranked in the top 15 in the national rankings, finished third at the state tournament and advanced to the regional tournament. At regionals, the Blue Knights lost in the championship game, 1 win shy of advancing to the College World Series.

Prior to DCTC, Huber spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. Working with the hitters and outfielders, SMSU led the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in batting average, hits, doubles, total bases and runs batted in during the 2003 season. Those totals all ranked among the top 3 single-season totals in SMSU history. As a result, 5 Mustang hitters were named to the All-NSIC Team while 2 others received honorable mention recognition.

In addition to his college coaching experience, Huber has 3 years of experience as a head legion baseball coach in West St. Paul, Minn., and Marshall.

Huber, an outfielder, enjoyed a stellar playing career at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 1997-2001. He was a two-time All-North Central Conference selection (1999 and 2001) and was an All-Central Region First Team selection in 2001. The Mavericks won the NCC title in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Huber, a native of Belle Plaine, Minn., graduated from Minnesota State in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management. He earned a master’s degree in educational leadership with a physical education emphasis from Southwest Minnesota State in 2004.

Wayne State Rally Falls Short Against #5 Emporia State

Emporia, Kan. - Top seeded and 5th-ranked Emporia State eliminated 19th-ranked Wayne State College from the NCAA Division II Central Region Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon with a 13-8 win over the Wildcats in a game played at Glennen Field in Emporia, Kansas.  With the win, the Hornets improve to 50-8 on the season, including an astounding 33-1 at home, while Wayne State ends the year at 40-13.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second inning despite recording just two hits.  WSC starting pitcher Mitch Herrick, who entered the game allowing just 14 walks and three hit batters in 68 innings pitched, hit two batters and walked another and Emporia State took full advantage.  Hornet shortstop Andy Anderson, the number nine batter, laced a three-run double down the left field line followed by an RBI double to right field by Brian Majors for the only hits in the inning that resulted in five runs for the Hornets.

WSC scored in the bottom of the second inning as Joe Wendte lined a bases-loaded single to right field bringing home Treye Hacker, but Brian Sulzman was thrown out at home on the play preventing the Wildcats from scoring another run to keep the score 5-1.

Emporia State got on the board again in the third inning as catcher Keith Hernandez, the Central Region Player of the Year, belted a solo homer, his 18th of the season, to put the Hornets in front 6-1. The Hornets then chased Herrick in the fourth inning by scoring three runs on an RBI single by Conner Crumbliss to go with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-1. (Read More)

Upper Iowa Falls 5-2 to #3 Ouachita Baptist

February 8, 2007 | Box Score tag

Arkadelphia, Arkansas - The Upper Iowa baseball team left the snow and cold temperatures of Northeast Iowa for the warm weather of Arkadelphia, Arkansas for their season opener. The Peacocks took the field to face the #3 Tigers of Ouchita Baptist. The Tigers entered the game with a perfect 3-0 record after starting their season last week. UIU's starting pitcher Zach Raff kept the powerful Tiger lineup off balance through the first six innings and the boys from Iowa held a one-run lead after their half of the seventh inning. Unfortunately, a four-run rally by the home team in the bottom of the seventh secured the win for the ranked Tigers and gave the Peacocks their first loss of the young season.

Upper Iowa took the field for their first action outside since this fall, but the Peacocks looked steady through the first six innings of action using great defense behind Raff to hold a potent Tiger lineup to just one run over that time. The Tiger run came on a homerun in the second inning. Upper Iowa scratched out the tying run when Ryan Arp jarred the ball loose sliding into home on a Nick Fjelland fly ball to right field. T.J. Johnson gave Upper Iowa a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a homerun, but the Tigers came back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. (Read More)

“We are excited that Coach Gulseth will be part of our outstanding athletic tradition,” said Schloss. “The combination of his past teaching experience, his reputation in the baseball community and his experience working with young people across the state will be a huge asset to NSU.”

Schloss added that Gulseth’s role in admissions takes advantage of his longstanding relationship with high schools and his potential effectiveness in marketing Northern State to athletes and non-athletes alike. (Read More)
