SCSU's Miller Wins NSIC Heptathlon

NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
St. Cloud State’s Heather Miller set a new NSIC record in the women’s heptathlon to lead three NCAA national qualifiers in that event as the NSIC Multi-Events concluded on Tuesday afternoon at Northern State University’s Swisher Stadium. Miller, who also won the women’s indoor pentathlon back in February, set an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 4,818 points en route to her heptathlon win. That mark broke the previous NSIC record of 4,755 points, set just last spring by MSU Moorhead’s Ashley Roemer. Miller’s lead, which she had held from the outset on Monday, was never threatened during Tuesday’s action, as she won both the long jump and the 800 meters on Tuesday, while finishing ninth in the javelin to hold on for the overall victory. Miller’s score of 4818 was 618 points shy of the SCSU school record. The heptathlon marks Miller’s fourth individual NSIC title this year. She won the indoor pentathlon, 55 meters, and triple jump back in February. She set a school record in the indoor pentathlon. Miller initially came to St. Cloud State as a basketball player.
NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
The Minnesota State women were lead by the efforts of Brittney Henderson (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) who participated in the Drake Relay finals for the 100 meter dash and earned first place with a time of 11.72. That time was just 00.02 seconds off her provisional qualifying time, the fifth best in the nation this spring.

BSU's Prebel and SCSU's Miller Lead After Day 1 of the NSIC Multis
April 27, 2009 | Full Release
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Bemidji State’s Zac Prebel and St. Cloud State University’s Heather Miller lead the fields after Day 1 of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi-Events. Prebel, the conference record holder in the indoor heptathlon, moved into the lead after clocking a 52.15 seconds in the 400 meters to end the day, overtaking Concordia-St. Paul’s John Pimental in the process. Miller, who also won the indoor pentathlon back in February, staked an early lead after the 100-meter hurdles and never relinquished it.
Pimental sprinted out to the early lead, wining both the 100-meter dash and the long jump to open the day, but could not hold back the steady comeback effort from Prebel. The junior made up significant ground in the shot put with a 763-point toss of 14.57 meters (47-9.75) before capping his day with a third place finish in the 400 meters. His time, however, was nearly two seconds faster than Pimental’s allowing Prebel to take over the lead heading into Tuesday’s events.
Prebel now leads the field with 3,597 points, followed by Pimental with 3,548 and Northern State University freshman Austin Suther in third with 3,255.
Miller started her day with a win in the 100-meter hurdles before faltering slightly in the high jump. Managing just 678 points in that discipline, Miller allowed Minnesota Duluth's Traci Pottinger – who cleared 5-4.50 (1.64 meters) – to close to within 30 points.
However, with a third place finish in the shot put and an 825-point performance in the day-ending 200 meters, Miller was able to distance herself from Pottinger and the rest of the field for a 196-point lead through four events.
Miller heads a 14-person squad with 2,897 points, followed by Pottinger’s 2,701. Wayne State’s Jade Lippman and Paige Pollard stand third and fourth with marks of 2,699 and 2,648 points, respectively.
