WOMEN: Northern State 76, Bemidji State 53

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Krista Rabenberg scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds as Northern State (3-2) routed Bemidji State (2-4) 76-53 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Emily Becken led all scorers with 14 points while Jodi Reinschmidt added 11 as the Wolves rebound to go 1-1 on the weekend. Bemidji State dropped their second game in as many days.

Northern State used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to pull away from the Beavers and lead 33-20 at the half.

The Wolves out rebounded the Beavers 52 to 36 and held the BSU without a field goal the last 5:34 of the game.

Bemidji State was led by Katherine Jamnick (13) and Collen McKay (12). 

WOMEN: Southwest Minnesota State 74, Upper Iowa 61

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Southwest Minnesota State (6-2) got big performances out of Sara Leidall and Megan Stadler as they downed the Peacocks of Upper Iowa (3-2)  74-61 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Leidall scored a career high with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting while Stadler had 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting.  Laura Kramer had a game high 12 boards. The Mustangs pulled away in the final minutes of an otherwise close affair.

The Mustangs hit nine three pointers in the match and attempted only one free throw in the first 39 minutes of the game.

Leading the Peacocks were Britney Iredale (21) and Andrea Downs (14).

MEN: Northern State 73, Bemidji State 70

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Mitch Boeck hit a three pointer as time expired keeping Northern State (6-0) undefeated with a 73-70 win over winless Bemidji State (0-4).  The Wolves held the Beavers scoreless the final 4:49 of the second half to erase a 62-70 deficit.  Robert Thomas had a monster game as he dropped in 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting and 14 rebounds.  He also added two assists, one of which was to Boeck on the game winner. The win draws head coach Don Meyer to within three of 900.

The Beavers had four players in double figures but struggled at the free throw line as they hit only 17-of-26 attemtps (65%). Northern State took advantage of their opportunities as they hit 24-of-29 (83%) of their charity shots.  Bryce Tesdahl was the Beavers top all around performer as he had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The Beavers shot 42% (24-of-56) from the field but were 0-7 in the final 4:48 of the game.

MEN: Southwest Minnesota State 80, Upper Iowa 62

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Southwest Minnesota State (5-1) scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed as they defeated Upper Iowa (1-4) 80-62 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.   The Stangs were led by Kevin Andrews, who scored a game high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

The Mustangs controlled the boards as they held a 38 to 20 advantage in the category. They also shot 55% (30-of-55) from the field including 8-of-16 from long range.

The Peacocks had two players in double figures, Dan Bestul (13) and Nick Kramer (12). 

Andrew Peschong had an all around decent game as he scored 12, dished out six assists and grabbed three rebounds.

WOMEN: MSU Moorhead 79, #18 Augustana 66

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – #18 Augustana (4-1) raced out to a 14-3 lead five minutes into the contest, but from there it was all MSU Moorhead (6-0) as they upset the Vikings 79-66 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Angie Jetvig had a double double with ten points and ten boards to keep the Dragons perfect on the season.

The Dragons owned the boards in this contest as they out rebounded the Vikings 39 to 26. 

Katie Walden led the Dragons in scoring with 15 points while Krista Opheim added 12 points to go with seven assists.

Megan Doyle led the Vikings with 21 points while Whitney Hofer had 14 of her own.

WOMEN: Minnesota Duluth 58, Wayne State 50

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Minnesota Duluth (2-2) erased an eight point deficit with 15 minutes remaining and pulled away late to defeat Wayne State (2-4) 58-50 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  The Bulldogs win their second game in as many days to get back to .500 on the season.

Katie Jo Christensen led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting while Mara Hjelle had six points with nine boards for the Bulldogs.  

Jacquie Hartman led the Wildcats with 12 points while Jheri Booker scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Wildcats committed 29 turnovers in the game and shot 35% (18-of-52) from the field as they lose their second game in as many days.

MEN: Augustana 93, MSU Moorhead 64

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Augustana (4-1) jumped on MSU Moorhead (1-2) early and often as they built up a 23 point havetime lead on their way to a 93-64 win on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Augustana improves to 4-1 with their second win in as many days.

Augie was red hot as they hit 50% (34-of-68) of their shots including 22-of-27 (82%) from the free throw line. They also dominated the boards with a 49 to 26 edge, including 24 on the offensive end.

Eric Krogman (17), Cody Schilling (16) and Lee Stephens (10) were the Viking leading scorers. Schilling also had a game high 11 rebounds.

Justyn Burgess led the Dragons with 19 points.

MEN: Minnesota Duluth 66, Wayne State 58

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – (5-3) edged Wayne State (3-3) 66-58 on day two of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest to go .500 on the weekend. Wayne State also went 1-1 on the weekend.

Brian Sykora  led the Bulldogs with a game high 20 points and eight rebounds while John Vaudreuil added 14 points and five boards.

Brian Metz scored 18 points for the Wildcats on 9-of-11 shooting. David Walters scored 16 points after going a perfect 10-for-10 at the line. Jonathon Thomas added 11 points and seven rebounds.

