NSU's Madden National Champion in Hammer Throw
May 27, 2010 | NCAA Website | Live Results

Charolette, N.C. - For the second time in three months, Madden captured individual champion honors at the NCAA Division II National Track and Field Championships, this time winning the hammer throw on Thursday.
In doing so, Madden became NSU’s first 2-time national champion, tacking Thursday’s title onto her championship run in the weight throw during the indoor national meet in March. The Herreid, S.D. native is now a five-time All-American and leaves an indelible mark on the NSU record book. Madden spent both the indoor and outdoor seasons breaking and re-breaking her own school records in both events.
The runner-up in the hammer throw last season, Madden won this year’s title easily, needing just her first throw of the competition to secure the title. She went on to improve that mark throughout the competition, however, unleashing her final winning mark of 58.70 meters (192 feet, 7 inches) on her second throw of finals.
Madden entered Thursday’s competition with the second-best mark of the competition, but simply out-performed the rest of the field to claim the title. Runner-up Liz Murphy of Grand Valley State finished a distant second with her mark of 55.38 meters (181 feet, 8 inches).
Madden’s performance set off a chain of All-American efforts for the Wolves. Junior Calvin McGruder – who finished seventh at the indoor championships in March – claimed eighth place in the long jump at the outdoor event. The 12th ranked competitor heading into the day, McGruder was the eighth qualifier following the preliminary round. The Riverview, Fla. native held onto that spot through the finals to claim his second career All-America certificate. McGruder’s final mark of 7.21 meters (23 feet, 8 inches) came on his first leap of the afternoon.
In other final action from Thursday Minnesota Duluth's Morgan Place placed seventh among 18 runners in the 10,000-meter finals earning All-American status for the sixth time ever (three times in indoors, once in outdoors and twice in cross country). She finished with a time of 37:17.69, a little over 31 seconds behind champion Tanya Zeferjahn of Queens University of Charlotte.
St. Cloud State senior Heather Miller (Sun Prairie, Wis.) had a fifth place finish in the long jump. Miller's best mark of 19-04.75 earned her All-American honors in the event. It is the third All-American honor of her outdoor career. In addition, Miller is in eighth place in the heptathlon after the first day of the competition. Miller has 3,146 points through four events and trails the leader, Aisha Adams of Angelo State who tallied 3,548 points on the first day. Miller ran the 100 meter hurdles in 14.121, went 5-01 in the high jump, threw the shot put 36-04.75, and ran the 200 meter dash in 24.66.
Four-time defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) decathlon champion and two-time All-America performer Zac Preble (Sr., Coleraine, Minn.) has the 2010 NCAA outdoor decathlon crown within reach after the first five events.
