ABOUT THE NSIC
Overview: Founded in 1932, the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) has enjoyed a varied existence in the upper Midwest region it calls home. In the spring of 1992 the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) was formed out of the merger of the NIC, the men’s conference, and the women’s Northern Sun Conference (NSC). The NSC had existed since 1979. The NSIC is currently made up of institutions from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota. In the 1999-00 academic year, the NSIC became an expanded 10-team league from a previous seven-member conference. The conference featured eight members from 2004-05 until 2005-06 but the league expanded back to 10 teams in 2006-07 as the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., and Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, joined the league. In 2008-09 the NSIC will explode into a 14-team league with the addition of Augustana College, Minnesota State University, Mankato, University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University.
NSIC Showcase TV Show: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference made history on October 19, 1999, as the first Northern Sun Showcase television show debuted on what was then Midwest Sports Channel. The broadcast marked the first time the NSIC promoted itself via television. With close to 55 broadcasts to its credit, the NSIC will once again produce the half-hour program which will be aired across the Upper Midwest on Fox Sports Net North. The magazine show includes features on student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni and NSIC championships and tournaments. Mike Woodley, a local and national television and radio sports broadcaster and Butch Raymond, NSIC commissioner, serve as the co-hosts. The Northern Sun Showcase will air five times during the academic season and the
NSIC Spotlight Radio Show: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference produces a weekly radio show in the NSIC Radio Spotlight. Mike Woodley and Butch Raymond co-host 20 shows that are produced from October to March. The show includes weekly recaps, player and coaches interviews as well highlights from that week’s games. The show is broadcast over a five state area by the NSIC Radio affiliates.
NSIC Website: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference website (www.northernsun.org) is you place for the most up-to-date information on the NSIC. The site includes game stories, weekly release, schedules, stats, links to member’s schools and corporate partner as well and links to the radio and tv shows and much, much more. The site receives over a 1,000,000 hits per month during the academic year which is more that 40,000 hits per day.