 

DAY 1 Recaps

WOMEN: Minnesota Duluth 64, Northern State 60

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Minnesota Duluth’s Jheri Booker scored a game high 21 points as the Bulldogs (1-2) picked up their first win of the season as they held off Northern State 64-60 in the opening game of the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.

Bookers was 8-of-12 from the field with eight rebounds and four assists while Kelsey Hewitt added 18 points of her own on 8-of-11 shooting as Head Coach Annette Willes picks up her first win at UMD.

WOMEN: Upper Iowa 112, Bemidji State 108 OT

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Upper Iowa (3-1) held on for a 112-108 overtime win over Bemidji State (2-3) after leading by 21 with 14:32 to go in the game.  The Peacocks were led by Andrea Downs, who dumped in 41 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 20-of-21 from the charity stripe. 

The Beavers outscored the Peacocks 65-48 in the second half as Melissa Roberts hit a three with tie the game at 96 with 12 second s to play forcing the extra session. 

Bemidji State’s Heidi Matzke scored a team high 26 points while teammate Sydney Epema had 22.

MEN: Northern State 63, Minnesota Duluth 59

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Northern State improved to 5-0 as they defeated Minnesota Duluth (4-3) 65-59 behind a 26 point performance from Kevin Ratzsch at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  The win is the 896th of Don Meyer’s career.

Ratzsch was 10-of-20 from the field with four three pointers and eight rebounds while Rob Thomas nearly missed a double double with 18 points and nine rebounds.  Mitch Boeck also had 13 points for the Wolves.  

Minnesota Duluth was led by John Vaudreuil’s 18 points and nine rebounds. Brian Sykora added 14 points and eight boards.   

MEN: Upper Iowa 84, Bemidji State 68

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Matt Lesan scored 31 points as the Upper Iowa Peacocks (1-3) defeat Bemidji State(0-3) 84-68 at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Lesan hit 11-of-15 shots and 7-of-8 free throw to guide the Peacocks to their first win of the season.    

The game was never in doubt as the Peacocks opened up a twenty point halftime lead, 41-21.  Dylan Diedrich (16) and AJ Adkins (11) were the other Peacocks in double figures.  Bemidji State was led by Seth Haake’s 20 points.  Taylor Hall added 16 as well for the Beavers.

WOMEN: #18 Augustana 75, Southwest Minnesota State 58

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – #18 Augustana College (4-0) defeated Southwest Minnesota State (5-2) 75-58 at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Augie’s Amy Puthoff scored 19 points and grabbed a career high 12 rebound while Whitney Hofer led her team with 20 points. 

Augustana led by as many as 27 with 14 minutes left the game despite turning the ball over 28 times. The Vikings were able to hit 44.4% of their shots (24-of-54) and out rebounded the Mustangs 55 to 27. 

The Mustangs were led by Abby Kenealy with 16 points.  No Mustang had more than 3 rebounds in the contest.

WOMEN: MSU Moorhead 66, Wayne State 63

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) – Katie Walden stole the ball with less than thirty seconds to go with a one point lead as MSU Moorhead (5-0) nipped the Wildcats of Wayne State (2-3) 66-63 at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Trailing by one with under a minute to go Walden slapped a crossover dribble loose and recovered the ball as the Dragons erased an eight point deficit over the last 14 minutes of play. 

It was a happy 21st birthday for Alison Nash-Gerlach as she led the Dragons with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting.  Angie Jetvig added 16 points while Meghan Rettke had a game high 11 rebounds.

Wayne State was led by Mara Hjelle (13), Laquisha Cook (11) and Jodie Boss (10). 

The Dragons committed 19 turnovers but out rebounded the Wildcats 45-36.

MEN: Augustana 78 , Southwest Minnesota State 74

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) – Augustana College’s (3-1) Thomas Elliot hit a pair of three throws with two seconds staved off a late Southwest Minnesota State (4-1) rally as the Vikings picked up the 78-74 win at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.   The Vikings had four players in double figures led by Eric Krogman’s 16 points.  The Mustangs lost the game at the line as they hit only 9-of-22 (41%) charity shots compared to Augie’s 80% (12-of-15). 

The Mustangs led by as many as 11 with 3:40 left in the first half, but the Vikings rallied to go into the break down only four at 40-36.  From there the Vikings outscored the Mustangs 42-34 in the final stanza leading by as many of 13 with 11:08 left.  The Mustangs were not broken without a fight as they rallied from an eight point deficit with :45 seconds left to get to with two 76-74 with :02 seconds left.  But time ran out on the Mustangs perfect season as Thomas hit the free throws at the end to seal the Vikings third consecutive win.

MEN: Wayne State 66, MSU Moorhead 57

Sioux Falls, S.D. (Elmen Center) - Wayne State (3-2) pulled away in the final two minutes of a close game to defeat MSU Moorhead (1-1) 66-57 at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest.  Ryan Rudloff hit a three pointer with :29.4 seconds left to extend the Wildcats lead to seven and put the game away.

The Wildcats out rebounded the Dragons 34 to 22 but had ten more turnovers (22 vs. 12).

Jonathon Thomas led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting followed closely by Brent Jackman’s 16 points.   Brian Metz had a game high 11 rebounds.  Rudloff finished the game with seven points.

The Dragons were led by Justyn Burgess as he scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds.
