UMD Falls to Metro State in OT of NCAA Central Soccer Regional

November 15, 2009 | Box Score | Full NCAA Bracket

PhotoDenver, Colo. - In heart-breaking fashion, the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad's NCAA II playoff run came to an end on Sunday, with UMD losing 2-1 in the first overtime, to Central Region host Metro State College, in the two teams' second round match at Auraria Field.

The Bulldogs put the wraps on a season for the ages, finishing with a 17-3-2 overall record; the loss snaps a 12-game unbeaten streak, for UMD, the team's longest of 2009.

In the 96th minute of play, Metro State forward Becca Mays delivered the game-winner, after gaining possession of the ball inside the Bulldogs' goalie box. The Roadrunner forward tapped the ball to the right side of the box, before gunning the ball back across the goal mouth, past the outstretched arms of UMD goalie Hannah Bengtson. The helper on the goal was credited to MSC's Jen Thomas.

Metro State scored the initial strike at the 84:54 mark, also potted by Mays. The Bulldogs responded less than a minute later when Maroon and Gold forward Lauren Graydon shook a defender and guided a shot from the left side, that found its way through Roadrunner netminder Becca Maloney's hands. The unassisted equalizer delivered at the 85:49 mark was Graydon's third goal on the year.

"Today we played a top-5 team, on their field, and were in a very good position," said UMD head coach Greg Cane after the game.

Bengtson made seven saves in all, while her net colleague Maloney made two stops. Metro State outshot UMD by a count of 17-6, and outpaced the visitors in corner kicks 11-6.

WINONA, MN -- The field of 48 teams that will make up the 2009 NCAA National Division II Soccer Tournament will be announced Monday night, but one thing is for sure – the University of Minnesota Duluth will be one of those teams.

The Bulldogs sealed their postseason fate Sunday afternoon in Winona, Minn. by knocking off No. 1 seed Winona State University 2-1 on the Warriors home field turf of Maxwell Field, to claim the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/U.S. Bank Tournament title.  The title locks in an automatic NCAA Tournament bid for UMD, which extends its magical season record to 16-2-2 overall.  The NCAA bid is also just the second visit the Bulldog program will make to the national tournament, a feat UMD last accomplished during the 2000 season.

"It's a great achievement for our team and our program,' said head coach Greg Cane after his NSIC-leading fifth postseason title.  "It has been a awhile since we have held a trophy, and that is a big deal for us.  We beat the first and third place teams to win the title, and I think we deserve it.  We are excited to represent UMD and the conference in the NCAA tournament."

The Bulldogs took at 1-0 lead off a corner-kick with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first-half. Junior Maria Leider rose to the occasion above a crowded goal line to head into the net her second goal of the season and second in as many games in the NSIC Tournament.  Leider’s goal came from a Whitney Wilson corner kick to the right of Winona goaltender Anna Belpedio, giving the junior her fourth assist this fall and sixth point of year.

Winona – the NSIC regular season champions – would not go away that easy, however, and the Warriors found the equalizer in the 59th minute off a Martha Curtiss corner-kick. Junior netminder Hannah Bengtson managed to make contact with the ball, but couldn’t alter its path before it hit WSU’s Kendal Straessle and fell into the goal to knot the game at 1-1.

UMD’s composure down the stretch – a characteristic of the current squad – gave the Bulldogs’ their game-winning scoring opportunity at the 78:20 mark.  Junior forward Becky Anderson maintained possession along the right touchline, and deep into the Warrior end, Anderson managed to turn her defender to hit the ball low and to the near post.  Senior forward Clare Dahmen was the recipient of a failed WSU’s clearance attempt, and Dahmen calmly buried the ball with her left foot into the lower left corner of the Warrior’s net for her eighth game-winning tally of the season.  For her tournament efforts, Dahmen was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 NSIC Tournament.  She was joined by three other Bulldogs -- Bengtson, Leider and sophomore defender Reegan Lloyd -- who were all named to the 2009 NSIC/ U.S. Bank Soccer All-Tournament Team.

NSIC Defensive Player of the Year Bengtson made 11 saves on the afternoon, while her counterpart Belpedio posted five.  The Warriors had six corner kicks to the Bulldogs three, and WSU outshot UMD 18-13 in the contest.

The Bulldogs, who with the win claimed their league-leading fifth NSIC Tournament championship (2003, 2001, 1998, 1997), will find out Monday evening (Nov. 9) who they will face in the NCAA Central Regional Tournament. The full championship selections will be announced at 6:00 p.m. via a webcast selection show on www.NCAA.com. The regional tournament will begin November 13 & 15 at regional campuses.

"This team has incredible heart and drive, and we trained for this game for 11 months with the determination to win", said senior co-captain Kelly Duchene.  "I am very proud to say I am a member of this team and I can't wait to see what other feats we will accomplish in the coming weeks, because we now believe anything is possible."

The full championship selections will be announced at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9 via a webcast selection show on www.NCAA.com. The regional tournament will begin November 13 & 15 at regional campuses.

BSU Gains First-Ever Win Over Winona State

October 4, 2009 | Box Scores From Today

PhotoWINONA, Minn. - Freshman Tiffany VanHaaften (Chaska, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal on Sunday to give the Bemidji State University soccer team its first-ever win against Winona State with 2-1 scoreline. The Beavers improve to 8-3-0 (4-2-0 NSIC) while the Warriors drop to 7-4-0 (4-1-0 NSIC). VanHaaften’s goal was her second game-winning goal this season.

“This has to be one of my most rewarding wins I’ve had here during my eight-year tenure at Bemidji State,” said head coach Jim Stone. “The team gave 110-percent today leaving everything on the field.”

Bemidji State struck first as Kara Smyth (Jr., Cary, Ill.) scored her first goal of the year after receiving the ball from Bri Scanlan (So., East Grand Forks, Minn.). The assist was Scanlan’s third of the season.

However, Winona State would strike back scoring the first first-half goal against the Beavers this season. The two sides would retire at half with a 1-1 scoreline.

“Winona State always makes things difficult, they’re very organized and hard to break down defensively,” said Stone. “But we were able to keep good defensive shape in the backfield which allowed our counter attack to be very effective today.”

VanHaaften scored her goal in the 52nd minute to give BSU the advantage and the eventual win. Ashlee Ellefsen (Jr., Hugo, Minn.) was credited with the assist.

The Beavers would then hold onto their lead outlasting a last-ditch effort by the Warriors to equalize. Winona State had four corner kicks in the last four minutes of the game, but the BSU backline would hold strong clearing out all the attempts.

Samantha Ross (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) was in net again for the Beavers. Her 10 saves made today proved key in shutting down the Winona attack.

Ellefsen’s assist now brings her points total to 68, four shy of taking over as BSU’s all-time scoring leader.

The Beavers will return to the pitch on Oct. 10 as they host St. Cloud State for parent’s weekend at 1 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field.
