BEMIDJI STATE WINS SCHOOL'S FIRST-EVER
WOMEN'S GOLF TITLE
Jim Mergens, head coach at Bemidji State, led the Beavers
to the school's first-ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference Championship in Women's Golf last weekend at
Benson Golf Club in Benson, Minnesota. For his efforts,
Mergens was voted the 1999 NSIC Women's Golf Coach of the
Year. As a team, Bemidji State finished with a score of
696 (356-340) to dethrone four-time defending champion Winona
State (357-356=713). The Beavers began a varsity women's
golf program in 1996.
Bemidji State senior Tina Burlingame captured the Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Individual Golf Championship shooting
+21 (83-82=165). She outshot Winona State Warrior Ericka
Ochs (85-87=172) by seven strokes. Burlingame, a Bemidji
native, was named All-NSIC and NSIC Player of the Year following
her commanding performance. She earned the individual honors
at Benson Golf Club in Benson, Minnesota. The yardage and
par for the course is 5,809 and 72 for 18 holes.
